Consider this seriously. You turn on the news and see that there is indeed extraterrestrial beings standing there for all the world to see. Most likely there are crowds of people standing about 100 feet away surrounding them and possibly their ship. The newscaster is trying his/her hardest to bring coherent language to the camera but is repeating over and over: "Oh my god" "Human history has just changed forever" "Historical event" "Ladies and Gentlemen we are witnessing the dawn of a new era".
Law enforcement is trying its damned hardest to mantain some sense of authority, some semblance of clear-headedness. But you can see they are just as awestruck as the rest.
Almost every channel patches over to one of three or four major news networks. The scene is broadcasted all day.
What Would You Do?
I apologize if this general idea has already been posted.

the major reactions would be of three types, i think:
1. military. the US, russian and european militaries would probably be investigating extensively.
2. religious. i suspect that for many religious institutions, extra-terrestrial intelligent (and technologically advanced) life would be greeted as something decidedly less than human, while others would fall back on the human tendency to worship what it does not understand.
3. general chaos. it isn't often your understanding of reality gets changed so dramatically and i think there would be a stupidly-big uptick in wacky behavior as people try to cope and fail.

If extraterrestrial life was intelligent, presumable as intelligent as human life, I don't think aliens would come out all at once in an "INVASION." It wouldn't be in their best ineterest. We have weapons, they have weapons, we have fanatics, they might too, somebody's bound to get hurt, no? I think maybe one, two or a family of extraterrestrials would make their pressence known and make an appearance on every major news network and show hosted by everyone from Regis and Kelly, to Oprah, to Larry King, to Leno and/or Letterman. And when Jerry Springer has finished 'Dancing With The Stars' maybe there too.
The thing that scares me for the aliens are the the people who would have "issues" with them! When I think about today's society and how many anti-causes we have I fear for the aliens' safety. If the aliens are smart they'll stay on their planet. We're not psychologically prepared for them right now.
