A few weeks ago in Kingston, Ontario they charged a Father, Brother and step-mother with the murder of 3 young girls and the Mom, there were murdered because the young girls had adapted to living as Canadian teens, the family was from Afganistan and all signs point to another honor killing (where the honor in murdering your own children comes from I will never know), the big difference between Canada and the USA is the whole melting pot vs. mosiac theory and while I am all for celebrating your heritage, I believe like the USA that when you emigrate to another country you adapt to that culture and not the country adapt to yours. When we came from Ireland I did not go around blowing up schools, churchs etc, that crap was left in Ireland, so why do we tolerate this kind of crap, are we scared of being labbelled racist, un-caring or offending someone who sees this as an acceptable means of controlling thier family, it seems to me we bend over backwards to adapt to things that if a person born in Canada ever did we would be screaming for them to be hung from the nearest tree, is it just me or did somewhere along the line of being a open and welcoming country did we trade in our collective spines for political correctness

"honor killings" is an oxymoron.  As for adapting to an adopted country, I always think that if a person leaves their country that there must have been something there that drove them away.  Why not leave that behind rather than try to recreate that thing in a new place?

I agree, things often go to far in this country (Canada, that is).  We do bend too far sometimes.  Some police forces altered their dress code to allow the wearing of culturally different clothing although it actually impedes with the functionality and distinction of the uniform.  On the flip side my children are not allowed to call it a Christmas Tree, or wish other Merry Christmas while at school lest if offend another of a different culture, even though in our culture we DO celebrate Christmas.  Ridiculous.  Things have swung sometimes too far past what should be accepted.

I can't say I understand the whole honour killing part either.  I mean really ... if you're hard core into your own culture and your kids start to find their own path and adapt a different culture, don't you either have it out with your kids at the time and decide what freedoms they have rather than let it drift for a while then kill them???  That's seriously screwed up and also seems to indicate the family was really more frustrated in lack of control over what the kids did and therefore it wasn't actually about honour at all.  Lashing out because you have felt things slip away has no honour.    Parents and families constantly have to deal with certain family members not being deemed acceptable for various reasons, an honourable family will deal with it in a civilized, non violent way.

    Just my two cents.

This is horrible.  However you have made a slight error about people adapting to our ways when they emigrate to America.  Latinos from south of the border for the most part refuse to learn our language.  Our entire culture now recognizes two languages.  Instructions to everything are written in English and Spanish.  Our politicans don't even have the guts to name English as the offical language of the country.  Well it won't matter much in a few years.  Demographics and the high rate of Latino immigration will make them the most numerous of all in America.  When their leaders control Congress, you'll see the English language disappear over a couple of generations and what few non-hispanics there are had better learn Spanish if they want to communicate outside their immediate families.  Am I anti-hispanic, hardly,  I served with many in the Army many years ago, they are good people, its our leaders I fault for not requiring them to learn English.

One other thought.  As a result of the Mexican War of 1846-48, the US took from Mexico most of the western part of the country.  Many Mexicans to this day remain bitter about that and I feel that is one reason their government does not try and stop the illegal influx of Mexicans from Mexico into the US.  In the coming generations they will have taken the land back along with the rest of the country without firing a shot.  Now, do most Mexicans think about that when they come north looking for work, I doubt it, but I'll wager their leaders do.   Another note, I recently took a trip and stayed in a hotel where there were many Philipino workers.  They all spoke perfect English. Isn't that odd, they actually chose to learn the language of the country that was providing them with jobs.

I don't know what your concern is. They aren't getting away with anything. The three of them have been arrested and charged with some form of murder.

As far as my information goes from reading newspapers etc. that shortly after their death the sister of the first wife of the man, notified the police that fowl play was suspected. The police investigated, and shortly after arrested the parents and brother of the murdered girls and the man's first wife. (They were presenting the first wife as a cousin since he was legally married to two women in Afghanistan but that's illegal here in Canada.)

What more do you want the authorities to do?

Your outrage, if directed at the accused, is fine but seems unreasonable towards the police.

And just for the record, one of the things I love about the Canadian city that I live in, is that it is so multi-cultural. So guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

my outrage is simply this, i came here in the early eighties during the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland, i remember what my dad told us,

    1. the troubles stay in ireland, and both myself and my two brothers married outside our faith, something we never would have been able to do back home and for that i am thankful (24 years later and still happliy married with 2 great kids)

    2. Never forget where you came from, but always remember a counrty accepted you and you have a duty to repay that, I served with the Canadian Forces and as a police officer, both my brothers are active in community charity work, i am proud to be Irish, but prouder to have become A Canadian,

the fact that they were charged is irrevelvant, what the point was is that they brought their crap with them instead of leaving it where they came from, and sorry but as the chief of police from Ki8ngston said, the children had the right to live as Canadian children, not have to be killed because they did not meet the afgani lifestyle, if that kind of lifestyle was what the parents wanted then why come here in the first place. No where is my post directed at the police, they have to enforce what laws are on the books, but i will give you dollars to donuts they will plead out to 2nd degree murder and be out in 10 years
