By Friday afternoon, a frisson of unease had sparked into anxiety. I had been waiting eagerly for word from my jeweler concerning the estimate for repair to my wedding bands. I was told I would know something by Wednesday or Thursday, yet I had heard nothing. The unknown left me considering worst case scenarios. Because I had the claim slip tucked within my wallet, I decided to call from work.

I was told there wasn't an estimate on my piece yet, but once there was one, I would be contacted. I heard nothing until this morning.

It turns out that the first repairman (for lack of a better term) was going to charge no less than $400. It seems a policy was in place on prong repair. It was all the prongs, or none it all. I only needed the prongs on one diamond repaired, not five. So, the jeweler demanded the rings be shipped back, and they were sent out to someone who would do only the work requested for...$195!

I was so pleased, I exclaimed to the man on the phone, "I love you!"

He laughed, asking, "So would that be a 'yes'?"

It makes me happy that someone was honest and thoughtful to take the time to save me money. Assuming the work is done as promised, I will be a loyal customer. I'll be sure to let them know tomorrow when I collect my rings.

Honesty before a dollar...it renews my faith in humanity.

In these days of "grab what you can," yes, this is a great story!  Proves there's hope for us all out there....there are still honest people willing to go the extra mile to help someone.  It confounds me that the other place was going to "repair" things that didn't need repairing--what a stupid policy!  But it kind of serves as an example of one of the things that's wrong with this country's economy.  Can you imagine if there were only honest people?  And only honest and fair prices?

Hope you get your wedding bands back really soon so you can enjoy them.  And yea for you for caring enough to thank the jeweler and to reccomend his services.

(popped back to add that I just remembered the mattress salesman who whispered to us that we could get the same mattress and box springs at another place for much cheaper.  Which we did!)

Wombat: Wow--talk about customer service! I bet it was much easier to sleep on a mattress bought at a good price. I love getting a good deal. I suppose that is why I am drawn to the clearance rack. :)

I should be getting my rings back tomorrow. They'll call me to confirm. I was so relieved to find it was going to cost much less than I anticipated. It was a slow week at work, so I was kicking myself for what some might construe as a unnecessary expenditure. I don't feel so guilty now, and the repairs were long overdue. It'll be nice to have polished gold and sparkling diamonds again. I had lost a diamond the day before my anniversary four years ago. It seemed something of an ill omen at the time.

I hope work has been smoother for you. :)

That is really an inspiring thing to happen.  It really does give you hope when all thoughts of honest to goodness compassion and concern for another human's wishes and expenses seems to be slipping away.

Hegemone: It blows my mind, really. It isn't as if I have my jewelry repaired everyday. If they had ultimately requested $400, I would have grimaced, but paid the bill. It's the price of doing business, and the rings are special to me. But for someone to go above and beyond like that? Unbelievable.

Of course, my husband ruins the moment by saying, "How do you know they won't replace the diamonds with fake?"

People like him are the ones that get their business by " word of mouth " ...the best advertising ever.

RollingC: The jewelers are a national chain, Kay's. I didn't purchase the bands from there either. I have another ring or two--hell--maybe three, that need minor repairs. Although that is not necessarily a luxury I can afford now, tax time cometh. In my world, that's poor man's Christmas. So, assuming a positive outcome with the repairs, I will definitely be going back. Trust worthy people are hard to find.

An honest salesperson?  What's next?  An honest mechanic?  :D

It seems such a little thing, but it's the little things that restore our faith in humanity, is it not?  Just like how the little things can take it away.  Of course, by now, you already know that I'm kind of a stickler for the little things.  :)

I'm glad to see that you won't be ripped off, that the jeweler did the right thing.  It seems to me that's a rarity in this day in age.

Grape, I have an honest mechanic, too. Even better, yet, he's within walking distance of home. Scout's honor. :)

Queenie: I really lucked out on that score. I picked them up an hour or so ago. They look beautiful, like brand new. I had forgotten they had the capacity to sparkle so.

Ginger: I'm glad, too. Now, I'm going to twitch in fear of damaging them again. I'll just have to be very, very careful.
