i found an online quiz at OKcupid that purports to identify your political leanings* based upon your responses to a few pages of questions. while i dislike any such quiz that has no "don't care" response option, it did give me some interesting results.

but i was compelled to go looking for this due to the ensuing discussion in one of bloc's blog entries.

i came up social liberal (81%) and economic moderate (55%).

how did you do on the quiz?

also, does anybody else know of any other quizzes of this sort?

    My law was:

"I would dictate that there be skill-testing questions to determine your eligibility to vote, reproduce and use the internet."

I scored as a socialist, which is a bit odd... I usually fit pretty squarely in the bottom left quadrant on this test. Here's what they said:

    You are a
    Social Liberal
    (68% permissive)

    and an...
    Economic Liberal
    (20% permissive)

You are best described as a:

    Socialist

You exhibit a very well-developed sense of Right and Wrong and believe in economic fairness. loc: (68, -113)

i like that law, chimaera! :>

note that this is slanted towards US politics, which may be responsible for the unfamiliar results.

You scared me off from taking the quiz when you described it as being pages long. However, I tend to be more liberal than conservative on most issues - certainly on all social issues - and a little more conservative on fiscal policy. I remember what it was like to struggle to buy a home when mortgage rates were approaching 20% and the state of the national debt at the time had a good deal to do with that.

Funny thing is that I'm not a registered democrat, I'm green, and I have voted against dems more than for them in my life. To be honest, I think that's because I don't think they really live up to their billing. Maybe one day :)

I came up as Social Liberal (73% permissive) and Economic Liberal (18% permissive). I am, supposedly, best describe as a Socialist, according to that test.

The Political Compass offers a similar test, but, as I recall, it is a bit longer and the questions are different--I think.

According to SW's quiz, I am best described as a "Socialist".
Social Liberal(76%permissive) and Economic Liberal(16% permissive). Well, I guess it's fitting, considering my B.A in "Liberal" Arts. :)

Don't know how I feel about the social stigmatism that comes with being labeled a commie, but oh well.

According to Z's quiz, I am economically left by -7.25, socially libertarian by -5.13. I guess I can't escape the left.
  • lioneljay said on Sep 19, 2006....
A couple of comments on this quiz, which I just took:

    1) The "strongly agree" button was already clicked so if you lost your place while taking the quiz, it's possible that your answers would have been skewed.

    2) Based on the various results quoted here, the interpretations seem to be biased in favor of describing people as liberal.

My own results were 80% socially liberal and 10% economically liberal, and thus a socialist. Frankly, I find that characterization more than a little insulting.

    Apparently I'm a Centrist - 66% Social Liberal, 55% Economic Moderate.

Given that I voted for Bush twice, Giuliani twice, and Bloomberg, and would never consider voting for this current crop of Democrats (I'd vote Libertarian if I didn't like any of the Republicans) I'd say this survey is a little off.

Some of the questions were really stupid. Like the "treating France as an enemy" question. Obviously chosen to bait conservatives. But the question wasn't framed in a reasonable way! I don't regard France as an enemy, I look at them as our friend and ally, but that doesn't mean America should limit its actions based on French opinion. So how am I supposed to agree with such a stupid proposition? And that makes me centrist?

This survey was obviously created by wonks who don't understand the conservative viewpoint one bit.

My Law: Anyone who chants Death to America, burns the Flag, or propagates the notion that President Bush and the Jews conspired to make 9/11 happen should be summarily dropped naked onto a hornets nest.

    Centrist, indeed.
  • scalywag said on Sep 19, 2006....
Now I'm going to say what I was too tired to say last night. That survey labeled me as a democrat. I don't want to be lableled as a supporter of any political party. I have views that agree with democrats and I have views that agree with replublcans.

My party affiliation is officially "Undeclared". I vote for the person that appears to have views that agree with mine: I do not vote for the person because of party affiliation.

I have never checked "straight ticket" on a ballot.

I think the survey/test/whatever-you-call-it is subjective at best.
  • Alyss said on Sep 19, 2006....
Scalywag; I dislike the use of labels in that respect too.

And yes the test was very subjective and in my case the results of the first quiz at the very least don't mean a damn thing given I'm not American nor reside in the USA. But I was curious to see how my responses translated.

There have been serious polls done that show that most americans when asked about specific issues lean left even though they consider themselves republicans. Bush is neither conservative or liberal, he's a radical neocon. Giuliani is indistinguishable from many democrats and I don't know much about bloomberg. Could you dislike dems because of some cult of personality rather than stances on actual issues?
