as long as i can remember, i've always liked bananas. i remember playing hide and seek with my siblings and cousins, and i remember always hiding in my grandparents' store room.

why the store room?

inside it are rice grains, corn, and other fresh produce from our farm like dalandan, jackfruit, guavas, and bananas.

while hiding, i would be gobbling some bananas, sometimes finishing as many as ten.

yes, ten!!

i remember my cousins comparing me to a monkey - the proverbial banana-eating animal...

while i was reviewing for the bar exams, i was sustained by bananas. when i took the law exams in new south wales (sydney), i was again propelled by this wonder fruit.

my love for bananas sometimes worries me. but i always look in the mirror and thankfully see that i'm far from looking like a monkey.... ;-)

It's cherries for me. I love it and I love it! But I also love other fruits such as pears and kiwi.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 18, 2006....
my all-time two favorite fruit are persimmons and asian pears. for persimmons, i favor the hachiya to the more readily-available fuyu. there's something about the richness of the flavor and the sweetness...mm...

for asian pears: they have the flavor and juiciness of other pears but the consistency of an apple.

sadly, these fruits are not generally available in the US except during their respective season. they are not yet popular enough to warrant round-the-year cultivation, evidently.

silver, speaking of persimmons, have you tried the suruga variety? i'm told that it's the sweetest among permissons but i have no way to confirm it as i have not tried the others.

asian pears are such a refreshing treat. its juiciness always captivates me.
  • quidnunc said on Sep 18, 2006....
lab, sorry i inadvertently skipped your comment. i love cherries, too.

i remember driving to Canberra a few years back. mrs quid and i bought some cherries along the way, and boy, did we enjoy the ride, the scenery, and the cherries!
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 18, 2006....
i'm utterly unfamiliar w/ suruga persimmons...ah, i see it's a nonastringent variety. i prefer the astringent varieties: somehow, the anticipation of waiting for them to ripen properly is the most delicious of seasonings, i find.

  • quidnunc said on Sep 18, 2006....
i should try the hachiya or the fuyu. i just might get the chance to go to the U.S. next month (if the scheduled business trip will materialize)... i hope it is in season.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 18, 2006....
if you try a hachiya, i urge you to seek assistance in identifying when the fruit is fully ripened--otherwise, you will greatly regret your choice. :>

I love bananas best. (They are a wonderful cure all for a number of ailments, too.)

Pineapples and strawberries are also a passion. And peaches: 'millions of peaches--peaches for me!'

Speaking of persimmoms, my ladylady gave me part of one to try just last week, as well as two others to ripen. I found them very reminscent of an apricot, but not as strongly flavored, and juicier.

She told me if I walked about the property and really looked around, I could also find those, an avocado tree, and a grapefruit tree (which was the only one I was aware).
  • quidnunc said on Sep 18, 2006....
yes, bananas is a reach source of potassium. i heard that patients diagnosed with potassium-deficiency are required to eat a lot of this wonder fruit.

avocado...hmmm, i'm reminded of my favorite avocado ice cream!
  • rmuxagirl said on Sep 18, 2006....
I would have to say strawberries. Their so sweet and juicy and taste great with sugar...and i can easily feed my signficant other one ;) (although I don't have one atm *tear*).
  • secretlife said on Sep 18, 2006....
I love oranges! Navel oranges are my favorite.
  • LayaMaria said on Sep 18, 2006....
I can positively be a pig about mangoes. Ripe, juicy yellow mangoes. Fuji apples, the kind that's so juicy the juice spurts out when you bite into it. I can demolish more than a kilo of grapes in one sitting (usually at Christmas). Lanzones...(I don't think you can get lanzones in other countries!) I can easily demolish a kilo of lanzones in one sitting as well.

JL:I can be a hog about peaches, too (because they are so rare here!).

    There are such fact that:
"Eating banana a day keeps the doctor away"
Yes I said it straight...banana not apple.
I'll find it and share it with you...nah, where is it? I've just placed it somewhere....

    For me...I like grapes.
I can vanish a kilo of it in one sitting. Just like LayaMaria.
Though it gives me a li'l dizziness afterwards.
Yet, grapes will be my favorite.
    Specially the wine! Kanpai!!!

Don't worry, eating bananas prevents pimples...

For me all fruit in moderation is a treat, even tomatoes. I do not believe I have had persimmons though, but I lived next door to an orchard that grew asian pears (yum). I like berries, melons and plums also. How to choose a favorite?
  • JadeLondon said on Sep 18, 2006....
Quidnunc: Avocado ice cream. I know it is something we have discussed previously, but I guess it is one of those things that I'll just have to try. Although where that might be, I am not certain. Maybe I should go abroad. :)

Well, I suppose if I looked hard enough, there might be the slim chance of finding it where I live. There is quite a bit of cultural diversity.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 18, 2006....
I am crazy in this order for:
    cherry,
    blueberry
    strawberry
    watermelon
    cantaloupe
    bananas
grapes (red wine counts as fruit, right? LOL)
    pears
    peaches

I eat lots of fruit each day...

I don't like avocado and mango, while apple is a kind of serious fruit that i use in many way when i cook, the Golden ones are my favorites.
  • quidnunc said on Sep 18, 2006....

    or we can also say,

"a banana a day is seven bananas in a week" hahaha!
  • quidnunc said on Sep 18, 2006....
jade, Filipino ice cream makers produce the best avocado ice cream. you can check if it's available in your local asian store.

rmuxagirl, secretlife, layamaria, boyzmom, mr_right, and ginger, thank you for sharing your fruity passions...
  • RollingC said on Sep 18, 2006....
I've liked just about every fruit that I've tried...although there's lots that are still waiting for me to try them. I've heard that there's a fruit in Asia that is so smelly that it will make you gag but it's soooo good. It's supposed to taste as good as it smells bad... I believe I'd like to try that one day. As far as my favorite...I'd have to say banana. There's about 40 different commercial varieties of bananas. One is the Apple banana which is smaller than the Johnson(Chiquita) variety and extremely sweet and good...I practically grew up on that one. The other I know as the Hawaiian banana, which is like the Apple banana only better in that you can also cook it different ways.... fried bananas is a staple of the Caribbean food list...
  • quidnunc said on Sep 18, 2006....
RollingC, i guess you're referring to durian... it really smells bad but tastes so good! it grows in the southern part of the Philippines...
  • RollingC said on Sep 18, 2006....
I'd also like to try Jackfruit but haven't had the chance. Chirimoya is a delicious fruit but slim chance of getting it here in the States...I particularly like the Peruvian variety.
  • quidnunc said on Sep 18, 2006....
jackfruits are so yummy, too. i haven't tried chirimoya though. like you, there are still a lot of fruits i need to explore and actually taste...

One thing that I've been meaning to do but never did...buy what used to be called a fruit salad tree....it's a citrus tree that you can actually go to the nursery and make to order...
has to be a tree of same family....like citrus for instance..and
get them (they sometimes have them made already if the
demand is high enough) to graft Oranges, Grapefruit, Lemon, Tangerine on the same tree....not as easy as it sounds because you have to know which variety grows faster so the tree is balanced as it grows...then from the same tree you can have different (but of the same family) fruit....
of course you have to say order this year so maybe by next year or so he can have it ready for you...not as simple as it sounds but it has been done.
Different varieties of mango trees produce fruit at different times of the year....so you can get a mango tree grafted with the different varieties so it gives fruit all year...
The things they are doing with agriculture nowadays is really fascinating (I used to be a Citrus Inspector)
  • jhanok said on Sep 18, 2006....
    I like avocado.

But now i am always craving for papaya, maybe because it just a part of my pregnancy.but as far as i remembered i used to like papaya when i was still a kid.

I also fond of eating babanas this past few week, maybe because i need to eat fruits & bananas are the cheapest fruit in our canteen.lolz.& that my friend said that if you eat bananas during pregnancy it would have a greater posibility that your baby is a boy,but of course it is God who decides it first, according to her she read it from a magazine.
  • angstywin said on Sep 18, 2006....
i've always been a banana girl. the dinner table won't be complete without bananas on it. everytime my mother would go to the market, bananas are always part of the food basket she's brought home.

this goes without saying that we are a banana family. my titas, titos, cousins all eat the fruit, whether it be boiled, fried, sweetened or what have you. or just plain ripe banana.

nevertheless, i will never forgo our native mangga, lanzones (it's this fruit's season!), pinya, rambutan, duhat, pomelo/suha. and i salivate just thinking about them... yum!
  • Zayda said on Sep 18, 2006....
I love blueberries, pineapple, cherries, asian pears, and granny smith apples.

There is just something about the sweet tart pop of a blueberry. I think one of the reasons I like them is that I can eat them by the handful. And well, I like blueberries and pineapple together or blueberries and asian pears together
  • zelmarq said on Sep 18, 2006....

I love the taste and texture of a ripe pear. There's nothing quite like biting into one for a taste sensation, the juice escaping and dripping all over my fingers and down my chin.

Raspberries are particularly tasty too. The bright pink, plump fruits beckoning to be picked, slightly soft between the fingers and then the flavour exploding into my mouth.
  • quidnunc said on Sep 19, 2006....

Rarity...that reminds me of Mae West (actress) - "Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?" but a banana will do the part also...hahaha.

Quid- Those trees are available upon demand...you just have to find a nursery that knows how to graft trees that all.

A nursery owner in S.Fla. liked bananas so much, not only did he have about 20 different varieties but he wrote and published a banana book that explained the different types and how to care for them, cook them...etc.
