I recently read in the paper that eleven cousins had their stomachs removed in an attempt to outsmart the cancer that had claimed the lives of some of their parents, aunts, uncles and grandmother.

Growing up they watched as a rare form of heredity stomach cancer claimed their lives. determined to save their lives they turned to genetic testing. They learned that they had inherited their grandmothers flawed gene.

Their only option, risk the odds that they might not develop cancer, and with a 70% chance that they would:or have their stomachs removed.

The latter means facing  a life of eating very little, very often. All of the cousins chose the operation. Doctors say they are the largest family to have preventive surgery to protect themselves from heredity stomach cancer.

During the surgeries, doctors removed the entire stomach and surrounding lymph nodes and attached the bottom of the esophagus to the intestines to create a pouch. remember that if you don't have a stomach, patients lose a lot of weight, must eat smaller meals more often.

Insurance paid for part or all of the procedure  which cost between $65,000 to $85,000. Six of the surgeries were performed at Stanford, the stomachs looked normal before surgery, but a tissue study done after surgery revealed early tumor growth.

The form of stomach cancer that runs in this family is called heredity diffuse gastric cancer, a very rare form with only 100 families diagnosed worldwide.

All eleven family member are well.

I'm sure time will correct the flawed gene through several generations but it's a shame so many people will suffer while the human body makes the alterations. I've seen this type of thing happen through several close family friends, the latest being a family suffering from an gene which could affect each family member with "Hodgkin"s Lymphoma Disease" . It's weighed heavily on my heart as I watched each family member deteriorate from this horrible disease. Usually this disease doesn't  strike every family member and woman are less susceptible to the disease but in this case, the entire family was affected while the mother could do nothing more but supply love as her siblings left the stage of life one after another. In this case the father carried the gene and died early in life suffering from the disease but not before starting a family consisting of three children who have suffered through most of they're adult lives. Now each one of his children had faced the possibility to contract this horrible disease, and they all did.. The daughter chose to bring four more children into the world and now they too could face the same future.
As much as it hurts me to say it. I think I'd prefer not to take a chance on my own children contracting the disease so I would have chosen to live life without bringing any children into this world until a cure would be found. I know it's a cold thought, but there is usually a long history of the disease in families and the facts should be considered .
In this case with the stomach problems, I think I would have done the same thing. To me, it would have been worth the trade off.

Wow, that would certainly be a hard decision.  I mean, you can't take that lightly because living with the risk of cancer, or cancer itself is an extreme hardship ... and then removing your stomach, that's also another kind of hardship and I wonder if they're more prone to infection that way too.  Wow.  I'm sort of a little speechless beyond that.

I can honestly say that I'm glad it's not something I have to deal with.  I would imagine they're glad to be healthy and alive, but they have also paid a great price for that health.

What amazing resiliance that have shown.  I do hope that they all go on to live fulfilled and cancer free lives.  I certainly don't know what I would do if ever posed with that threat.

this reminded me of a girl when i was a preteen. she had been a friend, and for some reason had to have her stomach removed. i still remember the night my parents came into my bedroom and told me about it. i didn't really know what they were talking about, couldn't imagine what that really meant. they said the doctors put a tube in her stomach. i had visions of a bicycle inner tube, which seemed really wierd! i don't know what happened to that girl, i never saw her again, and nobody ever told me what became of her.

CM I think it is cruel to have children knowing the pain and suffering that they go through with a known hereditary disease. I think I would go as far as having a hysterectomy since pills sometimes fail.

Hege it is a terrible disease but cancer is definitely the greatest hardship.

Uni I am glad to that I don't have that burden to deal with, I don't handle pain well.

PC it is a terrible thing, I have cared for people with cancer and it is very sad to see the pain that they go through.

    Jade that is very true.

Trav what a terrible thing to happen when you are a teenager, I hope that she is well.

CW a really hard decision and one I would not want to face.
