Long break, folks.  Sorry.  I'm still breathing.  Let's learn something!

It's that time of year.  Pool's open and everyone's taking advantage.  Even some folks who shouldn't.
What I thought was the burn of chlorine may have been quite the opposite.

The burn lasted overnight and the pink of the eye spread to the skin outside of it.  Once I checked my hypothesis, I verified that the rosy glow about my left peeper was a classic case of conjunctivitis: pink-eye.

Such infections are not entirely uncommon after swimming in public pools.  Conjunctivitis is most commonly transmitted as a virus and such beasties can be washed out of the eyes of anyone who has contracted it and right into mine if I swim in the same pool as you.   If the chlorine isn't set at a high enough concentration, the viruses can find a new target before it can be killed by they chlorine.

Chlorine in water becomes hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion.  The former is a stronger disinfectant as it penetrates bacteria more efficiently.  More of it is in water at a lower pH, which is more acidic.  Oddly, your eyes may burn LESS at this more acidic pH.  Non-acidic water is "Basic".  Bases are the opposite of acids and they are used to make soap.  The burning in your eyes is sometimes akin to having soap in your eyes which any toddler will tell you is a crisis of life threatening proportions.

As the water gets more basic, your eyes may hurt and then may get irritated even more by the invasion of a little beastie that got washed away from a neighbor's cornea.

I try to end these essays with a little quip which segways into the next topic, or something profound about mortality, but I'm coming up dry.  Maybe that happens as you get older?

My function: auditory melodies. :)Thx for the warm welcome!!

at least your still in the run. Have u tried the jesus treatment?
  • dyingman said on Aug 08, 2009....
    You are most welcome, UnicornForm:

By "Jesus treatment" (I'm assuming the capital J) I guess you're asking if I'm "saved"?

    Probably not.
Christianity holds God and Jesus are one and you call on Jesus first as he is the way.
The Muslims claim he had no son and to show reverence to Jesus (or a saint for that matter) is folly (perhaps blasphemous.)
The Old Testament features a "jealous God" that demands we put no gods before him and if you call on Jesus first, are you putting Jesus first?

Jesus said those that believe in me shall not perish, but what does it mean to believe?

Do we believe in Martin Luther King?  Ghandi?  or for that matter Hitler or Osama Bin Laden?

In this context I cling to my belief in Jesus strongly even as my execution of his command to love thy neighbor and enemy is faulty.

If I require belief in the divinity of Jesus, this is where I'll need a heaping helping of mercy as the our God, Jahweh, may have proclaimed it anathema to do so and I believe what I do in order to best find truth and please him.  Belief that Jesus is God's literal son is not yet that truth, if it shall ever be.

...............You read into way to much hun. I didnt ask if you were saved but if yu tried the jesus treatment, the pray & love him treatment.
  • dyingman said on Aug 15, 2009....
Not for Jesus, by name, no.
His father, Jahweh, god of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and Jesus, yes.  (Technically, that of Mohammed too, but that's a whole 'nother conversation.)
As they're one and the same, I hope that's adequate.  I'm told it's not.

As I said above, I love Jahweh by following the 11th commandment as revealed by the sinless carpenter prophet of Nazzareth.  Is this "trying the treatment"?  Seems like it, but many Christians will tell me I'm taking snake oil, I suppose.

    Where is this 11th commandment?

Not gunna lie, all that sounds rather dark,
  • dyingman said on Aug 29, 2009....
It is rather dark.  Most religions wish darkness only on non-believers.  YOU are going to Hell, I'm going to be fine because my religious leader tells me so.

As someone not raised to perfect faith, I doubt my own infallibility when knowing the mind of God and assume I'm wrong.  Most people MUST be wrong.  I'm banking on mercy.  To some degree almost everyone had better get some slack.

The 11th commandment isn't dark at all.  It's just really hard.
Christians tell me that it goes like this:

"Love thy neighbor as thou love thyself."

A similar version which I find tougher still, but even more holy:
    "Love thy enemy."

    Sound advice.

it also sais in the bible do not judge, there is one that judges.

    so take heed.

And i love you like i love me even though YOU make these assumptions.

and on another note from your comment before, it also sais that god sent jesus and im sure it sais that he is god. when i find the exacts ill get back to you on that one.
  • dyingman said on Sep 02, 2009....
I may have made assumptions, but I always thought the judging part involved condemnation.  I don't think I did that.

Sure, get back with me on that.
I was under the impression the most Jesus claimed was being the son of God.  The rest, if I'm not mistaken is extrapolation by later Christian theologians including the trinity philosophy enforced on the rest of Christendom by the warrior Pope Emporer Constantine.

But I'll look forward to what you can find.
