This morning I read an article about some whack job shrink in GB trying to get Blizzard Entertainment to allow him and other "therapists" free access to their WOW game world so they can treat WOW Addiction at its source.

Or do they simply want to get their own daily fix without having to pay the small monthly (only pennies a day - heh heh) pay to play fee?   I understand that online gaming can be quite time consuming, perhaps after a fashion even somewhat addicting,  but to treat it as a psychiatric/medical issue seems a tad far reaching.  Oh, I might suppose that over use of the venue might lead to some compulsive related issues but to call it an addiction in the same context as drug abuse, smoking or alcohol abuse , I just don't know.

I have spent some time WOWing myself and I find it quite entertaining if not somewhat frustrating at times.   And time certainly can pass you by while absorbed in gaming.  I can imagine that there are those who spend altogether too much time playing when other things might be more constructive.  But an actual medical diagnoses of WOW Addiction?   Hmm.

Have the mind benders really run that low on things to do?

Yeah I would find that pretty far fetched too.  I wouldn't believe that you could call it such a specific addiction, but I could see that it might stem from something deeper.  I mean, for those people who can spend days on end without sleeping, eating, etc. on it and make a life out of this are those that may need help.  I think the mind benders just want a little more money and a little more freedom to play and call it work.

That is pretty overzealous! I don't get into WoW but am an avid Guild Wars player (or was when I didn't have three kids, and I still find time here and there!). Gaming is not, for the vast majority of people, a negative thing. Sure, there are people who take it too far, but then you'd have to treat "chocolate addiction" and "sports addiction" and all kinds of random things, because there will always be people who take things to excess.

    Well, addiction is addiction.

The shape that can take differ but the source is the same: a hole in your soul that you have to fill.
    No matter with what.

Naturally, it all depends by how big is the hole and how deep and painful is the insatisfaction. There are many degrees of addictions.

Being the online life so devouring i doesn't surprise me at all that shrinks are thinking in this way.
Online gaming can turn in addiction just like gambling in RL, or online porno or online shopping........ anything that make you change your life in order to do what you need to do to feel better through it.

Look at how many people here already called Soulcast an addiction.....lol...
