This morning I read an article about some whack job shrink in GB trying to get Blizzard Entertainment to allow him and other "therapists" free access to their WOW game world so they can treat WOW Addiction at its source.
Or do they simply want to get their own daily fix without having to pay the small monthly (only pennies a day - heh heh) pay to play fee? I understand that online gaming can be quite time consuming, perhaps after a fashion even somewhat addicting, but to treat it as a psychiatric/medical issue seems a tad far reaching. Oh, I might suppose that over use of the venue might lead to some compulsive related issues but to call it an addiction in the same context as drug abuse, smoking or alcohol abuse , I just don't know.
I have spent some time WOWing myself and I find it quite entertaining if not somewhat frustrating at times. And time certainly can pass you by while absorbed in gaming. I can imagine that there are those who spend altogether too much time playing when other things might be more constructive. But an actual medical diagnoses of WOW Addiction? Hmm.
Have the mind benders really run that low on things to do?
