my wife and i played golf this afternoon. she's a good player so our competition is always intense.

my first four holes was one of the better ones i have played in the past two weeks. i had three pars and one bogey going to the 5th hole..

proceeding to 5th hole, i stood at the blue tee of the yard par 3 with a distance of 149 yards. the green was beautifully perched on a hill so i thought of hitting with a plus 10 or 159 yardage in mind.

using a dunlop DDH ball (#5) and my trusty 6 iron (rac cog Taylor Made), i hit the ball nice and clean and saw it beautifully draw onto the green. "i'm on the green," i thought. "this is good. i have a decent chance for a birdie."

mrs. quid then played her shot and her ball landed on the left fringe of the green.

we then drove the cart up to the green (with our respective caddies behind us). when we got to the putting surface, i was baffled to see that there was no ball on the green. at first I thought that it rolled off the surface and was gobbled by the rough.

the construction workers of the house being built in an adjoining fairway lot excitedly called our attention and told us that the ball went into the hole.

what??!!

yippeeee! i made my first-ever hole-in-one!

accomplishing that with mrs made it more meaningful.

this experience has again reminded me that life is very much like golf.

in life, when you endeavor to do your best, some brilliant, if not exceptional, results can follow.

in golf, if you just give your best swing, you create the real possibility that, one day, your ball will trippingly roll into the bottom of the cup for that ever elusive hole-in-one.

it happened to me when i least expected it.

Congratulations mate! That was awesome. I do not play golf but I see (in televised PGA Tour events) how ecstatic players are whenever they shoot the ball on the first try.

By the way, did you win a cash prize or a car or something?

    Woo-hoo! I doubt I could do that. Although, I am a mean putt-putt player.

Congratulations on that accomplishment! :D That is amazing! It sure seems to be something really hard to do... Guess you're an awesome golf player.

It is definitely worth celebrating. Aces are very rare, even for professionals.

I used to golf, but I recently quit. I mean, I golfed for 17 years and I still can't make the ball go straight. Now my golfbag sits in the corner of my room and mocks me.

I jest. I still golf. I'm not good by any means, but I still enjoy it. The scenery, being outside on a beautifully manicured lawn, the cart girls, the exercise, I love it. I don't even care that I slice everything. One summer, I fixed it, then the next summer, I lost it again.

For me, there's something very Zen about golf. There are so many things you have to remember about your swing; keep your head down, weight on the ball of your heels, left arm straight, etc., etc., but the less you think about them, the better your shot becomes. Once in a while, I'll get it, and make that great contact with the ball. You see the ball soaring and you think to yourself, "I got all of that ball!". That one good solid shot makes the 99 other shots I sliced worth it.

lab, thank you. in regard to your query, no, i did not win any cash prize or a car. it wasn't a tournament when i made that eagle. but the club gave me a trophy and a certification. the personal fulfillment and the lifetime memory of having accomplished it is perhaps more than winning a car of any monetary equivalent (although these would have been a welcome added bonus...hahaha!).

silver, jade, justop, & grape: thank you!

i did enjoy the celebration that ensued.

justop, my skill as a golfer is still far from being awesome. i still try to practice and improve on it.

Grape, i totally agree. there are indeed a number of things you always need to remember when executing the golf swing. i was not so much of a "slicer" but my errant shots mostly produce a duck hook. this is what i need to fix.

    again, thank you all.

Congratulations! I've come close, thisclose, only twice and those felt great, so I imagine the real thing must be off the charts great.

I come from a family of golfers, in fact it's been said to marry into the family you better play or learn quickly. My golf to life philosphy is never leave your best swing at the practice area. It drives my father nuts that I don't practice so that's an extra bonus.

The weird and wonderful world of golf scoring makes for an interesting way to spend a bit of time...
Many new and novice golfers will complain about how frustrating the game of golf is. It is not so much that the game is difficult as it is the level of mastery of each player....
