I'm going to start off by stating what I believe based on the two testimonies we heard from the two reports.  Henry had probably did raise his voice at the arresting officer.  It takes an incredible amount of charachter to not get pissed off when you feel you are being handled poorly because of your race.  As a man who was handcuffed responding to an alarm at my bussiness (which raises an entirely different question of how the hell did I beat the cops by a full fifteen minutes from 45 minutes away?  I mean my alarm system is supposed to be more than a noise maker.) I know that frustration.  Clearly once Mr. Gates provided evidence that he was indeed the resident the situation should have stopped.

The police officer was wrong, ether he's a racist like everybody assumes or just a dick doesn't matter.  He can't win this situation particularly not with the number of high ranking African Americans around him.  His best bet here is to hang his head and say I'm sorry.  Just like when your mom dragged you out onto the porch you don't need to mean it.  Just get it over with and be done cus you're just digging that damned hole deeper.

While I agree the cop should apologize for his part of the incident, don't you feel as if Mr.Gates needs to grow a pair and apologize for antagonizing the cop?  I mean, you're willing to cut him slack for yelling at the cop, but not giving the cop any slack for responding to being yelled at.

I'd be thankful my neighbors gave a shit about me enough to report what looked like a break in and call the cops.  The cops are coming into the situation blind, so I don't think I'd go off on them for making sure that I belonged in the house.  Mr. Gates over reacted and because he's playing the race card no one is holding him responsible for that.

Fair is fair.  It has to go both ways.

What kind of neighbors does this man have? That white woman (and I state her ethnicity because CNN did...) can't tell the difference between her neighbor and a burglar?

Also, I don't think Mr. Gates should apologize. I think he had every right to be angry and cause a fuss.

Its part of police training to stay cool under situations like this. If it was an African American cop that did this, I still would think he's in the wrong. If an old man with a cane can cause you to get so frustrated that you arrest him on trumped up charges, than you shouldn't be a cop!

This happened to a friend of mine a few months ago. He was arrested for stopping a fight and getting one of the men to walk away. The police came and wanted to detain him. When he asked what was the reason he was being held up, the policewoman handcuffed him and charged him with being disorderly. He just came out of work and was wearing a suit and had a briefcase for goodness sakes.

Anyway, the point is that, black men always seem to be the first suspect in any given situation. Enough is enough. That cop needs to apologize for removing this man from his house and making him spend 4 hours in jail.

Disorderly conduct in a public place...if he hadn't told him to get out of his own home, it wouldn't have been in a public place!

tbs - there was an african american police officer at the scene.  If you want to build a case for discrimination you'll have to look further.  Why did this officer not say something to his colleage?

As for the "white woman" who made the call.  Would it have made a difference if she was african american or some other minority?  Don't you think it's possible that the sight of someone breaking in a door, irregardless of color, was what prompted her to call?

I think Mr. Gates should be fired and is a disgrace.  This man is suppose to be a role model in our society.  This cop taught a class on racial profiling and was only responding to a citizen report of a break in.  Who the hell freaks out over that?  One would think it's a good thing that people are looking out for your house.

Cops are held to a higher standard.  It goes with the territory, I'm willing to cede that Gates was probably shouting.  But unless he struck the officer (or threatened to do so) the exact moment he showed proof of residence the situation should have stopped.  Immediately.  Cop was wrong.

Sean - so you'd have no problem with a white man yelling and carrying on?  Sorry, there's blame to go around.  Cop needed to apologize and this intellectual genius needed to use some of those same brain cells to think through the consequences of his own actions.

Having been in the situation myself all it takes is responding to an alarm at your bussiness.  I had a gun pulled on me for playing Playstation.  If you follow my posts on any sort of regularity you know I have no great love for African Americans, but every so often I'm reminded that I am infact African American, not American.  The difference as it pointed out in this story is obvious.

Also no I wouldn't have a problem with a white man yelling and carrying on.  Once you prove it's your house unless you are physically threatening the office he needs to shut his goddamn mouth and get to fucking stepping.

Sean - I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Why I hate cops...
Police are corrupt thugs who protect the rich and serve themselves. Very bad people. Only thugs, criminals and bullies become cops!...
