I can't wait to watch this movie...:-)

It has so many appealing ingredients (punch line here...lol..) ...Julia Child, cooking, France, looking for a meaning in life, inspiration, love, Meryl Streep, food, France, food, pans, cooking, life with no aim, France, cooking......lol...

Mix all those ingredients together and i hope to be able to watch a good movie.

If not, i will just get fat when i will be back home because all those delectable, appealing, taste arousing, scrumptiously sexy, good recipes will make me hungry beyond control...
But its a risk i am willing to take....;-D

When i was a child, i never played with dolls.....but i had a miniature home with miniature rooms and all the miniature furniture....i mean really tiny....not an American size doll house...:-)

Of all the rooms of that tiny house, the one i used to be delighted to play with was the kitchen.
It had the tiny table, the tinier glasses and plates, the tiny sink and the tiny credenza.
The miniature pans and the miniature stove..
I would arrange the table, put the tiny vase with the flowers in the middle, cook some delicious meal..but no dolls would taste it...it was all in my imagination...once in a while i would allow my yellow plastic duck to partecipate at the feast, but she was oversized for that tiny kitchen.....lol..

Never played with any fancy Bake-n-easy oven either...
My daughter asked me one for Xmas years ago....and i gladly obeyed. We ate lots of disgusting, over sugary cookies, let me tell you .....lol..

I think food is one of the less appreciated portal to our souls.
Maybe because its so trivial, basic, routinely present in our life, most of the time reduced to a hassle and a bore.

But given a succulent meal, men will always be happy.
Even though for a brief moment.
But, alas, isn't happiness just a mere rosary of micro moments of serenity and appreciation?
What its a satisfied stomach, after all, if not primordial hymn to the joy of life?

Food has the power of shooting in our brain and heart molecules of sheer satisfaction..our tongues are the playground of heavenly and sensual mixtures.
Only sex can be compared to food.

I have read several time this wonderful book of Isabel Allende.."Afrodita".

She tells the story of her long time sought project of cooking only meals prepared with the most aphodisiac food. She describes the history of the aprodisiacs, the process of teh recipes and the results, when she and her friends gather around the table drinking good wine and talking about sex, philosophy, literature and all the shit that happens in life...

The book has a section with the recipes, naturally.
One of them is this one:

Eggplant a la sheik

Cut an onion and sautee with garlic in oil of olive. (mmm..already this is starting the fibrillations)
Add sugar, salt, pepper and clove.
Slowly cook for 3 minutes, covering the pan with a lid.
Cut the eggplant in little cubes, and so the tomatoes. Start the oven and lay the eggplant in a baking pan previously spread with butter.
Cover the eggplant with the onion-garlis mix, sprinkle parmesas cheese on top, layer the tomatoes and more finely chopped, and more cheese.
Some butter ringles here and there.
Cover with aluminium foil and put in the oven for 10 minutes.
Its served with a side of rice.
Red wine complements the eggplant.

Said so....Bon Appetit!.

You know food is the enemy for me right now...  :(

But I do understand the draw food has on people.  It is after all, one of the most basic necessities for human survival.  But it is also one of the most basic joys, or delights that people partake in on a day to day basis.  I do love watching people eat.  The way they enjoy what they eat.  Not exactly sexual, but close.  Just as visceral, you know?

I must confess, you've got me hungry now (but not for eggplants.  Never.  Yuck.  You can have mine).

soulgirl- I really like "happiness is a mere rosary of of micro moments of serenity and appreciation". I've often said that the closest we will ever get to a happy life is a satisfying life. Happiness cannot endure, it strikes us here and there, then flees. But enough strikes can make us satisfied.

I agree that food is one of the staples not only of health, but shots of happiness all through almost everyone's life. It's always there to give us something to look forward to, an enjoyable time of togetherness, even with ourselves if no one else is around.

Great post, pretty girl....and I do like eggplant.

Grapey....i know.....not the best moment for you to talk about food.....sorry...:-(

Well, watching people eating for me is more witnessing the natural end of the process...and if they are eating my food and enjoy it ...its a bonus...

But its not always good watching people eat.....geez...some of them have the strangest habits..or the grossest..

Heggie.....i know! And i dont have any eggplant at home, darn it!

    BeyBey.......you do? Nice....;-)

Eating together is the best experience....i have fond memories of some great dinners with my Italian friends when we started the habit of gathering on the Saturday night after work at my home (it was the largest one)..

We were a group of 15 people (some nights even more) and i loved cooking for them....
They would usually bring the wine, the bread, or some gelato.

I was particularly known for my antipasto (appetizers) ....i liked to display them in my pretty places surrounded by flowers and candles...

We would dig in the food and have the best time......i remember aching belly laughter lasting hours....and discussions over politics and arts and music...
We would move in the living room and put on some music and dance..

I am sure you would have perfectly mingled with us..:-)

I havent heard of that movie but now i want to see it, and i want to read that book!
I loved this post.. my freind was telling me how pomegrante is an aphrodisiac.

Unicorn.....thank you, and i am glad of having given you some suggestions...:-)
The movie will be out next month.

And...  yes, pomegranate is one of the most aphrodisiac fruit.... it was used in the ancient pagan celebrations for fertility and used in many recipes...

Its associated with reproduction and sex to the point that in the past its red, bloodish seeds were tossed against the spouses, like we do now with the rice.

Heard some people talking about this movie at work, but didn't know what it was all about till now.

That miniature doll house sounds fabulous!  I always wanted one, but the closest I ever got was using a cardboard box, cut outs from magazines and glue.  We used to make our own little "paper doll" houses with whatever we could find, but I would have loved the real stuff to play with!

What you said about food--all I can add is that you are right, because it's really odd, but I can remember certain "meals" that I have for one reason or another even years later.

  • gingersoul said on Jul 19, 2009....
Wombie.......yes, those miniature rooms were just great....my parents were buying me new pieces for Xmas or my b-day so i was adding rooms to rooms.
They were tiny but in real wood and with realistic details, pretty formal decpr, i remember.......

One year i even had a back yard with the pool....all so tiny...lol..

Yes, i know wjhat you mean...there are some emotions connected with food that are just unforgettable...

On the contrary, I could argue that the way we take delight in our sensory experience is all tied together in a very common human experience.  Not just satiating the hunger, but thoroughly enjoying the smell, taste, flavour of the items that we masticate is the real difference.

Like you enjoy others enjoying the food that you've made.  (I know it's all a little meta, but hang with me)

When we enjoy something that we truly love, or a new found taste from an exotic part of the world or something...  That's the kind of reaction that I was talking about.  The way we close our eyes sometimes, let out that involuntary moan licking our lips...  It's a delightful piece of the human existence common to both kings and paupers (though more often for the king, I guess)

This isn't anything new, actually.  I've always enjoyed watching people eat.  Some more than others obviously, but I've had this fascination since I was a little kid.

I do love watching you eat, too.  ;)

Bake-n-Easy oven huh?  LOL...could this be the easy bake oven?
    you crack me up!!!!
my middle daughter had TWO of them.  She cooked in that thing til it broke, and then asked santa to bring her a replacement!!!!

as italians i think we're raised to understand the power of food---that it brings people together, is part of traditions, families, friends, special times and every day life.  i still believe to this day that preparing and having familiy meals is the heart of my home.  And i do still believe that a great dinner can be the way to a man's heart.  You'd agree with me if you could have seen my husband's face while he was eating my baby back ribs last week!

hi ging, although i have delicate appetite right now, I'd want to try it. I can cook myself but I don't think I ever cook anything in that category. Well, I cook eggplant, and I like avocado, and i like spicy foods. are those count? :)

Being of German and English heritage (with several generations of American added on), ginger, I fail to enjoy many dishes and thus drive my wife crazy with my food preferences.  Give me a hamburger and fries anytime ... or anything with cinnamon and sugar in it - LOL.  Hope you enjoy the movie though.
