so a few things going on in my life the past few weeks and i just wanted to let you guys know since it's been a while...

movies:
transformers 2: there's been talk about racism. i think people who found it racist are working hard to find a problem where one doesn't really exist, to be honest. it's a big budget special effects flick and is fun. don't analyze the plot too carefully and you'll have fun.

public enemies: directorial indecision dooms to meh-ness a film that's got decent performances, great period details and some lovely scenes. if the director knew exactly what kind of story he was telling, this would probably be an excellent film.

harry potter & the half-blood prince: tremendous fun! recent films in the series have been a bit more liberal re: fidelity to the novels, but this one felt a lot more like the adaptation of book 1, sorcerer's stone, in that the missing portions felt considerably more like strategic omissions rather than departures per se.

good performances (esp draco, i felt) and some truly lovely little pieces here and there.

the mrs felt there was a little more "telling" than "showing" than she'd ideally have liked, but considering the length of the original work, i'm not holding this against kloves or yeats.

family: we were up at my parents' place last wee from thursday to saturday to help my mother care for my grandmother. for the past several weeks, my grandmother's been on the waiting list for a a nursing home, one where staff speaks her language, serves food that's familiar to her, etc. monday morning, i got a call: there's an opening, but this means that we would need to get her there the next day. the mrs and i dropped everything and were at my parents' place 3 hours later. we packed things, my parents and i dropped them off in the afternoon (the mrs stayed home to watch my grandmother; i went to learn the route for future visits). 24 hours after that, my mother, wife and i were on the way back from the nursing home.

i was very concerned about how my mother would feel afterwards. ever since march, when my grandmother's health really deteriorated, she's been the sole caregiver. but as it turns out, a number of people from my mother's (and grandmother's) church were already at that nursing home. so i think that seeing there were familiar faces made the transition a lot easier, for both of them.

let's just say it's been an emotionally-demanding week or so.

job search:
still in process, had to take a little break from it the past week but i'll be resuming as of today--in fact, am hurrying to finish this blog entry so i can get my day started and head off to a networking meeting.

so how are things with you guys?

the decision to put a parent/grandparent is never easy.  It sounds as if your grandmother was placed in a care facility that isn't completely strange or jarring, which I'm sure helps everyone.

Me? Not much going on here.  Work, eat, breathe, sleep.  Repeat.

Hi, ed.  It sounds like you have had a bit of stress to deal with.  I hope everything evens out for you and your family.  Good luck on that job search!

Wow, sounds like it's been busy for you.  You've definitely seen two movies that I wanted to, and I'm happy to hear that HP wasn't another frustration.  I've read all the books and yes, for the last couple of movies, the parts that were left out just ended up ticking me off as opposed to the first movie or two in which I could tell it was necessary.  Now I want to go see it even more!  Glad to hear your got your grandmother settled and that that's all going well.  Good luck with the job hunting.  Nothing new on my end, just the same stuff, different day kind of thing, lol.

Nice to see you Ed. Sorry about your grandmother's failing health but this facility sounds like a good place. Caring for someone at home is exhausting. Good luck on the job search.

I'm fine. Busy writing and dealing with both father's and husband's health problems.  I am enjoying summer weather in spite of those issues.

    Don't be a stranger.

u-i: hey there! yeah, tough decision and i know my mother wrestled with it for a while. hm...i see i have an e-mail i should respond to...let me get back to that...

CW: thanks, i'm working on it! yep, definitely busy: as i described it yesterday, the boredom fairy was apparently insistent on giving me the cold shoulder. :> glad you're staying busy, anything particular new?

hegemone: hi! yeah, the mrs got me into the HP books. z and i, and a few others, were going nuts before deathly hallows was released. i was ticked off at her for a while cuz she finished reading it before i did. :> thanks for the well wishes!

unicornform: hi there, thanks for subscribing! you're new to reading me: seeing & gabbing about movies is one of the things i do...when i'm not posting polls, that is. :> glad to hear things are going well with you.

ms bradford: hey there, sorry i wasn't online earlier when you were posting! it's good to see you again, i hope all's well with you and your family.

GS: ah, so that is the same actor as played cedric--i knew he looked familiar but i couldn't place him! :> thanks, i appreciate the sentiment re: my grandmother. truth be told, i don't think there's much in the way of improvement to be hoped for. and there's a lot of us folks who aren't employed just now, sadly. i know a few guys whose resumes are just amazing and they're looking b/c they worked in the wrong industry at the wrong time, you know? i'm looking forward to a fuller update some time later. :>

woman: hey there, i almost missed you--you snuck in after i started writing my response! yeah, the facility's a good place, thankfully, and i appreciate your well wishes. sorry to hear about the health problems of the men in your life. have you blogged about 'em recently?

Yes. A little whine was posted several times. Seems all I can write about right now. I am moving along with Dad's biography though. The fear of losing him before I'm done is splendid motivation. I am in the year 1984 and moving right along.

    hi silver.
glad you could drop by, considering...
here's hoping that your grandma finds her new home comfortable and cheerful.
and good luck with the job hunting!
me still moon fu-tzu do okay. considering. hm.  ... ;-)

woman: i'll try to pop by later, then!

moon: as always, a pleasure to see you. i just spoke with my mother (she and my father are on their way to be with my sister, who's undergoing surgery tomorrow) and my grandmother appears to be doing better today, is more alert, etc.

hm..."considering"...such a wealth of meanings and connotations implicit in just one word...

That had to be tough for all of you, making the decision about the nursing home for your grandmother.  But I hope she will fare well there with those familiar friends around, and that your mom will be able have enjoyable visits.

My mom is of that age, but refuses outside help at this point, even though she really needs it.  She says she will stay in her home until she can't, and then she will be willing to go.  As for now, she gets up at 4:00 a.m. and cleans house before she has her coffee, does a touch of yard work, and pays her own bills.  She's almost 89!

Haven't seen any of the movies you mentioned, but would like to see Public Enemies, maybe, from what you said.  I like great period details and lovely scenes, anyway!

Good luck on the job search.  I am still at my crappy one for now, but it gives me great stories to tell at the end of the day!

    Good to see you!

    Ed,
I have been immersed in my knitting looms as of late.  I've started my own store here where I will sell what I make.  I'm still doing a bit of writing including my diabetic blog.

BTW, I saw Public Enemies this afternoon.  I thought it was good, but I sort of expected it to be a little more lighthearted from the previews I had seen.

hi big bro! i miss you!! good thing you still blog here... well i hope the new harry potter movies are better now and more true to the book. the last three is kinda different... i mean only the first two movies are true to the book after that they dont follow the book anymore... i guess it's because tehy changed directors after that... well i hope you find a job big bro!!!! :-)
  • silverwhisper said on Jul 16, 2009....
wombat: that's tough about your mother. it seems like my grandmother's doing better based on the conversation i had yesterday with my mother, so that's good at least: the presence of familiar faces has helped her a lot in that regard. nice to see you too!

CW: ah right, i seem to recall your interest developing in knitting. i appear to have misplaced the link to your blog--can you re-post it, please? odd that your expectation was a more light-hearted experience: i guess we've seen different previews?

sis! i've missed you too! i hope i find one, too. :> yeah, the recent films have been different from the books, but in each case, i didn't mind so much. did you read the books, too?

    Ed,
Public Enemies was great.  I think I had the impression I did from documentaries I've seen about John Dillinger that said he had a wry sense of humor.  I expected to see more of that.

    My diabetic blog is here.
