Long story short in order to fund UHC Obama and crew are floating the idea of taxing sugary drinks, alcohol and cigarettes.

Personally I'm rather conflicted here.  I think a government, particularly one as large as ours is supposed to make money.  That is how it funds most importantly the military that protects us from invasion but also that invests in our infrastructure to keep our quality of life high.  Anything you can tax you should.  However there is a line to be drawn and for some of these products it has already been passed.

You cannot tax something to the point that you destroy the industry outright, you shouldn't even tax it to the point that you do true damage.  You also can't force it underground.  Taxing Alcohol beyond X point is no different from prohibition and we all know how well that turned out.  (or despite claims to the otherwise the EXACT same thing happened almost with the same timeline with the Drug War.  Just nobody cares cus you know it's just a bunch of spics and niggers killin each other.  It's not white men in nice suits this time)  If you force it underground we'll have yet another problem we don't want and can't afford.

I'm also not sure if this should even be labeled as a tax.  We truly need a separate word for taxes on products because many people would claim this single act makes Obama a liar.  He claimed that 95% of Americans would not see their taxes increase one penny.  However unless he's claiming that 95% of Americans don't drink soda, alcohol or smoke (I happen to know off the top of my head that roughly one in five adult Americans smoke and one in three Military men smoke.  It was part of an idea being floated to ban Tobacco in the military)  then the words get foggy.  Of course we should be fair, he was talking about income taxes.  A tax on Soda is a voluntary tax.

Anyway what do you think about taxing these things?

I never understood sin taxes that are suppose to be for some noble purpose.  The idea is suppose to be the higher the cost the less people partake but when you tax something to pay for something else what happens when people all out quit the sin?  Then how do you pay for that something else?

On the Presidents tax thing I copied this from a post I did:

Now we have Barack Obama in the oval office and as this story from Breitbart points out he pulled an HW:

"I can make a firm pledge," he said in Dover, N.H., on Sept. 12. "Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes."

Firm pledge, any form of tax, not any of your taxes...these are pretty straight forward.

SMB stole my answer. I suppose illogical stupidity makes anyone with a brain come to about the same conclusion. I drink diet drinks. How long will it take people to figure out that Diet Dr. Pepper is about as good as anything, or are they planning on taxing that too? They have already raise the taxes on cigarettes, right? I do not drink so I could care less about alcohol, but most of the Democrats do, I would suspect. So ha ha ha. Thanks for paying for my health care. Yeah right. Democrats. Gotta love the little morons. They are the ones that thought you could trust everyone to pay for a house even if they did not have good credit or any way of paying for it. They are lucky, though, that it came to a head during a Republican's watch. Damn lucky.

Hey I did the research for you and validated your point of view.  But he didn't increase Income, payroll or capital gains taxes (which are all virtually identical)  Diet Dr Pepper sucks balls.  I drink WATER 90% of the time.  When I don't it's either because I'm "forced" or I just have a tast for something but I drink probably two sodas a week and they are generally on the same day.

Also to be fair in general you guys should be supporting this.  These taxes are generally "poor taxes" as they dispropionatly consume said products and assuming we believe (which I don't at all) that the funds will go for UHC then they will /should benefit more than most others.

I drint diet Coke. And I doubt that much of anything will change that much. Whatever does change, the Republicans will just undo in a few years. Ever people who come here from other countries come here to take part in capitalism. If they wanted socialism, they would have stayed where they were. The American dream depends on capitalism and the dream is more important than health care, especially among the young. The young are the ones that are going to have to pay for all this crap.

Well... first things first. The actual bill can be read here. I see nothing all that amazing considering it was drawn up by a business consortium.

'Obama and crew' seem not to be in entirely in sync with the congress.

"Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel said Friday the plan would include three different surtax rates that would affect people making $350,000, $500,000 and $1 million a year, respectively. Rangel said the rates would be small, perhaps ranging between one and three percent, and would bring in about $540 billion.

"The big news on the health care front this weekend is that House Democrats are prepared to call for a tax increase on the highest-earning Americans in order to pay for expanded health insurance. Although accounts of the exact details differ slightly, it appears that the tax hike would take the form of a "surcharge" of 1 percent on incomes from $280,000 to $400,000, 1.5 percent on incomes of $400,000 to $800,000 and 3 percent on incomes of $800,000 and above. This means that someone making $500,000 would pay about an extra $2,700 in taxes each year, and someone making $1,000,000 would pay an extra $13,200. The burden, in other words, would fall disproportionately on those who earn not just in the six figures, but rather in the seven figures, for whom much more of their income would become subject to the 3 percent rate.

"In June, the Kaiser Health Tracking Poll asked Americans about seven different mechanisms to pay for health care. The one solution that Kaiser missed was that of a national sales tax, so for that I use data from Rasmussen Reports instead, who ran a May poll indicating that 40 percent of Americans would support a national sales tax if it paid for health insurance. Increasing taxes on incomes of $250,000+ was supported by 68 percent of Americans in the Kaiser poll, tying it with increased cigarette and booze taxes for the most popular option: [see table at link]

What Democrats seem to forget is that the people with all the money are the ones that have money to contribute to the next political elections. Borax dishonestly claims to have gotten most of his money from the little people, a dollar here and a dollar there, but we all know that is not true. We can only hope funds used to elect Democrats will dry up quickly as these goofballs (like Rangel) remind rich people what Democrats are all about. If city taxes went up like federal taxes do, people would move out of that town. People need to stop looking to the federal government to take care of their every need. Of course, they think they all that comes from rich people, rich people just find ways to shelter their money (or move it overseas). The few of us that a willing to work are the ones that foot the bill.
