It sometimes feels like i'm leading more than just a 'double life'... between my 9-5 job, being the Director of Photography for my friends film company, writing a script, renovating my house, and trying to spend some quality time with the wife, hasn't left me much time for other pursuits. For instance, I honestly can't remember the last time I watched television... Yet, somehow I'm still managing to squeeze some time in here. (thank goodness I can type fast, or i'd never get anything else done)

Haven't updated in a few days, and I don't really have time to do a thorough update right now either, but it's been an interesting couple weeks. Some of the highlights on the film front...

Saw a rough edit of our documentary

got a 16mm camera & film to start shooting scenery and 1st person shots for my friends movie.

I also had my first 'official' experience introducing myself as a movie maker and really being treated as such. Which was a lot of fun, I can't tell you how cool it is to be able to say that, and to be respected for it. I'll probably try and post something on it tomorrow.

My script is still in progress, and I've already got another idea for a second script, and some great ideas on how i can get it shot...

As well, I'm seriously considering doing a short film this winter, mostly just to get some more experience using the cameras (we already have 2 and a 3rd is on its way) that we will be filming with next summer.

    Which one?

My friend's film is a WWII flick, the script I'm working on is a crime drama, the short film I want to shoot is probably going to be about some ballroom dancers. I've got a rough idea on what I want, just a short 5-10 minutes. I can whip a script out for something that short in a day or two. Once I sit down and start that is.

Sometimes we are so busy we don't recognize that we are just distracting ourselves so that we can fill emptyness. Each of us at every point in our life despite our refusal to believe it, have the ability to manifest our own destiny. That is to say we create our own lifestyle. One of the important things to realize is that at any moment we can change variables and the direction of our life path will change as well. For witches this time of year is the time when we look at "what no longer serves us" towards the goal of personal evolution. Because sometimes we tend to pile on tasks instead of letting go or having someone else take the necessary responsibility, which leads to burnout. I had to learn the hard way that you can't indefinitely press on without accountability, without looking at the long term picture. It has helped me to narrow down the tasks so that I can actually complete them.

I too have a wife, kids, house that is a fixer upper, have written two screenplays, three books, numerous articles, volunteer for disadvantaged groups, and work a 60 hr per week professional job, while playing a professional sport during the right season. And I came to the point this year when I realized I wasn't accomplishing the right things because I was scattering my energies. FOCUS is the key to success in my humble opinion.

    peace,

JB: An interesting perspective, I definetly believe that we each create our own lifestyle, and that we can change the direction that we take in life.

My wife and I are nearing the end of the initial plan we set out to accomplish with our marriage (steady jobs/income, house, cars, dog, etc) We are setting up a 4 day weekend for ourselves to go out of town and work out where we want to be in the next ten years of our marriage.

I also believe that scattering your energies is about as effective as herding cats, its a lot of work and doesn't accomplish all that much. I do a lot, but i try to focus on one thing at a time, and complete each action as much as possible before going onto the next.

Just out of curiosity, what type of screen plays did you write? drama? action? romance? what happend with them?

I write a kind of sci-fi metaphysical hybrid. I entered them in contests like project greenlight and scriptapalooza, made some headway in terms of ranking. Got as far as submitting it to an actual producer/writer (she writes and produces EVE right now) but although she said the writing was very good, and she was really praising me for the intellectualism and uniqueness of my ideas , and story plot-lines she had difficulty categorizing who would produce it. So after all was said and done although she liked it she didn't know who could help me. So I'm now in the process of changing direction and writing them out as books, since the concepts in them might be better elucidated in that medium.

On a funnier note I made the mistake of showing it to a writer friend of mine who has spent his life writing screenplays and plays for the theater. His response was strange in that his usually very condenscending demeanor changed to all out rage initially. I was like why do you care so much if you think it is so bad. Turns out he didn't think it was bad afterall, (according to a mutual friend) but rather he was outraged that a part-time writer could come up with such a good story and that this wasn't my primary occupation. Now he has completely gone off the deep end and is obsessed with me, borderline stalker, and wants to marry me even though I have told him I'm a lesbian- total whack job. So I'm no longer going to show anybody my writing until I have completed the trilogy!
IPJ has read my work also.

    Peace,
    JB

So good luck to you in your indy film genre, it sounds like you are on the right track to success.

JB: Sci-fi /meta hybrid... sounds very cool, a combination of two of my favorite genre's.

What type of producer did you send it to? Studio? (I don't know what EVE is... going to have to look it up) If it's hard to classify, you might want to consider going indie with the production if you ever want to see in on film.

Donny Darko is a great example of that. I don't even know how to classify in terms of genre, but its a fantastic indie film and a quasi sci-fi head trip with a definite metaphysical bend.

Good luck with turning them into books either way, I hope it works out well for you. I'd love to read them, when they're done of course. ;)

As for your crazy writer fan... I find it rather amusing that poeple assume that just because a person either 'doesn't do it for a living' or that they are 'not in the field', that they are incapable of doing a good job at something.

I personally have many skills, many things that I'm good at. Just because I do them for fun or at least I don't get paid for them, doesn't mean I'm not good at them.

I think most poeple are more than 'just there _______'. You can fill in the blank with whatever you want, job, car, house, face, body type, religous beliefs, whatever you want, most people can't be defined by a specific object or state of being, generally only fictional charactors are that 2 dimensional. generally... there are exceptions unfortunatly.
