Went to a big wedding this weekend. The bride was stunning. The place was gorgeous. The food was yummy. The band even kicked ass. Then...the dreaded bouquet toss came.
The band called out for all single girls to hit the floor and vie for the glorious flowers...no one stepped up. The bride actually had to go through the crowd and scrounge up as many young women as she could. (Thankfully, she passed over me.) And then she had to toss it twice, because the first time it hit the ceiling and dropped, and none of the girls went after it. They all just stared at it like it was roadkill! Finally, a few married women joined in to make it less awkward (if you can believe it) and ultimately a girl with a serious boyfriend won it...making him a little uncomfortable. No garter toss, though.
Why is this tradition still alive? I know it can be fun and cute if taken in a good light-hearted spirit, but it can also make single girls feel desparate and depressed! Other than this horrible tradition, it was a lovely, elegant, NY wedding.
