What is prayer? The Wikipedia encyclopedia definition of prayer is:

Prayer is an active effort to communicate with a deity or spirit, including a monotheist God, Saints, gods within a pantheon, or others; either to offer praise, to make a request, confess sins, or simply to express one's thoughts and emotions. The words of the prayer may either be a set hymn or incantation, or a spontaneous utterance in the devotee's own words.

Praying has many different forms. Prayer may be done privately and individually, or it may be done corporately in the presence of fellow believers. Prayer can be incorporated into a daily "thought life", in which one is in constant communication with God. Praying throughout all that is happening during the day and seeking guidance as the day progresses.

Ultimately prayer is a relationship between the created and the creator. There can be many different answers to prayer, just as there are many ways to "hear" the answers. Some may be audible, others may interpret healing, or specific physicals signs as answers to their prayer. How the answer is given and in what time frame it is given can be as varied as the requests themselves.

My personal definition of prayer is a conscious effort of spiritual communication to a higher spiritual being who is God. In this way, I can express my thoughts, my intentions, my desires and feelings and make them known to God.

However, I also do realize that there are petitions being prayed for that may or may not be granted. My experience has taught me, that even when one’s petitions are not granted, it is not a reason to be discouraged from the act of fervent praying. I do believe that when one asks for something in prayer, one must have strong faith that it will be granted; as Jesus have said, “Be it done according to your faith”.

When you pray real hard for something you so desperately want and it is not granted, what do you do? Are you discouraged, or are you even more encouraged to continue praying until your petitions are granted? What are your chances of a successful prayer? Is it in most cases, more granted petitions than denied? Is it more effective if you ask someone else to pray for your needs?

Prayer is only effective when the one praying has faith in it. Prayer is an expression of self humility acknowledging one's finite limit and requesting the Infinite God for Divine Assistance. When you pray, believe that you may receive!

Good point Citiview. Prayer is indeed an expression of self-humility. Does this mean then that a proud person who refuses help doesn't believe in the power of prayers?
  • sadsack said on Sep 14, 2006....
I remember my Mom telling me as a kid that God answers all prayers, but sometimes the answer is 'No."

While praying, one has to also keep in mind the phrase 'Thy will be done".
    .
God's perspective is surely different from ours and what we want may not always be the best option.

However my most desperate, fervent prayers generally seem to receive 'yes' as an answer.

sadsack: that's really funny--sounds like your mom's a wise lady.

FD: i seem to recall hearing about a study a few years back in which patients in hospitals had large numbers of people praying for them and measured the recovery of those patients. the study also observed a like number of other patients who had no prayer. the former group was never aware of the prayer groups, which consisted of people who are strangers to them. the prayed-for group recovered more quickly. as i recall, there were some controls that allowed for extent of illness/injury, medical histories and that sort of thing.

things like that are what have me firmly sitting on the fence on the question of theism.

I wanted to answer the question about effectiveness of having someone else pray for our needs. I went to a bible study class that let us ask for prayers from the class and the praises came rolling in, I think it is very effective. We need to remember that God does not force his will on us and we do need to be humble to accept his gifts. So when we prayed for others, non-believers, we were sometimes disappointed, there is also the question of whether praying for our house to sell quickly or a deal to go through is really God's will. When we are close to God, we will ask for what he is willing to grant.

Another perspective on prayer is the coordinating effects of mind vs ego and spiritual connectivity.

The reason why prayers don't work is because they require complete mental dedication to the manifestation that you are looking for. ie. People don't have good mental focus when they pray, and thier mind has many different ideas leading to confusion of what exactly it is they want. This doesn't allow them the proper focus to get what they want. Also there is the old adage, "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it."

Witches like myself usually use the word prayer synonomous with spell; it means that we direct our mental energies to engage our will, our ego, as an energetic force to connect at a spiritual level with the Cosmological Matrix. We then make a request (a prayer that asks for something); however, due to the spiderweb nature of destiny, and cause and effect we may not get what we want when we want, or it may take a different form that we don't perceive as the answer to our prayers. This may be confusing so let me give an example.

Time component: "I want a car Great Spirit", 3 years later I might win a car in a raffle, my prayer has been answered, however, not in an immediate time-frame. Therefore, we must remember as physical, albeit very unaware beings that time is a concept that the Great Spirit utilizes from a different frame of reference. To the Great Spirit who has spent hundreds of billions, and infinity of time, three years is a mere blink of an eye, so don't feel slighted if you don't get what you want immediately.

Faith component: Requests made of the Great Spirit are tempered by the pursuit of your lessons on the Earth, you will get everything you need to solve your karmic lessons, and therefore shouldn't live in expectation, rather in acceptance for what you have. ie. "I want to be rich." Well maybe this isn't the lesson plan you need for this lifetime, maybe you need to learn humility instead and carnate as a poor person. Great Spirit has the wisdom to see what your soul needs, and you shouldn't second guess this. You should live in acceptance and humility for the wisdom of the Great Spirit, and pray for enlightenment, healing and other positive virtuous aspects of life, not materialistic indulgences to satisfy your physical need for creature comforts.

Many times I see young witches wish for things like lots of money, and do spells to this effect. Materialism is not a facet of any religion, even Jesus went into a church and overturned the money changers tables. They are then surprised when negative ramifications are enacted like their parents dying in a car crash leaving them inheritance. Well, you got lots of money but your spell just killed two people, therefore you are now operating from the dark energies. It is important to distinguish therefore, from prayer to satisfy one's childlike egotistical desires, and what's good for the soul.

For as many questions as I have concerning my faith, God must be listening to me, at least sometimes. I have always had the strangest luck worming my way of bad situations. I just don't think it is all me.

Or if He isn't listening to me--He must be listening to you. Although my hubby and I aren't completely out of the financial hole, we have been blessed with a wee bit of good fortune.

So, anyway--thanks for the prayers, FD.

I teach a catechism class to middle school kids at my church.

I have one lesson that I do when we talk about prayer:
    God isn't Santa Claus.

I start by asking the kids (ages 12-14) to write their own prayers. They do this anonymously. I collect them, shuffle them, and hand them back out. Each child reads aloud their 'prayer'.

For the most part, kids tend to ask for 'things'. I don't think this is specific to children. Believe me, I've gained insights into myself by teaching this class too.

I try to introduce different ideas about prayer-
praying for 'help', praying to say 'thank you', praying to 'just talk' to God as a way to establish a relationship...

When I pray, I usually ask for God's help - strength, wisdom, undertanding. I don't feed disappointed that my prayers are not being heard or answered because I'm quite sure God is listening and guiding me, even if I can't quite undertand how.

To me, prayer is seeking the Giver more than the "gift". When we bring a petition before God, it's most natural to expect an answer. If God is God, then He is in control. If He answers to everything we ask for, then He is not God but an ATM/ vending machine. He knows what's best for us although it is really hard to accept "no" for an answer.

When God doesn't answer my prayer, I would want to seek Him more to know if I have asked amiss and to learn to wait on Him.
  • sunsethue said on Sep 14, 2006....
I am new here but i feel that i want to comment to your post. Hope you don't mind even if you don't know me. Let me introduce myself.

Call me sunsethue. I was a tv writer (drama department) in a big broadcasting company here in the Philippines until last year when I had to go on indefinite leave of absence because I was diagnosed with narsopharyngeal carcinoma with intracranial extensions (malignant cancer of the nasopharynx). i went through a combination of 39 sessions of radiotherapy (linear accelerator which destroyed my salivary gland, dried up my throat and damaged my taste buds) and 6 cycles of chemotherapy (3 weeks interval) which I finished last Dec. 10, 2005. From 130 lbs my weight dropped to 82 lbs. As of now I regained some weight and presently weighs 92 lbs.

Last July (6 months after my therapy) another tumor came out on the left side of my neck. The biopsy indicated that it is another malignant tumor. It was taken out but my oncologist told me that the cancer cells already metastasized. I have a choice if I want to go through a second level therapy (combination chemo and radiotherapy again) or go palliative... no cure... it is just to extend my life. I chose palliative because I want to live the remaining part of my life awake and not groggy like before.

What do you do when you find out you are going to die soon? The decision was hard but I am at peace and living each moment of my life as they come. I open each day with a prayer for God to guide me along the way because after I was diagnosed with cancer I was ready to die. But God gave me another lease on life and I didn't know what to do with it. I was literally like a newborn child. Growing hair, no teeth (since they had to remove all my teeth during the 3 biopsy they did on me), got used to liquid diet so I was relearning how to eat without saliva, dysfunctional taste buds and super sore throat. Then after 6 months I was told that I am going to die again. What now? I really don't know so I just flow... think about how I should live the rest of my life.

Other people who don't know me see me just a thin, teethless (can't wear my dentures - no saliva), smiling woman... they don't know I have cancer and I am dying. My husband had to work in another country to sustain my medications and operations. My daughter can't bear seeing me dying ran away from home - I don't even know where she is now. My son is still with me, just 16 but coping the best way he could. Those who know me always ask "How come you're not bitchy or depressed after what happened to you?" I admit I am sad at times but I am at peace and I don't worry because I start each day with a prayer, make the best of what I have, do whatever I can with my time, love everyone around me, forgive those who hurt me and leave the rest to God.

I know there must be a reason why I am still alive. And I have decided to live this life to the fullest... make use of all my talents by telling people stories that reflect what I have experienced in life, and maybe... maybe these stories can enlighten other people who are lost.

I subscribed to this site to post the stories that I write... share with those who will be able to find my blogs the lessons I learned in life through the stories of other people I crossed paths with that reflected or mirrored in my life.

Yes, friend, God is alive in my life and prayer is my way of conversing with him. I talk to him like I talk to anybody else... that is my way of praying. But it works for me. Prayer strengthens our hope and it is the way towards faith.

Not all my prayers are requests... some are just thanksgiving or babbling... some are for other people... but when I request for something in prayer and it doesn't come as I expect it I still am thankful because I know that the answer given to me is better than what I really wanted. Sometimes our hopes fail. I might not understand it for the moment but eventually I will... as it always happens.

To close this comment I would like to share this statement that I chant over and over in my head when things are not as I expect them to be...

"Faith is something we hold on to when all our hopes fail."

... keep the faith... God is with us if we let Him in!

I have found that my prayers in many major things in my life have indeed been answered, but that lately, I haven't been getting one.

I think Jayne Bond is on to something when she writes about focus. Right now my prayer is to be able to serve God AND support myself. And while I have a clear idea about one, I don't have a clear idea about the other.

I've also noticed that when my prayer is answered, the consequences of that answer are different than what I expected: Last year I prayed hard for a job and was offered one at the highest salary I ever earned. But that job took me away from my church and my fiancee and I found I wasn't all that happy about it. Then I prayed for the summer off and was laid off this summer, just after my honeymoon. I prayed to simply serve God and now I have a part time position at my church. Now I need something to fill in the other hours so I can actually pay rent. Sometime the puzzle pieces don't quite fit together, y'know?

With a track record like this, I think right now I'm a little shy about asking God for things! How does the old saying go - "Be careful of what you ask for, you just might get it."

I agree with JayneBond in that if your mind is cluttered, it is more difficult to properly attain a spiritually open state, which can lead to blocked praying of sorts - you don't really feel connected; how can you expect results from that?

I have found that meditation before prayer helps me reach the attitude and openness I feel I need before I can truly talk to God.

Does God answer prayer? Yes, whether my own for my life or someone else's for me. Is the answer always what I want? Nope. I think the hardest answer to live with, especially when I'm hurting right then, is "Wait."

I could outline a particularly powerful prayer experience here, but I think I'll go make it a blog instead.

Welcome sunsethue and thank you for sharing with us your inspiring story of courage and hope. For one it has made me realized all the more, not to be discouraged when the answers to some of my prayers are not as I expected nor granted.

The power of collective prayer is so effective, as I've recently witnessed it again even here at Soulcast. During the time when our fellow Soulcaster HBC was critically ill, I prayed repeatedly and faithfully for his recovery that I even offered second Friday and Sunday Masses with special and repeated prayers for the general intentions of all Soulcasters in need.

As I was attending one of my second Sunday Masses, I suddenly felt an electromagnetic energy in the form of an internal ground which I felt was generated from my head all the way to my foot.

As this was happening, in my mind flashed a person in the hospital bed undergoing the same kind of positive energy healing. While this was ongoing, a inner voice was whispering to me, that the intentions of all Soulcasters in need are being granted by God.

Without a doubt, I thanked God for immediately letting me know of the signs to my answered prayer. Hours after that Sunday Mass, I had gladly read in one of Jade's post that she was able to find a new job, (she was one of those included in the special prayers; being asked for financial blessings).

And in a few days thereafter, I had already anticipated what Ed had announced in his post that HBC was checking out of the hospital.

This experience has taught me not to underestimate the power of collectively praying for someone else since God does listen to our prayers but His answer comes in different ways than we expected and in different times.

The essence of a successful prayer consists with the prayor's fervent hope that there is a better solution to the predicament we are facing, the great faith that what we pray for, can and will be granted; and with deep loving assurance that a loving and merciful God does listen and grants our petitions in the best way He deems possible.

Quid, you're so right when you said that sometimes, in prayer we should also be listening instead of just mumbling to hear what God is trying to tell us regarding our petitions.

Sunsethue: From hereon, you shall be included in my Mass offering and prayers that is offered for all the general intentions of all Soulcasters in need.

God bless everyone who shared their insights on this post, thank you everyone. :D

Quid, thank you also for honoring me with a post. I just came from a healing Mass from the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart here at Makati.

After the Mass, people who had healing requests lined up at the center where a healer priest laid his hands on the subject's head and was praying together with six other individuals who were aligned to the left and the right of the subject.

As I was next to be prayed for, I felt a warmness within me and I as approached the priest, he laid his hand on me and prayed that God grant my healing requests and as I prayed with my eyes closed, tears began to stream down my cheeks.

I had with me the healing wishes of every one who needed healing mentioning sunsethue and your Mom for a successful surgery. I left after the healing session with a light hearted feeling, which I sensed to be a sign of an answered prayer.

I shall continue praying and attending special Sunday Masses for everyone's intention here at Soulcast, God bless!

SW: Thank you for your observations, BTW how is your father in law, was his surgery successful?

A prayer is not just saying it.

Most of the people specially catholics have been praying or rather I might say, uttering the words they have memorized.

A prayer is not just a prayer.
You have to speak and think every word that it says.
As for me, I do prefer saying a prayer of my own.

Prayer is a communication to God.
A powerful connection between man and the creator.
No technology can be like that huh!
Even microwave communication isn't enough to match that.

    Belief, Faith and Trust.
That's all I can say about prayer.
Meditate as like talking to someone near me.
    Feel the peace and solemnity.

    I do believe in prayers.
If we wishes or hoping for something and God wasn't able to fulfill it (you think), wait for it.
God knows what's the best for us.
He knows the right time, or maybe it's not the right thing for us.

    Continue believing it.
If the power of the mind can bend forks and spoons.
Then why doubt on the effectiveness of prayers.
It depends on us on how we say and believe in our prayers.

I heard on the radio yesterday that since God is omnipotent he cannot not know all things at all times but he can choose to bring to action things that were stagnant. It may be in response to prayer or just God's choice, I wonder if that means we are still selfish enough to pray for the wrong things at the wrong times and not acknowledge God's will is what makes things happen.
  • mymave2006 said on Sep 16, 2006....
God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. That is to say in simple tongue in relation to prayer, he knows even the things that you haven't yet uttered, and when he see that it is for your own spiritual advantage, he will give it to you even asking heaven to come down to your home, for in him nothing at all is impossible, he is just absolutely present everywhere to respond to your needs, he is just beside you wherever you go and whatever you do. God is not just relatively true with his attributes but it is absolutely infallible. He is also full of love, justice, and mercy to cater your needs, BUT this love does not lead you to self braging and aggravation but to humility, this justice makes sure that your unrightfulness before him must be given due punishment for you to learn more of life's basic, his mercy makes sure that even you commit mistake, he is still there to sustain you life even with some specks. All prayers are answered, but sometimes it doesn't aggree with our desire and what we like. So he answer YES if it makes you good on your whole being, NO if it makes your life more messy, WAIT if he sees that it works for you not this time but for other time. All of these are God's answer, remember as mother knows best for her child, GOD knows everything what is best for us. And he has a basis because of he is all knowing, all powerful, and present everywhere.

Ninibud Sadsack Boyzmom: Thy Will be done takes a whole new dimension in focusing one's petitions to align with the will of God. It may difficult sometimes since we're unable to see the whole picture of God's plan as it relates to our life but if we trust in His Will, in the end His Will be the best option to be taken.

Mymave: Everything happens for a reason, as there is a proper time and purpose in heaven for everything that happens here on earth. It is comforting to know that God knows all of our needs and the fact that He provides these to us even without asking is a sign of his benevolence and great love for us. Prayer then should also be in the form of our thanksgiving and grateful acknowledgment of the blessings we have received from Him even if we hadn't asked for it.

When my prayers are not answered the way I would like them to be, I do not get discouraged from prayer, although I sometimes hesitate and wonder why.

Chances of successful prayer are increased by the numbers of people who pray with you and for you.

I think that in most cases, prayers are answered, although sometimes the results are not tailored specifically to our requests, but come in disguise.

I think we have to look for the answers as well as pray. Last weekend my ex-mother-in-law and I were really blessed to find answers to our questions in the bible even though we did not know where to look. It made us see the tension within the church in a new light and realize that it is okay for christians to disagree but anger lets the devil in and that needs to be addressed. Hopefully all the politics in the church will decrease so we can continue being members at this church. That is something else for us to pray about.

Hi, I was moved by you blog, and I felt I need to comment on this. Sometimes we pray for others, most of the time, for our needs. I experienced being very desperate in praying for the recovery of my mom from her lingering illness. I prayed so hard it almost hurt, because even in sleep, the whispers are more of prayers and pleas. But then, it was not answered. When the pain subsided, I thought I was not gonna pray again. But I realized, God has been generous to me, the gift of life itself is a proof.. How enlightening it is to pray and give thanks even for unanswered prayers..

Lioness: Your outlook towards unanswered prayers is very admirable and encouraging. In the midst of adversities and difficult trials unanswered prayers become a catalyst, trying to make sense of it all doesn't make much sense since what may seem logical for us is not the best option meant by God for us. Thanks for sharing your views.

First, I just want you to know that I am new here and I just started blogging 2 days ago.

Ever heard of the book PRAYER OF JABEZ by BRUCE WILKINSON? I suggest that you read it. Why you ask? Because it teaches us the right way to pray.

I have read that book 3yrs ago. After reading it, I was told to write a list of  my prayer requests regardless of how impossible it may seem (FOR NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD). I was supposed to keep it so I can write down the dates when they all do come true. Unfortunately I lost it but it doesn't mean I don't remember what I wrote down.

First on my list was my own house & lot, second was my own car, third was my own business and fourth was trips abroad.

My husband just lost his job then so you know how it would seem so far out for my requests to come true. But you know what.. after 3 years, I already have the first 2. And I know thru the grace of God all things are possible if you claim and believe in Jesus. It's not just all about faith but having a relationship with God. Talk to him thru prayer. That book will teach you the right way to pray. Godspeed.

Missoddinphil, thank you for sharing us your valuable experience on prayer.  I will try to look for this book and read to learn more on how to effectively pray and receive the things we request from God.   Most important, one must have faith when praying for the granting of our petitions are done according to your faith.

Chepay, in praying, we must remember that we are only requesting for our petitions.  So to complain and be resentful when it isn't granted is inappropriate.  But the experience teaches us to be more patient and trusting in God's ways for His ways are better than ours for He definitely knows better.  But to pray with unwavering faith, surely God will hear them and act on it in accordance with His will.

My prayers do get answered .... just not always in the way I had originally hoped. My husband wants to start his own business ... so I've been praying for guidance for him and wisdom for the both of us.

Has prayer ever done anything for you, or anyone you know? Feel free to give an example if you can if prayer has worked. Should we pray for you?...
my prayer being answered.......
