Three years ago, my Yamaha Portasound finally gave up its digital ghost.
I unscrewed the casing and tried cleaning up its insides. It was no use.
The wear and tear of constant travel, power spikes and kids’ food spills must have overwhelmed the electronic piano’s will to survive.
I packed it up and gave it to Sophie, who said she knew someone who could recondition it.
Later, she made it work again and donated it to a special children’s school.
Sophie’s dream is to set up and run her own school for kids with special needs.

Meanwhile, settling back into my adopted city, I found the mall’s music stores safe sanctuaries to ease my hunger for piano sound.
Irresistible musical brothels to arouse my musical libido.
I once wrote a blog about this, about making love to a piano.
I can’t help it.
I’m a man overflowing with lust.

Then I discovered that I could have more time and privacy for quick afternoon delights at my son’s music school, while waiting to pick him up.
Occasionally, I would sneak into a vacant piano room and do a quickie romance with the ivory keys.
There I could improvise, without becoming self-conscious at onlookers ogling my pretty hands like at the mall.

This instant video was taken early last year.
I was clearly nervous, and stumbled on the keys a number of times.
Aside from this, you’ll probably notice some nice disturbing things.
The ugly marks on my right hand, for instance.
Hmm. Self-inflicted cuts? Old scars acquired in battle? Birthmarks?
Hmmm.

And there are other curious things you can see or hear in the video.
Let’s see you point them out and what they mean.
I know you wanna satisfy your curiosity.
Indulge yourself.
Let's just hope you don't get hot and bothered with dirty thoughts about my musical brothel...

I've just uploaded it, Youtube is still processing the video for public access. Pls wait for a few minutes...
  • gingersoul said on Jul 03, 2009....
    Still waiting, dude.....:-)

But I already know the video and the origin of those marks on your right hand so...;-p

Psst: i will not tell though......I will leave others the thrill to guess....lol..

  • gingersoul said on Jul 03, 2009....
    Yep, saw it.......lovely Beth ...:-)
  • moonriver said on Jul 03, 2009....
    hi ginger.
you knew earlier about the video?
damn. i told paris hilton not to release it to the internet wilds without my consent.
that woman is never to be trusted... ;-p
as for the marks on my right hand: i'd still be interested to hear your version of it.

  • gingersoul said on Jul 03, 2009....
Moon....ah, but that Paris is a biotch .....you should know better....tsk..tsk...

Still interested in my version? It's always that one.....*wink*
  • diabolicdame said on Jul 03, 2009....
'nice disturbing things'??!! LOL.. isnt that ironic! hahaha.. I will come back when I have some better connectivity later.. right now the kind of disturbances I will see will be more of the annoying dc type.. hehehe.. the piano looks great by the way.. and that scar.. I'll bet its some kind of 'love bite' or love cut.. its certainly a neat one! hehe.. :-)
  • moonriver said on Jul 03, 2009....
ginger, yeah, took me sometime to realize i should've kept that paris biotch at bay with a 10-foot pole.
    which one is your version?
    that embarrassing one? ((double wink))

    hi ddame
    yeah, 'nice disturbing things.'
you know me, lady. i'm a bundle of contradictions, a veritable nutcase.
hey, i hope no more dc's disturb you today.
they are such an irksome ritual. lol
love bite, huh? on the wrist and hands?
man, she must've been a mighty intractable she-wolf, with powerful arms and jaw, to be able to have done that to me... ;-p

  • Lucytorial said on Jul 03, 2009....

Having been dazzled by your hands I can't help but keep watching.

I have a thing for hands, they are most telling, yours moonie are very lovely hands... ((lucy slaps herself and wipes dribble off side of mouth))

Now disturbing things... hmm let me take another look, just one more look okay?

  • Lucytorial said on Jul 03, 2009....
no it didn't work, your clunky but thats from not practicing, still the only disturbing thing I could see was your hands... your hands moonie.. take them away!
  • moonriver said on Jul 03, 2009....
    psst. lucy.
yeah, yeah. i dont like it, but it appears that my hands are the most disturbing thing on the video.
nice disturbing hands, driven by a frighteningly pure mind.
they crawl into your innermost sanctums and tamper with your hypothalamus.
    ((devilish cackle in the background))

i play clunky? omg, that's a relief to hear, my friend.
if you had said i played excellently, i would have clunked you on the head for uttering such unconscionable nonsense. lol.

  • diabolicdame said on Jul 03, 2009....
Ok first of all I wouldnt discount you finding a she-wolf at all.. you're capable of anything! lol.. and secondly.. man.. you wake up wayyy to early!! hehe.. :-)
  • Lucytorial said on Jul 03, 2009....
moon clunky is as clunky does, I couldn't say it was perfect... sheesh.. those hands though! nice fingers, but with the marks of a man who has certainly seen his share of action.
  • CreativeWoman said on Jul 03, 2009....
Hmmm.  I'm guessing the marks on your hands came from a jungle adventure somewhere.

    ddame, oh you can't imagine.
she-wolves of all shapes and scents prowl this city 24/7.
but i allow only one she-wolf to bite me where it counts. lol
still surprised that i wake up early?
maybe you should read this, if you haven't yet... ;-p

oh btw. what inspired me to post this was something that happened last night.
jiggy's best friend was sleeping over.
i was cooking their favorite jang geum chicken dinner.
they were watching the taiwanese hit, the secret. (i saw the movie earlier.)
it was a love story about two star-crossed music students, who found magic in an old piano room.
i love old musty pianos, and after watching the movie, jiggy and i both want one now!
i told him we'd have to content ourselves with his music school's small piano cubicles until we can save enough to buy a kawai acoustic ks-5f, or a kawai electronic cn2.

    lucy, clunky's the right word.
    no complaints here... :-)
i sense that you've gone a bit ga-ga over my hands and fingers, my friend.
now i'm glad i decided not to show you my other appendages. lol

  • Lucytorial said on Jul 03, 2009....
I fear I might faint! seriously moon, hands are the biggest factor in deciding if a man is worthy of me.  When I met my husband his hands took my breath away, I knew that everything else would be in perfect order after that LOL

btw, you will get sore wrists holding your middle fingers so high on the keys... ((I use to play classical myself and got wrapped on my nuckles often for doing the same))
  • Zayda said on Jul 03, 2009....
Moonie: You have lovely hands. And, I hope that you take this as a compliment, but your hands are much younger looking than I expected.
  • Me-Myself&I said on Jul 03, 2009....

don't be so hard on yourself. can't be perfect allll of the time *smile* you got good taste in tunes. :~) yup, you have some long fingers there Moonriver. for the scars, huh, well they look like grease burns.

i myself too, love a piano. thanks for the quickie concert! *smile*

Big hands, long fingers , perfect for plucking the ivory. those marks on the hands come from late night prowling.
  • moonriver said on Jul 03, 2009....
    hi cw.
    ok, i'm noting that down.
most of my jungle adventures made their mark on my legs and feet.
but yeah, could be on the hands too.
i'm not saying yes or no for now.
i'll reveal later, my friend, after more guesses come in... :-)

    lucy yoohoo!
well, don't drool too much over my hands, and don't faint here for god's sake, or people will start talkin! lol

that's what jiggy tells me too, about my fingers.
but i tell him, "go practise your aaron routines, and i'll go belt out my blues."
my elder brother and i taught ourselves, and only our sister has formal training (and a bit of rapped knuckles too, at first).
i'm so glad no tutor was ever there to rap my knuckles. lol

  • woman said on Jul 03, 2009....
Yes, indeed, you do have lovely hands and arms too. Thank you for sharing Moon. Both the hands and the music.
  • queenparanoia said on Jul 03, 2009....
ok this is weird for me... anotehr sign that it's time to learn to play the piano... lol.. ive been thinking a lot about it mr. werewolf... i saw some cool tutorrials on youtube... i'm actually planning to buy my little sister those cheap electronic pianos on the mall... well if i have enough money from the barbecue thing...lol... ;-)

but that was great mr moon... your hands look like someone who lived their life to the fullest... ;-)
  • moonriver said on Jul 03, 2009....
zayda, i'm taking your words as a great complement.
one curious thing about my hands and arms is that they seem to "change personality" when viewed from different angles.
my hands, for example, look smooth and youngish when seen palm up, but look weathered and wrinkled with age when seen palm down.
my arms look a bit feminine when seen from one side, and masculine when seen from the other side.
i've long suspected that i might be following the androgynous tracks of michael jackson... :-)

me-my, i will note down your guess: grease burns
    could be well be, actually.
i've incurred a couple of nasty skillet burns this past month.
but the video was taken early last year... :-)
my long fingers also make my guitar fingering easier, i found out early in college.
thanks for the kind words, my friend.

msstar, i see your guess is a bit similar to ddame: late-night prowling.
now that i think about it, you might be closer to the truth than you can imagine.
luckily, my kids all took their long fingers from me.
it helps them manage keyboards and fingerboards of all sorts, i see now.
    thanks for dropping by, friend.

  • moonriver said on Jul 04, 2009....
    thanks, woman.
like i told zayda, my hands and arms have their old and young sides, masculine and feminine sides.
i'll surely need a longer period of practice before i can share some piano music with you again.
    thanks for dropping by, friend.

hi queenie, i feel weird too, as i noticed you had posted a blog about ... ta-daan! your hands!
(gonna write my own comment there in a while.)
i hope you can save enough for piano lessons, my friend.

  • secretlife said on Jul 04, 2009....

and see.. I just knew love had something to do with this post! Even if it is a lovey dovey movie! hehehe.. :-)
  • moonriver said on Jul 04, 2009....
    hi secret.
it's a pleasant surprise to know that your sister plays oido too.
my sister plays the piano mostly by sight-reading. also her daughter.
i'm different: i listen to how a piece is played, i study the structure, i try to reproduce it, i improvise.
i often tell her i'm envious of her, because although i can read notation, i can play that way only haltingly.
i've never had the patience to plod through the written pieces measure for measure.
she tells me, in turn, that she's envious when she hears me play, "because you feel so unshackled" (in her words).
"the music is in your heart..." i like the way you put it... :-)

ddame, yes, i remember having pointed this out some months back.
you and i, we both like the pre-dawn hours, but only in reverse. lol!

jiggy and his friend have downloaded all the music sheets, midi's and mp3's from the secret, and have sworn to me they'll try to find an old piano room and see if they could replicate the magic, haha. kids!
    have you seen that movie?

hi moon! i loved your video of "beth", now i'm singing it in my head lol! i don't play piano, never have, so i can't tell you if you are clunky or not, sounded good to me :)  i was searching the video for all the curious things, looking for shadows on the wall, reflections in the keys, a stray werewolf running by, but found nothing! i did see the marks on the hand...my guess (don't laugh) is that you had plantars warts that you had burned off and that was the scarring. i knew you were going to laugh.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Jul 05, 2009....

I had a weird dream about you. huh....;~) While it is still on my mind, i'd like to share it. You said something about curious things that can be seen or heard on this video..... Wellllll, it stayed on/in my mind. Last night my mind took me to your video....lol.... anyways, all i could see, was your open door. huh.... I stood there with my hand on the door knob, waiting for something. Then i heard your music, i walked in. The end of the dream! wow

Alright, i know that was weird. So, i came here this morning and took another peek. huh....Sure enough the door was cracked. Go figure. Well, there you go, my dream of you. *smile*

I hope you are having a good day! Take care my friend. xo ~see ya

  • moonriver said on Jul 09, 2009....
    Hi everyone.
Here's another shorty, a follow-up to my earlier video romp in a favorite musical brothel.
It comes from more recent footage.
Featuring (a) my hands again, this time without the scars (which had long healed), and (b) Jiggy and his violin, as a sort of background.

It's too late tonight for me to tell the story of how I got the scars, to point out a few other oddities in the video, and to reply to individual comments.
    Tomorrow. I promise... :-)

  • queenparanoia said on Jul 09, 2009....
the lady on the phone was very funny mr werewolf... ;-)
  • moonriver said on Jul 11, 2009....
ok. i know. i've procrastinated long enough.
so this is how i got the scars:

one evening in february last year, i slipped on a slimy-wet trail near the house.
i was holding an umbrella in one hand, and a flashlight and other stuff in the other hand, and negotiating the steep trail under a heavy downpour.
i slipped, and tried to soften my headlong fall by grasping onto a stone wall beside me.
the stones were of limestone, with sharp edges.
the cuts weren't pretty. they were more like ragged gashes.
they were starting to heal when the video was taken.

    so there.
it appears that msstar's and cw's guesses were closest to what actually happened.

as for the other oddities, i see only two:

    1. the door is ajar. (only me-myself&i pointed it out.)
    simple reason: force of habit.
whether at home, or at my workplace, i rarely close the door fully, with latch snapping to its slot, except to lock up at night.
even when staying in hotels during my travels, i've often had to remind myself to close and lock the door for my own security.
i think i should blog about this odd habit later.

    2. what's that L-shaped (T-shaped?) thingamajig on top of the piano?
a stool? a tripod? handle of tennis racket?
and what is it doing on top of the piano?
i don't know. last time i checked that cubicle, it was no longer there.
it isn't mine, and i only noticed it after i uploaded this video to youtube.
you have no idea too? let's all forget all about it.
whatever it was, it surely didn't improve my piano playing... :-)

  • moonriver said on Jul 11, 2009....
    hi ginger.
my son and his classmates have all gone a-ga-ga about this film.
it's a sweet love story alright, with shades of somewhere in time.
you are right about the great piano pieces and other instrumentals.
but what really got to me were the two bike scenes and their music sound tracks:

the bike, starting on 0:6:15 of part 1/10

and ride with me, starting on  0:6:43 of part 3/10

in short, i've fallen in love with these two musical pieces, short and sweet as they are. (jiggy and i have the longer mp3 audio versions.)

and yes, the father-and-son scenes are sweet, hilarious, outrageous fun!
i can totally identify with the dad's guitar and tango efforts, haha.
it's something like jiggy and i would probably do 3, 5 years from now, when he starts getting lovesick spells.

    hi fraggles.
you are so spot on, about beth playing in your head.
it played in my head for an entire month after i first heard it on the radio.
planters warts, huh? nope. i'm not laughing at you.
just smiling at the funny image of my hands with warts... :-)

  • moonriver said on Jul 11, 2009....
    hi infernal.
yup, it does take a lot of practice for piano hands to develop a mind of their own... :-)
but with enough interest, time and opportunity, anyone can do it.
psst. friend. read the scoop a few comments back.
    it's a bit anti-climactic, isn't it? lol

    me-my, dear friend.
that's an incredible dream you shared.
i don't know what else to say...
maybe one of these days i'll dream about my playing in the piano room with the door slightly ajar, then someone comes in, and voila... i see you smiling, and i say, "come in, friend, and enjoy the music!"
    wouldn't that be a mind-boggling serial dream? yeeeaahhh... :-)

Moon......about you leaving the doors open.....

My ex had the same "phobia" when we would go to some public place.....at the restaurant...he absolutely had to seat at the corner with his shoulder against the wall.....and never, never giving his back to the room...

Years of military training in the Navy, you see... ;-)

And about those two clips you posted....i love them too...
I can perfectly see you and Jiggy quarreling like that father and son, you trying to teach him something and he laughing at you.....

You know, the similarities i see are even more.....but i won't tell ....;-p..
  • moonriver said on Jul 12, 2009....
lucy, you noticed "the fuzz," ha!
but that's in the second video, which doesn't count. lol

about this habit of leaving doors open... only recently have i really thought about it.
i realize now it has deeper roots in childhood than i first imagined.
nothing evil and horrible, i assure you.
in fact, thinking about how i developed this habit gives me happy memories... :-)
it deserves a blog of its own.

ginger, military training really does impart some lifelong habits, manners, even posture.
i could write down a list of 50 habits i have, coming from that direction.
the brisk walk, the reticence in giving info, the fondness for long blades, the ability to sleep on a narrow bench, the 4 a.m. wakeup call...
oh, and i was going to blog exactly about this too, starting with my boy scout days, through my cadet officers corps training, all the way to my 30s in the field.

curiously, all these experiences also reinforced my "open-door" habit, instead of the more logical "locked-door" habit.
i have the same "room phobia" as your ex -- always position yourself for maximum view and maneuver, minimum unseen threats -- developed during my underground years.

    even more similarities, huh?
i don't sneak out to smoke with the bad students, if that's what you mean. haha

  • CreativeWoman said on Jul 12, 2009....
I'm glad that nasty spill didn't leave you with permanent scars and that you are still able to tickle those ivories.

However, I would have thought that your spill would have been more dramatic such as something like running through a jungle as you were being chased by monkeys to only find yourself tripped up by a fallen tree or something.  Then you had to fight off them off bare handed.

    Just sayin' ...  :-)

  • moonriver said on Jul 13, 2009....
    hi cw.
oh man... if you only have an idea of how many nasty spills and falls i've had in my hyperactive adult life (not to mention in my childhood).
countless slips from muddy mountain trails and slimy river fords, wall-climbing snags, and several bike accidents, to mention a few...

and yes, running through a jungle and slipping off a mossy fallen tree.
that was almost the exact scenario.
except that we were not being chased by monkeys.
we were running after them, hunting them down for food.
(i know, i know. the peta will be after my head when they read this.)

all in all, however, my scar record is mostly concentrated on my legs and feet.
i once wrote a blog about this: body marks galore.
my lovely piano hands remain intact. thankfully... :-)

  • CreativeWoman said on Jul 13, 2009....
moon, I remember that post.  That's exactly why I guessed jungle in the first place.  It sounded so..."you".

I have a few battle scars of my own, but from nothing as exciting as chasing monkeys....well, unless you count chasing my niece and nephew around when they were little many years gone by now.  :-)  Those were a different kind of monkeys.  lol

cw -- the monsoon rain season has turned patches of my neighborhood into a mini-rain forest, minus the top canopy of tall trees, like what i wrote in a previous blog.
so, in a way, you still guessed right.
    minus the monkeys.
or rather, with me as monkey. lol
