vista point 030

Yesterday at the birthday/anniversary work bash a discussion popped up.  Apparently new surveys have concluded that all but one state of the US has significant problems with obesity.  The discussion moved to the problem of how now days more children are overweight and why that might be.  Electronics in all forms seemed to be the conclussion of how we have come to this point.  We allow our children to sit and listen to iPods, play video games, watch TV, etc. instead of getting outdoors and moving around.

Growing up I was lucky enough to live in a small neighborhood inhabited by at least a half dozen of my cousins or other relatives.  The neighborhood was sandwiched between pastures of a dairy and a small wooded area, so our little rat pack of cousins were often outdoors exploring nature.  We'd wade in the stream catching tadpoles, building small dams or playing games in the woods.  When not in the woods or pastures we rode bikes, played hide and seek or flew kites.  In other words, we moved around a LOT!

I wish my kids had had more of what I did.  It was good to come home tired and dirty from climbing trees, playing tag or wading in the water.  It's sad to realize that we don't live in a world where we can kick our kids outdoors and let them run wild for a few hours without having to worry about child predators or other harm.

Wonderful post, uni!  And the image of sweetie is so lovely.

I am thankful, that we have so far been lucky with our choice of environment for the girls.  Whether in the north part of Germany, where they were born and grew up for the most part of their early childhood, or in the south part of Germany where they spent Summer holidays with their grandmother in the house that has been with the family for generations , or here in our second home in the Netherlands, we are lucky to be surrounded with nature and a caring community, who watches after another.  I think it is absolutely important for children to grow up with nature, and have a sense of community, not only for their sense of self, but also to encourage a lifestyle that could be nurtured and passed on to the next generation.

PBW - Raising children with a sense of community and with exposure to nature is important.  I know that I benefited from it and hope to pass some of that along to my children.

you know i was very lucky to grew up in the province here in the philippines where i can ran around, play in the fields and stuff like that... i wish my sister would have teh same experince like i have, well she still do but only on summer vacations... ahhhh daydreaming under a tree.. i used to do that ( and still do by the way) and i love it!!!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
queenie - there's nothing like daydreaming under a tree, is there?  It's one of the best ways to relax.
  • mixednuts said on Jul 02, 2009....
This was so cool! Did you have a tree fort like I did?
Those were great days! Vista Point!?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
mixed - I did in fact have a tree fort!  I built it with my cousins in the woods.
  • mixednuts said on Jul 02, 2009....
Tree forts were the great escape from the adult world ....back in the day.
  • beyondtheveil said on Jul 02, 2009....
unique- I wrote a post similar to this once. And the fact is, we were almost never inside. We created the things to do without adults coaxing us. If we didn't have it, we made it.

    Big difference compared to today.

mixed - there are days I wish I still had a tree fort.

My that picture makes Sweetie look so tall too!  Lucky gals you both are for various reasons.  It is true, there's been a gradual slide towards less activity in childhood.  I don't know what happened with me because I was always active, outside running in the woods, playing in the creek, working with horses, etc. and yet I still managed to gain my weight ... BUT, I will say that apparently it wasn't all me, there was something beyond my control giving me the weight gain as I came to learn a couple of years ago.  Now at least I'm on top of it.  I know that because of my own personal experience, when I choose to have children, there isn't going to be TV as a full time babysitter, video games for boredom, etc.  There's going to be lots of activity and outside time because I don't want my kids to deal with what I have to.  Also, I'll make sure they're eating healthy and like it.  I know that was one tough thing that my mom regrets, she didn't really get on top of that with me, and also it was hard because my dad is a string bean and trying to cook food to keep him going was basically counter active for the both of us.  Ah well, live and learn.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
Hege - I hope you didn't read this to mean that anyone with weight issues had them due to lack of activity.  I know all too well that there are a lot of reasons it happens.  Just that exersize (play) for children is so good for them.  I'm sure you will make a great mom teaching your children the fun and value of exersize and balanced diet.  Just the fact that it concerns you now tells me that :)

Build that tree fort! Get some help and show the kids what they are missing these days! They are missing out on so much!

Its an issue here to Uni, I grew up bashing around the bush and streets as a kid, constantly on the move.

There are spots you can find that offer that but boy is it hard to find them.  Having a connection to the land in some form is very important.

Sweetie looks so rested on that limb.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
mixed - I'm afraid I dont own any land with trees.

Lu - I think it's becoming less and less common to find kids who are connected to the land.  I know I wasn't as familiar with it as my grandmother or father.
  • Lucytorial said on Jul 02, 2009....
Thats why I love this area we live in, kids still get to be kids.  In fact they're always out and aboutbeing active.  You can't do that in suburbia or the city, such a shame.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
Lu - yes, your neck of the woods is great for kids!  Where I live it's a nearly completely stripped of nature.  If it weren't for the runs out to the water she would never see nature.  I hate that about where I live, but short of finding a new job in the country there is no real solution.
  • Lucytorial said on Jul 02, 2009....
well it gets you out there too so it benefits you both really.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
Lu - yes, she usually has to be coaxed away from her electronics, but once we're out there we both unwind a lot. :)
  • Battycat said on Jul 02, 2009....
Great post uni, i think a lot of the problem is over protection of kids, they just dont have the freedom we did. There's so much bad stuff in the media that parents are scared to let their kids be kids. I'm sure there was just as many terrible things going on in our time, the difference is it wasn't talked about, and you didn't here it on the news.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
batty - maybe.  I'm not sure.  Unfortunately there's no way to prove or disprove that theory.  I guess parent's are just more aware now than they used to be.  I also wonder if the reduced size of family doesn't play into it.  Back when there were 4-8 kids per family it would have been impossible to keep them all inside.
  • Battycat said on Jul 02, 2009....
True, and a large group of kids look after and look out for each other.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
batty - there is safety in numbers, and family is good about sticking around.

I have spent many summers laying of the branches of some trees or on the sand....
Nature has this way to nurture young souls, as well as old ones.

I am happy when my daughter goes to visit her papa...he lives in the middle of nowhere ....trees, deers, goats, cats, coyotes crying at night, crickets singing, armadillo running, barking dogs, birds chirping ....the wind roaming along the silence of the vast field around the house....

And when we visit Italy....we stay at the beach since early morning until sunset and well into the night....

    Its good for her being.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
ginger - it is very good for their souls to be in nature.  Your girl is lucky to have a variety of nature.

You couldn't keep me in the house when I was kid. I was not surrounded by by fields or nature but the concrete jungle. It was a different way to grow up but I knew no different. Our favorite play ground was the old abandoned factories or warehouses and the never ending junk we could destroy. I think now of the stuff we got up too and am amazed we all survived. The never ending call of "CAR" when playing football on the street. We didn't have tree forts but hidden dens in amongst an old factory. I had a personal and favorite one on the second floor which you could only access by climbing through a hole in a wall which was hidden by an old metal locker. I ran away and hid there for 2 days rather than let myself be baptised. (Now thats a story and a half) I think you have given me something to write about :)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jul 02, 2009....
super - but you had neighbors to play with, which is not the norm these days.  I love the idea of a hidden secret fort!!  I once ran away from home so that I could get some peace and quiet from my aunt's harping.
  • diabolicdame said on Jul 02, 2009....
What a beautiful shot! I have never done that.. and I can see I've definitely missed out! Your childhood sounds lovely.. I'm glad you get to take your kids out.. however little it may be..

dd - well ...... it's never too late to go outdoors and play! LOL  It is very nice to be able to share even a bit of it with both my kids.
