I’m stuck…I’m developing this web application and there is this little part that I just can’t quite figure out yet. I’ve been trying and trying to look at it from every angle possible. I think I’ll take a breather, take a step back, re-group and then try again.

This is precisely what I like about programming. For me it’s like putting together a complex jigsaw puzzle. The pieces have to fit just right and in the end you have something great.

What do you do when you’re stuck on something and can’t seem to move forward?

somehow, i never realized that you're a code monkey, allaroundgirl. that's really cool. :>

when i'm stuck, i generally like to try to work on something unrelated, b/c i know my brain will continue to work on the matter subconsciously.

I"d usually sit back, ease my mind a bit, to rebuild my energy..like de-stressing. :) Then my mind would work again.

Me, I go and do something else to clear my head.

sometimes I swear loudly but most often I'll do something else unrelated to work (like surf the web a bit) to interupt my thinking long enough to take a fresh look.

Once in a great while I'll call a colleague for input. Sometimes a discussion of the problem results in a different perspective.

that's what i like about my work - it's like putting together a puzzle!

I don't program, I write the technical specs and do designs but it's like writing instructions so you basically have to take something down to it's most basic level and then put it back together step by step.

    I like the challenge.

When I get stuck I walk away from it. Usually clearing my head will allow me to go back later and have a new perspective.

I was working on a billing application a few years ago, and the 'rules' were so complicated to me that i'd often wake up in the middle of the night because I was dreaming about them!

I used to work in accounting field for 5years and decided to switch from my accounting path to web programming and design so I am currently doing my freelance job at home because I am self-studying IT stuffs at same time. I sometimes need some help for coding and other programs while doing my projects. I do enjoy this job very much although it gives us some headaches and head spins. heehee Please check Program Yourself

    Take a break. Relax.

    Work on something totally unrelated.

You'll find that you'll be unstuck when you get back!

    Good luck!

I agree sadsack, I find If I do something else for abit and come back to what earlier had me so stumped, I usually find that suddenly things look alittle clearer than they did before. It's like one of those "I should of had a V8" moments. Oh, oh, does that date me:)

Usually if I get stuck on some of the php hacking/editing on Tech Rant I end up leaving it alone for some time, and do something else, then return with a fresh mind. It works... sometimes!
