Roger Federer has now won 9 majors. That’s one more than Agassi and Jimbo. Obviously, Federer has now cemented his status as one of the greatest of all time in Tennis. He might win more than 14 or he might just retire tomorrow. But, he’s become a living legend at 25. Roddick must really hate Federer as he has lost 3 slam finals and a semi final to Federer. That’s 4 opportunities wasted for Roddick. Had he won all these games, he would be standing here with 5 slams, one more than Roger’s 4. Roddick could have become one of the all time greats. Instead, he remains a one slam wonder that truly didn’t deserve to win even that one slam. We all remember that Nalbandian was 2 sets up on him and had 2 match points on Roddick before he crashed and burned. I think the Wimbledon Final 04 was the career crossroad for Andy and Roger. Whoever won that would go on to become one of the greats. Whoever lost, would be a broken man. That’s exactly what happened. Andy has not won any slams after his U.S. Open. In fact, everytime he gets close to it, Federer takes his chance away from him. Last Sunday was a chance for Roddick to get his ship back on track. Had he won the U.S. Open yesterday, he would have become the unofficial No. 2 in the world. But the difference would have been him beating the great Federer. Imagine what that would have done to Roddick’s career. Now, however, Roddick is richer than before, $1.1 M prize money, but he still has only 1 slam. Can he become an all time great or is he going to be a flash in the pan? Unfortunately, the latter sounds more likely.
