Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy, serving time for his role in a gambling scandal that rocked the league, was released from aVacheron Constantin Florida federal prison to a halfway house early Wednesday morning.
Gerry Donaghy told USA TODAY that his son wasZenith released near midnight from the prison camp in Pensacola, Fla., to avoid media scrutiny.
The father said his son was on his way to Tampa on a bus. He will enter a halfway house to complete his 15-month prison sentence, which ends Oct. 24. "His frame of mind is very good," Gerry Donaghy said. "He's looking forward to Santosseeing his kids. The big thing he wants to do is get a job and get out of the halfway house and go to house arrest."
Donaghy, 42, pleaded guilty in 2007 to engaging in wire fraud Tank A Viswhen he provided inside information to gamblers. Two co-conspirators, friends of Donaghy's, also were convicted in the scheme. Donaghy's release comes a week after it was revealed that surgery, which may not be performed until he is released, Zaranek said.
Donaghy reported to the camp in September. He said he took thousands of dollars from a professional gambler in exchange for insider tips Tank Louison NBA games, including some he worked. Donaghy lived in Bradenton, Fla., just south of Tampa, before he went to prison. His wife divorced him after his arrest. They have four daughters.
