With the recent rash of babies that seems to have blossomed I thought it might be fun to do a poll on the three best children's books you've ever read or had read to you.  Perhaps it will be helpful to the new parents and of course it's always fun to reflect back as a veteran parent. (notice how I avoided the word old?)

My top picks are:

Cookies and Milk (my son's favorite)
Green Eggs and Ham (my favorite as a kid and my kids liked it a lot too)
Guess How Much I Love You? (my daughter's favorite)

I also liked The Kissing Hand, Oh the Places You'll Go and The Giving Tree.

What are your favorite children's books?

I'm still a big kid, but as a child I read all "THE HARDY BOYS" books.
"NANCY DRU" was a chidhood hero of mine as well!

mixed - I read the Nancy Drew series too, but I was aiming for smaller children's books.

alabama - I've seen that book.  A good one for small children.

ginger - Seuss books are great!  I still own a few personally just because I can't bear to part with them.

Lu - all great books.  I had forgotten the Pooh series, but my niece really liked those.

Huh, let me think back, since I didn't really get to keep any of my children's books because they burned when our home did, I'll have to start with things I read more around the age of 10 ...

Are You There God?  It's Me, Margaret - Judy Blume
The Saddle Club series- Bonnie Bryant
The Black Stallion series - Walter Farley

and I think a couple I sort of remember from when I was younger than that were Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit by Joel Chandler Harris, The Magic School Bus books by Joanna Cole and the Woodland Folk books by Tony Wolf.

I like my uncle Benny's books. The Loudest Noise In The World, and Gillespie and the Guards, by Ben Elkin. He wrote about a dozen children's books. When I was young I liked the Walter Farley series about horses, and the Bronc Burnett series by Wilfred McCormick. I also like Dr. Seuss, The Sneetches, The Empty Pants, and all the rest.

I loved the Narnia books CS Lewis, and the Jills Pony books, anything to do with horses.

    1. Goodnight Moon ~~ Margaret Brown
    2. Where the Wild Things Are ~~ Maurice Sendak
    3. The Lorax ~~ Dr. Seuss (actually anything Seuss)
    4. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie ~~ Laura Joffe Numeroff

Nancy Drew Books fit the tween reading category (not children's books) in most library systems, while Chronicles of Narnia are typically classified as young adult books (not children's) in most library systems.

Goodnight Gorilla - a favorite for my nephews and also for me!
    The Madeline Series
    Sheep in a Jeep
    Stellaluna
    Little Miss Spider

There are so many wonderful children's books.

As an adult, I've enjoyed Princess Bride, The Narnia Series, Harry Potter ...

You'd think I'd be big on this now but I can't remember what my favs were. I know I had One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and a lot of books by Little Golden Books like The Good Manner Book but I honestly can't recall others. I read a lot of kids mystery books like the Danny Dunn series and some others as well as lots of non-fiction about dinosaurs, astronomy, volcanoes, whales, weather, evolution, and ice ages. That was up until I was about 10 anyway. After that I because interested in hockey and read books about that.

Well Dr. Seuss seems popular everywhere and he is here to. Princess really loves the fox in the socks and how the Grinch Stole Christmas. She/we :) also love the Mr Men and Little Miss books. My favorite I'm still working my way through with princess now but keep forgetting whos voice is whos, is The Hobbit. Princess is lapping it up. We have just found the ring. The Narnia ones are next but if there are fairies init princess is happy normally.

My personnal favorites as a kid were The Hobbit, Treasure Island and The Lion the witch and the Wardrobe.

my kids LOVED to be read to----

I have all the Dr Seuss books-

There's a little treasure called "I'll Love You Forever" that is my favorite.  I cry every time!  Also we had a tradition where my father read Twas The Night Before Christmas and he continued this with my children....

My oldest loved Beauty and the Beast and had the introduction memorized by 3....

They all love the little treehouse series when they were 4/5....

I read them Wrinkle In Time and love L'Engle.

Love Love The Hobbit.......Oh there are so many!

Group reply - thank you everyone.  There are some books mentioned above that I'm not familiar with and now will likely go looking for.  I see that Dr. Seuss is an international hit, which doesn't surprise me a bit.  There also seems to be a theme of the mystery books for the kids that are a bit older.

I waited to comment on this because I love so many books I didn't think I could narrow it down to three. Lots of my favorites have already been named but I'll add a couple.

Velveteen Rabbit~It's so beautiful. Secret, it will make you cry too.

James and the Giant Peach~ The book is so much better than the movie.

My Side of the Mountain~It's fabulous adventure book. Great for kids 9-teens.

Bud, Not Buddy~A sliced of history and humanity. My students loved this book.

I grew up on the old classic fables.....

    Rapunzel

    The Princess and the Pea

    Jack and the Beanstalk etc....

I remember Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from way back before the movie!

And I had one book, now thankfully banned!  Can you believe I had "Little Black Sambo?"
