No, this isn't about transexuals. Its about transmissions.

I took driver's training in high school. The only reason for this was you could get a license at fifteen instead of sixteen. It was half a semester course and you got credit. Good deal and fun too. Most people knew how to drive anyway, but getting that license early was a natural plus.

They taught everyone, no exception, on manual transmissions. In a nine week course you got to drive a lot, and as I remember it we drove an automatic three times at the end. How much training does it take to learn how to operate an automatic? About eighteen seconds I'd imagine.

I've owned one automatic tranny in my life. That was one of the cars I had in high school which was an Oldsmobile two door hard top with that Rocket engine. I loved that car and had no choice on the transmission. I don't mind an automatic on large cars and large pick-ups, but that's all.

My wife learned on manuals and drives them like a beast, but her last two cars were a Ford Crown Victoria which only came in automatic and her new car she wanted an automatic also. That's ok, they were hers.

I'm driving a Toyota pick-up now, an old one but in great condition. I gave my 'good' one to youngest son when he went into the army. So its time for me to get a new vehicle in a few months. Maybe the prices will stay down.

I'm deciding between three. A Ford pick-up, a Jeep Wrangler, and a Mazda Miata sports car. All three would definitely have a manual tranny. I've never had a pick-up without a manual and a Jeep would have to have one also. The sports car is more of a mid to later life crisis than anything. Sometimes guys get grey hair and think they need a sports car. The girls don't look at them like they used to, so they think a sports car will help. Stupid.

I won't get one. There's no utility. Getting lumber into one would require divine help and I'm not going to Lowe's and pray about how to get my shit home. The girls can look elsewhere. When they saw the grey headed fart in the sports car that would be the end of it anyway.

But sports cars are so much fun. I had a Corvette once, but had black hair. It had a five speed manual in it too. What a life when you're single.

I can't even imagine having a sports car with an automatic. What's the use? The fun in one of those cars is the driving, the upshifting and downshifting. A sports car with an automatic is like a house without a bedroom, or flowers without color, or a girlfriend that's frigid. Sports cars with automatics are like Buicks.

So... I'll get my Ford pick-up. Four wheel drive. Five speed manual.

It will keep me from dying my hair black...and acting like a fool.

I'd rather have roomy and comfortable any day over fun and sporty.  But on a pretty sunny day, I'm usually wishing for fun and "topless."  Too bad I can't have it both ways.  A convential car and a fun car.

I had a friend who had a Cutlass Supreme powered by the notorious 350 rocket engine. It to was equipped with an automatic. Years and years ago he offered to sell it to me but I turned him down. I would have jumped on it had it been a two door, I don't care for the appearance of four door cars, at least not the collectibles. I have had several four door cars including a Crown Vic.
Back in the day I had several cool " little cars " , they were all attention getters. The problem was finding a safe place to park and red traffic lights in the middle of the night. The criminal element always seemed interested in them and would appear out of nowhere in the darkness !
I prefer driving a stick. I like the feel of the power as I shift. The automatics are faster at the track but some would disagree. I built an old Chevelle with a 454 big block once as a kid. I pulled the 400 turbo hydromatic transmission out and replaced it with an cast iron cased 2 speed powerglide. You talk about a fun ride :o)   ?    I could be elbow to elbow with people in that car and it would still launch like a champ.
Yup now you got me thinking about cars :o)  .   Go with the Ford pick-up you can't go wrong.
I have to get back outside and finish up. It's hot as hell out there ! This is the kind of day I miss my old oak tree the most :o(   !    I used to park my tractor beneath it and fall off to the ground and sleep for an hour or two :o)  . I'd often wake up in a shower of rain but it was OK.   You know, it's so hot today that I think I'm actually melting. Have a great day.

I know you didn't ask for us to vote...BUT, I say go for the sports car. Sometimes we just need to feel young and sporty. To heck with the young girls, what do they know. Take the wife or a friend and have a great time. And by all means, go for the manual!

Dang, I never really learned to drive a stick shift, but sometimes I rest my hand on my gear shift handle on my Jeep Cherokee and pretend for a second that I have one.  I know I am missing out on something visceral and empowering!

Well sounds like you've got good reasoning behind that.  Myself I've never driven a manual, but my husband does.  I've toyed around with learning, but I haven't because we can't afford for me to go screwing up big time and messing his tranny up ... and with the luck he has on that particular truck, oh it would get major screwed up.  Someday though.  Although from my little bit of experience, in an emergency, I could get us from point A to point B.  Funny that you mention this post also because I had a dream that I was driving some manual truck around.  Weird.

alabam- I've got a suggestion, for your next car get a roomy convertible. It would be family size and who doesn't feel sporty in a convertible? When I had my Olds, another guy I knew had an Olds convertible - great fun!

cayenne- I had a chance once to buy one of the original Shelby Ford Cobras, the ones made from 1965 -1970. One of my friends in my hometown had one and still talks about the stupidity in selling it. But money was tighter in those days. I'd sure like to have one though.

frags- Although I've never been away from them, I'm sure there's excitement for people getting back to manuals - its the other way to drive, the one that makes you feel the car. I've replaced one or two clutches myself, by the way.

woman- I'm going to have the 'wants' for that Mazda right up to the time I buy the Ford. It would be fun, no doubt. I could keep my present pick-up and get it. But will I? Probably not. Darn it.

wombat- Its never too late to learn. Just think, there's a shifting world waiting for you out there. You gotta try it just once. I guarantee you a thrill.

hege- Its not that difficult to learn, except for stopping on hills for some people. I don't know how much experience you've had, but a few days might make you pretty good. If you dream about it, I see some hidden desire there.

Oh gays, just l let me  tell you my experience whit cars, first, i get my first one at abaut  36? 35? dont remember, my usually car was a bicycle, for years, and a wounderfoulls normal bus, metro etc., but went to live in a town, so  i need a car,  for keep runing jobs or whatever, bhalah needs a car, as usually, a good person, ofert me to borrow one, i said yes! thanks a lot, he said have you have license? i said yes! i do,  well.. i hade.., but never drived.., but dident said that part, he said ok, i trust you, till you fine your ourn, get this. soulgirl- "this crazy license thing", does that mean everyone waits 'till eighteen or they drive earlier? I had a feeling you had driven manuals in Italy.

I've been putting off buying a new vehicle for some time now. Its difficult to justify when my truck runs so well. But its getting old, a 1995, and I'm on the highways a lot going out of state. When I go to hometown its 165 miles with no towns in between. I've been caught out there with car trouble before (once) and its no fun. A state trooper saved me.

blalah- One of my friends has used a bicycle for almost twenty years now. Since he lives in a small town its not a problem for him. And he has saved big bucks doing this. Even so, I don't know how he's done it. I couldn't be without a car, just couldn't do it.

BeyBey....yes, we wait until 18 to have a license. We can have a mini-license at 15 only for driving mopeds under 125 cc.
So the usual things for kids is to have a moped at that age and then upgrade to a car at 18. A lot better.

For the parents is financially a blessing. A nice, brand new moped doesn't cost as much as an used car and the gas is a lot cheaper
Plus kids have the time to get used to traffic rules and stuff along the way.
