Sometimes I do wonder what critics expect from a film like Stephen Sommers' VAN HELSING. I sat down to watch it with my fiancee last night, as we both fancied something a bit light, a bit of escapism and something which is a whole lot of fun. Needless to say, it fit the bill perfectly.
Sommers always packs his films with a lot of kinetic energy (ala THE MUMMY, THE MUMMY RETURNS), and VAN HELSING is no different. Never is there a dull moment, as an impressive Hugh Jackman (Van Helsing) attempts to prevent the evil Richard Roxburgh (Dracula) succeeding in his plans to unleash his countless offspring. Sure, it's all over the top, but it's such a great ride that I can't see what all the bad mouthing the film has received is all about.
I still wonder if I'm the only one who feels this way though, as Sommers does seem to have a bit of a grudge camp against him. Thoughts please...
