Black and sleek and quick as fire,

Lively as electric wire;

Sparking in the sun.

Leaps and walks the towering fence;

Imperious, in every sense

Queen of her garden.

Creatures cower, become her game;

Lazily she earns the name:

Dispassionate killer.

Yet time escapes her wicked claws,

Never feigns death in her jaws -

And slowly takes her.

Angular bones in a moulting sack,

Matted fur on her bent, ridged back -

Frightened eyes plead to me.

Slowly struggles to her feet,

Anytime is time to eat -

Always, always hungry.

Today she’s too tired to be fed,

Stumbles back into her bed

Pleads again, fights to breathe.

Weeping flesh and sores that run,

Time to sleep, my darling one -

Goodbye, Jess. Forgive me, please.

    Beautiful poem, dark and yet so true of a cat.  I'm sorry if this was written due to a recent loss of yours.

    I think this is a sad but honest reflection of what love means to a pet owner.

    It was inspired by a recent loss. It's a tragic thing to see a beautiful creature once so full of life become a scraggy bag of bones... and worse still to be called upon to judge whether her life is no longer worth living. Thanks for reading and for commenting x

    I understand totally as I had to make a similar decision recently about my own beloved moglet.

    In my family i have seen put to sleep 4 dogs.
    When i had my place i had a cat. We loved each other very much.

    I had to put her to sleep as well because of her feline leukemia.
    She had become all bones and big eyes, trembling like the North wind was shuttering her through.

    Now i have only one dog.

    I swear.....no more pet for me....well, maybe a completely white cat with blue eyes....

    Beautiful poem...

    thank you for having the strength to help your cat. i was alway grateful in the veterinary field that there is the last and final option to peacefully end a life. its a difficult responsibility. loosing a pet isnt well understood or well acknowledged by society in the first place. euthenasia is even less understood. its an awesome responsibilty and a an awesome gift. you have saved your beloved pet so much misery at the cost of your own turmoil. be at peace with your decision though my sweet ima. Your dear cat would be grateful to your selflessness. Much love and sympathy for your lost sweet one. you are so dear to me. kisses and hugs Dls
