I just saw a tv commercial for people with diabetes. Paying little attention to it, I don't remember exactly what they were trying to sell, which I suppose is their fault, except that I'm not their target audience anyway.
The star of the commercial was a middle aged to elderly man with gray hair. In the background there was a young woman. Whatever they were selling, it was to improve the man's health and vigor. I know that because at the end of the commercial they had him with a tennis racket. He was saying to live life to the fullest.
Okay, what was the subtle message? Come on, it's obvious. The message was that if you buy their product you become like that man and you get to fuck the girl. You know that is what the ad designers were thinking. So they were basically selling the girl to you, only you have to buy something else.
It reminded me of a commercial for Extends or whatever the thing was called, something to improve your sex life by making your fingers larger. There was some dorky guy doing the commercial, and in the background was a woman on a step-treadmill. For some odd reason they didn't show the woman's face once. They just showed her ass going up, down, up, down, and so on. Hmm, could that be a subliminal message?
Now I like to keep things simple and direct. I don't go for all this pseudo-subtle stuff. Here's how I would have designed both commercials.
Show the old dufus actually on top of the girl, his pants down around his ankles, same with hers, and he's plowing in a most dedicated way. While doing so, he turns to the camera and says "I have a really little dick most of the time, but since I took one of these Extends pills, my dick is a full 14 inches." And then the girl on the bottom starts moaning like crazy. Show the product, cut to black, you're done.
