A week with cousins is always interesting.  Cousins' spouses are interesting, too, but Shar's hubby Skip might take the cake.  He (and she, reluctantly, I am certain) are on a gluten-and-dairy-free diet after a biofeedback specialist more or less bastardized the Blood Type Diet and recommended an offshoot of it to them to get rid of some health complaints.  Fair enough.  I know this stuff to work to a limited extent from my own experience.

My beef is ol' Skippy's constant haranguing on the subject.  At any meal he'd have to get on the soapbox about it, making a big deal of what they "can't eat."  If someone else bought food or planned to cook a meal, he'd loudly and rudely ask if we'd got something for them as they "can't eat any of that."  Yi!  My Miss Manners alert was on level red daily, if not hourly.  Never mind that the forbidden alcohol was consumed by Sir Skippy in the form of two Scotch on the rocks daily!!  Guess it matters what it is, eh?

The thing is, if you're subject to a special diet, voluntarily or otherwise, have some manners about it.  It's no-one's issue but your own, unless you're a child.  Quietly avoid partaking of the things not on your diet and certainly don't make an issue of it.  Get your own groceries, dammit!

Im one of the ones who chooses the funky eating regime (diets don't exist for me). I always feel bad about telling people that I choose to eat differently. It makes them go to trouble. I have to put my foot down with myself and not be tempted to make them happy by eating their food.
    How silly of me.
Sir Skippy sounds very attention seeking. Is he a kangaroo?
And what was your experience with the diet?

Hi Little...you sound very polite.  It's wise to not eat to make others happy. It's a bad habit taught me as a kid...and I've fought it since I was old enough to understand weight wasn't attractive.  Not that it's kept me slim...I'm fat again and hate it, but I feel my biggest problem is not getting exercise.  My bike is so ignored!

A kangaroo?  Skippy?  Oh no...he's of the species maleus americanus afraidofagingmus.  : )  Guess I can't blame him...look what it does to people, bue shees, it'll happen regardless.

Gluten-free eating...ah, yes, it felt better for a while, clearer sinus, then it all started to return.  I found the best thing for sinus health is dental health, something I'd taken for granted since I had "good" teeth, meaning very few and far between cavities.  Once I had the wisdom molars out...what a change!  Anyway, other than gluten-free I've done whole foods...which is yummy but not always convenient.  I lost lots of weight on that one, because I cut carbs down to whole grains in limited amounts and ate only lean, lean meat except for when a huge steak craving hit, then I'd have a steak and be good for quite a while.

Then a boyfriend introduced me to Atkins as the ultimate to get the last ten off.  Ha!  Maybe if I could have stuck with it, but it's just too out of the norm for me.  At any rate, it re-primed my taste for lots of meat and fats.   Arrrrgh.  So, now, I just eat.  >sigh<

I read your "Being fat doesn't necessarily mean eating fat" post and I entirely agree with you.
I myself am quit slim because I am blessed with skinny genetics, I am also a health freak and go through bouts of exercising and slacking off but Im extremely lucky and I count my blessings. I don't particularly like exercising, Im more of a foodie.
My grandmother on the other hand eats like a pigeon. She eats salads and vegetables and hardly any carbs. She too used to be skinny and she hates the extra weight and so I think you are definitely right and I love your attitude about it. Society is so flawed.
I was wondering if you had read about the coconut diet. Im very interested in Health, Im doing a heath science degree and I stumbled upon some pages on the net about this diet.
My boss also lost a huge amount of weight on the blood group diet in a very short amount of time, and believe me she is very undisciplined. Another woman I used to work with just cut out wheat and she lost 15kg.
But Im probably rambling, I get excited about diets that seem to work out side of everyones beliefs about fat and the absolute blindness on which people jump into the diets.
Eating is the best way. Its just what you eat, I don't mean salad and veggies all the time. Its so interesting that you could add or subtract one food form a diet and you might have and answer.
I could go on and on. But if you need answers I suggest a Natureopath. Mine saved me from an under-active thyroid which was causing my tiredness.
Thyroids and hormones can have a huge influence on weight especially when you eat right.
    Im gonna stop now.  :P
