A overview of a sexual orientation seminar.
Today i went to a sexual orientation seminar that i just had to share with the world.First i would like to mention that talking about sexual orientation is more then just talking about "sex"it is no different then talking about race or any other diversity , talking about it dose doesn't make you gay or straight anymore then talking about money makes your a millionaire.
at this seminar we went over mainly the basics of sexuality and gender its self, first realizing there is more out there then just gay and straight. there is a lot in between you don't have to be right or left.Sexuality can be thought of as more a fluid concept using the word queer has been seen as hurtful or affective but it can also be a more fluid way of simply saying not straight we dont have to use the sift lables like gay lesbian bisexual ect.
after this we went on to disgue the differnces between gender and sexuality, sexualty being the gender or genders that you feel more attracted to physicly and emotionaly who you prefer to be with and have a realtionship with.Gender is not sex or sexual orentation it is human traits and charitristics the most important thing about gender is to realise that it is created by socity , meaning socity tell a boy how he is suposed to act and show himself for an exapmle; something that would be assocatied with being male might be an interste in toy cars as a young child where a girl would be expected to like playing dress up. Gender is very much seen on how we act, this can be infulanced on how we where raised and what effects us as adults.
after this we talked about the roll of heterosexism, this is the belife that being staright is normal, natural or superior. i will try my best to illistarte what this means, when you wake up in the morning you get dressed and turn on the news to see the weather and trafic report with out knowing it you assume the announcer is straight you leave your house get to work you assume your colleges are straight talk with your boss assume they are straight, after work you go the the store you assume the lady at the cheak out is straight... the list gose on . Avoiding heterosexism is easy its as simple as asking "are you seeing anyone" insted of "do you have a boyfriend" this can save everyone alot of aquward moments.
finaly we talked about comeing out. some say this is the most important time in a queers life how ever if you think about it you dont come out once or even twice you come out meny times, sure comeing out to your family looks differnt then comeing out to your friends or co-workers but its the same idea.
