a popular TV host has a penchant of asking his guest/s a final question: if you were to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?

i was reminded of him because my client just called. this client (a popular and iconic movie actor) was invited to guest in this popular TV host's show and talk about his recently concluded case (which made news). he was asking me to accompany him so i can help explain the legal niceties of the whole thing.

i told him that it would be better if he will appear on TV alone. he said i should give it more thought before saying no.

if i go, and if i'm asked (although most likely not) the same question -- how would you describe yourself in a word -- i wonder what my answer would be.

i have a word in mind but i'd first like to know your answer: how would you describe yourself in one word?

that's the kind of TV soundbite-type of question that makes for interesting television but bad psych, IMHO. esp b/c given that it's a talk show host, that's really intended to be a tactical question anyway: "in one word, what do you want our viewers to think of you?" is really the question being asked, isn't it?

me, if someone stuck a TV camera in my face and asked me that, i'd respond "human". if they persisted, i'd probably respond "bored w/ this question."

my essence or identity is simply not confined within a single word. nobody's is.

    sorry, quid.

that's a fair comment ed. i agree with you that, truly, one's entire being cannot be summarized in one word.

even the word i had in mind -- eclectic -- does not come close to fully defining who i am. but, given the question, i'd probably say -- eclectic. who i really am is a pastiche of so many words.

It is difficult to choose a singular word to describe who I am. An example of this difficulty would be the profiles of our fellow soulcasters. I have not seen one (I may be wrong) who has described themselves by using only one word (although I concede that we were not given that limitation).

For whatever it's worth, let me try to think of one word that would define me, and I will get back to you once I get it.

I actually see the guests of this TV host grapple for that perfect word whenever confronted with the question. Take your time, lab, the question is truly a difficult one.

This does make one pause and ponder....It is quite difficult to come up with just one word. I think my answer would change each day. The first word that came to mind was strong. Then I thought but there are days when I am weak. Then loyal came to mind, but my ex would beg to differ on that one. Real, thoughtful, gentle, sexy, positve,complicated....they all popped into my head. I know, I know....you are screaming...just answer the question.

    Sorry, I can't. :)

To use a single word to describe what cannot be described in one word. It is like a riddle no?

    Here is my answer:

    Undefinable

    Hi, Quid. Umm... Hopeful??

BTW to answer labyrinth's query, I recall that Alcarinque describes herself in one word: Rawr!

I'm not brave enough to ask her why...
  • mydandysunshine3 said on Sep 09, 2006....
My word would have to be "spiritual." But that alone doesn't explain much, since the definition of "spiritual" can be soooo broad. I think it would be better to ask people "what three words would you use to describe yourself?" That way, they won't feel so limited in their choice, and can show you three sides to them instead of just one.

As for me, I'm a Christian, so I define "spiritual" in religious terms.

At first glance, that looked like gibberish to me, schreist. But then I realized that it was the alphabet. That's a pretty good answer, or rather, non-answer!

Earlier I said 'hopeful', but after sleeping on it (as it's now morning here -- good evening??, quid), I have to change it: I think that how I see myself very much depends on what is going on in my life at the time. So, right now I'd have to say 'thankful'.

dear brown_sagittarius, disastergirl, and chingform: I am pleased to note that you are good, crazy, and sensitive (respectively).... ;-)

WhyC: that's very good. I'd like to follow your lead. While I earlier chose the word "eclectic," the more appropriate word for me now is "blessed."

    so says silverwhisper:
"my essence or identity is simply not confined within a single word. nobody's is."

I disagree. (I know. You're shocked.) The one word that describes you, me, and everyone is our name and by this I do not mean the silly 3 part thing you use for legal purposes, and not the one you use casualy. Rather the one "whispered in your ear at birth" that encompasses the whole of you. It is a trixy thing to know. ;)
  • quidnunc said on Sep 10, 2006....
Razulki, perhaps what silver meant is that the essence of who we are cannot be essayed by only one descriptive word. our name, of course, is an entirely different thing.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 10, 2006....
    raz: "trixy! false!" [gollum] :>

that requires that one subscribe to the idea of true names, wouldn't you say? :>

I have to agree with a lot of you, there is not one word that can describe me, it differs from day to day, todays word would probably be happy but tomorrows could be unhappy! it is a very interesting question but there are to many answers!! kind, thoughtful, generous.
