Garden

All right, so this is what I see when I look out of one of my bedroom windows ... our garden.  Of course this is only a small portion of it, but you get the picture.  Can't wait until this stuff is grown and edible!

Wall, Baseboard & Floor                Carpet
Above:  Wall, baseboard, carpet.                        Above:  BLUE carpet

All right, so here's the real purpose of this post.  In the picture where you can see the wall ... it's not that bright aqua looking color, it's actually blue.  Not dull blue, but just blue.  I'm tired of blue.  Everything is gosh damn blue.  Our sheets are light blue, comforter dark blue, pillows are accenting colors of blue.  The walls are blue and the carpet is blue.  Too much blue!  Anybody see Bride Wars?  The part where Kate Hudson screams "MY HAIR IS BLUE!"  I feel like screaming in a very similar way ... 'MY LIFE IS BLUE!'  Also, just to try something different (and there is an ulterior motive that won't be admitted to my dad, since he'll have to do a lot of the work) ... I want to paint our room.  However, I wanted to see if there was any way to paint it some sort of red hue that could match the carpet.

That's where you guys come in ... you can see the pictures, the first showing you the wall now, the baseboard and the carpet and the other picture is of the carpet so you can get a general idea of what it actually looks like. What sorts of red do you think would be OK with that, if any?  I don't want anything glaring ... but a red hue, something warm but nothing shocking and glaring.

Part of the reason for this is just to have something different, and part of it has to do with the fact that, in the spirit of working on mine and my husband's relationship, we want to change our surroundings.  I had read in a couple of places that sometimes too much blue can hinder your sex life.  I'm sure it obviously can hinder your mood else wise as well, but the sex thing is the more important spot here considering we don't spend all of our time in there ... we do have all of our sex in there, lol.  I read that shades of red can encourage physical/mental feelings of that nature.  Since we've had blue for a while and I'm sick of it anyway ... and have been looking for an excuse to get a different colored bed set ... this would be the perfect task.

So, I ask you SCers ... what color do you think would go best with the carpet and baseboards?

I'm thinking make one wall a dark shade or maroon.. and the rest of the walls light-ochre/beige. That'll go well with the grey carpet I think. You could also go in the direction of making one wall a deep rose-red.. and the rest of them baby pink. Somethin like that..

Its not red, but I have always had a thing for lavendar and navy - in case you are trying to match any of your existing blue accessories.

DD - Lol, blue carpet actually but in some places it may just as well be.  That is an interesting color mix.  I had never really considered going with different colors for different walls.  More than likely I'll have to pick just one anyway because my dad will get all bitchy and accuse me of being too much like my aunt (my mom's sister ... and they can't stand one another).  I'll maybe get some color swatches and see what would look best though, thank you!

Wishy - Yeah, I had to get rid of lavendar a while ago, lol.  That was the second time my room got painted.  First it was all white, then I painted the walls lavender, then it went to blue.  Then again, maybe there's another shade that'll work with it if I can't find a suitable red shade.

dark red would be okay... since anything could match grey...

    Queenie - Blue actually, lol.

I don't usually like "colors" for wall color......I think the color is best left to the accessories....here are some pretty good ideas....from the hgtv website.....12 stylish sexy bedrooms....maybe you can get some inspiration there.

Red and blue reminds me of a nautical theme. If you want that, I'd paint the walls white and get the red, white and blue in the sheets, curtains, pillows, lamp shades etc. Personally I wouldn't paint the walls red - I don't care what they say about sex.

Usually bedrooms are painted in 'calm' colours since the majority of your time spent in a bedroom is spent sleeping. The answer to more sex isn't as easy as a paint colour.

If you ignore red = more sex, personally I'd consider painting the walls a milk chocolate brown. Brown and light blue is quite nice and my last bedroom was a milk chocolate brown with cream and it was very soothing.

Enjoy regardless of what colour you pick.

Generally speaking, I agree with d6fer in that the best place to get color is accessories. You can have color on walls throughout a house, but you have to know what you're doing.

In a case where everything is already blue (which I like and is my contrast color), I would want the walls to be more in the line of a comfortable and light earthtone. Too many 'in your face' colors with each other don't reflect comfort to me.

Our bedroom walls and crown molding are two shades of a pleasing green, but furniture, comforter, and carpet are earthtones. The drapes are more of a gold color with a dull red mixed in.

I have to agree with sweetsoul on this one.  I think having red walls of any shade would be disruptive to sleep.  However, the cool thing about color and it's influence is that you don't need to have a lot of it.  A warm honey colors on the walls with some deep blue red pillows, blanket or even a flower arrangement with deep reds would be enough to "keep things lively" in there. ;)

D6 - Thank you, I'm gonna check that out!

Sweet - You know, lol, this is why I put the call out for help because I couldn't find a way out of my box to think of other ideas to incorporate the red beyond painting the walls.  Although, either way, they're getting repainted, lol.  The brown color doesn't sound too bad actually, it would go quite nice with the carpet and the base boards and trim.  I think that's part of why I don't like the blue walls anymore, it's not a soothing blue .. it's an IN YOUR FACE blue.  Thank you for the ideas!

Beyond - I'm learning so much out of this post, lol.  I'm starting to like the idea of some sort of cream color now, the more I read replies.  Cream to brown or something along those lines anyway.  Sounds lke you've got a very comfy home.  I'm just trying to work with what I have, knowing that it's also my dad's house and he'll have some say in it.  Blah to that, lol.

Uni - I guess it is true that you don't need a lot of the color to get it's influence, I hadn't thought of it that way.  See, and the honey coloring ... yeah, I'm liking the idea of creams, browns, etc. more and more now.  I could see it, and it would look nice, and then it would still allow me to accent with reds like you've mentioned.  I've definitely got some thinking to do now.

I think you could start with some new sheets that have lots of color.  Something with a bold, colorful geometric pattern or floral design.  Then from those sheets pick out some decorator pillows to put on the bed that match those colors.  Then find a wall hanging with those bright colors to pull it all together.

(I think I read somewhere once that orange is the color of the energy chakra regarding sexuality.)

Well, if it was my room, and I had to keep the blue carpet, I think I would paint the walls a pale cafe color, add a red patterned area rug, and use a bed cover with red in it too. Matching the area rug. Add cafe colored curtains. Maybe a silk look to make it rich. Just to make sure all the colors blend together I would pick out the area rug and work from there.

    Have fun!

  • Hegemone said on Jun 10, 2009....
CW - You know that would be awesome to do.  I always loved the idea of decorator pillows, just never had any.  Oh, maybe I could also find a wall hanging having something to do with horses AND pulling the colors together?  This could be a fun search, lol!

Woman - Hmmm, good ideas too.  Just gotta see if I can find a good area rug that won't be a pain in the arse to clean what with all the cat hair.  Lol, that's another reason I have to be choosy with what I get, else there's no point in getting something really nice if it's going to be covered in cat hair and who knows what else!

CW, If the carpet was a neutral, I would be all for red walls but I think it will be too much of a conflict.  Possible to pull it off but it will be tough.  My vote would be paint the walls a neutral (maybe even a medium beige and trim in a lighter color of the same) and accent the rooms in the colors you want that will work with the carpet.

You don't have hardwood underneath the carpet do you?  If so, pull it up and paint the walls however.
  • Hegemone said on Jun 10, 2009....
Fearing - Thank you for the ideas.  Yes, beige, tan, cream, brown ... that seems to be the direction I'm heading, and of course accents.  Can't believe I hadn't properly thought of how much the accents can really pull it together!  Unfortunately there isn't hard wood under the carpet, so I have to make do, lol.
  • Lucytorial said on Jun 10, 2009....
You know, a very light buttery yellow would look nice on those walls, not too dark a yellow, needs to be light and bright so that the carpet doesn't look too dark.
  • fearing said on Jun 10, 2009....
Lol!  I called you "CW" by accident!  ha ha!  And it's too early to be drinking so must just be the blonde in me!
    Sorry!
  • Hegemone said on Jun 10, 2009....
Lucy - Hmm, you're right, that might look pretty darned neat.  See I'm liking all of these yellow, cream, beige, tan, brown colors because we're smokers too so it won't show up so badly.  Definitely getting paint swatches this weekend!

Fearing - It's all good, lol, I knew who you meant.  She was just a couple of comments up, and in my comment right above yours anyway, it was bound to happen.
  • Lucytorial said on Jun 10, 2009....
If your house is not large I mean that it isn't open then a light colour will open it up.  Make it seem bigger and brighter.

Yellow tones are also intelligent tones, the colour of the mind, very good to be around yellow - could help some ofthe dip shit ignorants that you tend to have to deal with. LOL
  • Hegemone said on Jun 10, 2009....
Lucy - You know, you bring up a very good point, lmao.  Maybe I will just go with a yellow and ward off some of those 'ignorant vibes'.  It could use some opening up also.  Hmmm ... can't wait til my husband asks 'WHY yellow?'  LMAO.

    Hege,
Pillows are really easy to make.  You could create your very own look from any kind of fabric you choose...new or vintage.

Gracie - Lol ... beware ... I might throw blue paint at you!  I think there's a whole 'nother five gallon bucket somewhere around here!

CW - Hmmm ... I coouuuuld, lol .... or I could ask my friend to do it since she sews WAY more than I do.  As long as I'm buying the supplies I'm sure she wouldn't mind.  I'd make it worth her while via some good cooking of some type, or something.   I'm the 'occassional patch in the jeans' kinda girl ... everything else winds up loose, wrinkled or just plain messed up so far, lol.  I did not aquire those crafting skills, that's why I admire them so insanely much.
