There was once a time when you glanced at a car and knew what it was, in many cases saw a work of art.

That time is long gone. Now and for the last few years I've had to walk up to most cars and read the name on them to know what they are. It started with the aerodynamics of the Ford Taurus.

Don't get me wrong, there's some great looking cars out there, but what a difference to having the streets filled with these.

What you need to do is email that link to GM to remind them of how gorgeous their cars used to look...might as well email Ford and Chrysler too while your at it! That's it; I'm subscribing to you because I like the topics you write about.

What you say is definitely true, things have changed and are continuing to do so.  It's interesting how once upon a time having a car in the first place was a luxury and something about town to talk about.  Now it depends on what type of car you have, if you can even tell what it is.  Beyond that, some of the newer cars are just hideous in design anyway ... they don't have much that stands out about them, they're so ... uniform sometimes, in a way.

BeyBey....oh, i would love to drive around with one of this beauty.......:-)

    I would feel so glah-mouros.....dahling....

What you say is true, it felt like a different world due to cars alone. This country was the God of the car, a part of our culture not living with us today in the same way.

zeva- You are very welcome here, glad to have you aboard. I only wish they would make cars like that again. I was telling someone the other day I'd like to have a new '57 Chevy. The '57 Chrysler 300 isn't bad either.

hege- Some of the new ones in the last few years have been hideous. Have you seen the new one called the "Cube"?

ginsoul- Oh, I love that. Glamorous no doubt. The link in this post says at the bottom 'more to come'. Perhaps they will have some of the older ones like you showed.

The Cube ... I make puking references every time I see one, lol.
  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 07, 2009....
hege- Ready to make a puking reference? The Cube.

    Here it is.

All in the world I want is a 1957 Chevrolet BelAir convertible.  Better than sex.  Well, let's not get carried away...

The Cube...  Whoever designed that ought to be smacked.  Repeatedly.
  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 07, 2009....
mimi- No, a '57 Chevy convertible is better than sex. You're right, let's not get carried away. Isn't the Cube lovely?
  • MissMimi said on Jun 07, 2009....
This one is just as bad.  <shudder>
  • scipio said on Jun 08, 2009....
Excellent pics. These days it will be so expensive to drive these cars and where & how will you park.
  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 08, 2009....
mimi- When I married my wife, my step-father had an International Travelall which looks similar but more boxy than the one you showed. She still talks about how ugly that car was.

scipio- I have a friend who bought a beautiful and original '54 Chevy. He had a garage built for it. He drives it some Sunday afternoons.

I never cared much for cars, but there is one I want to own to this day.

It's a big, practical and beautiful car; Hummer H1

you bought an edsil? BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! (quote from peggy sue got married)

unfortunately, european styling took over in the 90's, so cars were about efficiency and not aesthetics. nowadays, there's so little difference between cars that price is really the determining factor i think. i don't know, back in the 50's we had mcarthyism, segregation and great automobile styling. nowadays you gotta spend big bucks to trick your ride and make it look distinctive, and even then it looks more like plastic jewelry pasted on a mud vase. i'm afraid that until there's an efficient, renewable energy source to replace fosil fuels, individual styling will be a thing of the past.

I hate with all my gut THOSE monsters...;-p

I'll take a 58 chev convertible please... god I know what you mean.  Cars these days have about as much personality as dry dog shit.

Brings back memories for me, too.  My mom had an old Chevy--maybe a 56 like that one.  And a Mercury Comet that I had forgotten about until I saw the picture.

We had an old black buick, also--the first car she learned to drive.  I used to stand up in the back, terrified.  She ran into the well house and porch on one of those return trips.

    Nice post and memory jogger!

voltaire- Man, I see a lot of those out here. And mostly women driving them. Who would've thought?

trav- You're probably right about styling being a thing of the past. Too bad. "Plastic jewelry pasted on a mud vase", I like that.

ginsoul- I'm not kidding, those 'things' are really popular out here. And they use them to drive to walmart.

lucy- I love British sports cars. All of them. I bet the price of the older ones is through the roof. I wouldn't mind seeing yours when you get a pic.

wombat- When growing up my parents had a couple of the ugly ones, I'm not even going to tell what they were. One looked like an upside down bathtub.
  • wombat said on Jun 08, 2009....

When I was in Germany with my ex back in the day of the fall of the Berlin Wall, we saw these dandies all over the place.  They built them as a means of transportation across the newly opened border.  When they broke down or ran out of gas, they were abandoned along the autobahn.  I once saw a picture of one in a dumpster published in the newspaper!  I thought they were cool....when you gotta go, you gotta go!

They are called "Trabants" or "trabies" for short.

    trabant

Just wanted to throw this in the mix........

  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 08, 2009....
wombat- I think I could have designed something better drawing with my left hand.

    Blindfolded.
  • Voltaire said on Jun 09, 2009....
    Ginger,
    If you want to, sure.
    I love 'em.

And FYI I live in the country, and I won't ask for your permission either. ;-P

    Beybey......i know! ....here too....

Must be that in Texas everything is bigger, rigth?...lol..

Man, one must feel like driving in the Kilimanjaro savana when they go shopping for baby diapers at Wal Mart.

I guess women feel safer on top of those inflated things? More powerful? Bah...
I guess its just another enhancement they buy just like their fake boobs and their fake tans and their supersized gallons of Coke they buy at McDonald.

    Voltaire..... bad, bad boy......lol...
  • Voltaire said on Jun 09, 2009....
    Ginger,
    Bla, bla, bla... ;-D
  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 09, 2009....
ginsoul- Must be their penis envy. In Hummers, they can strap their bodies in a man-thing.
  • Voltaire said on Jun 09, 2009....
    Beyond,
    Hahahah! Hilarious.
  • gingersoul said on Jun 09, 2009....
     BeyBey.......you are so right......LOL....

And what about the men who likes Hummers then? Is it a subliminal gay thing?....Nothing wrong in case, as long as the men are aware of it......LOL.....

They say that shorter (or smaller) the guy bigger the car....

    Voltie......uh oh....LOL..
  • Voltaire said on Jun 10, 2009....
    Ginger,
Men who like hummers? Nothing wierd there, it's to get the females maybe?
I mean if it's so popular among the ladies it would be easier for single men to get a lady if they have a Hummer no?

    Wierd logic.. lol..

And no I never measured my little friend so I can not comment on that guy vs car thing.
    ;-P
