The reason I ask is because I'm reading a book called The Idiots Guide to Getting Your Romance Published. I haven't read very many romance novels, mainly because the ending is supposed to be 'And they got married and lived happily ever after." That's a goal I just cannot relate too, and not just because I'm old and cynical. I've pretty much always been this way.
So why am I reading such a book, you might ask? Because my novel writing of choice is epic fantasy adventures, and they always have at least one and sometimes many romantic relationships going on at the same time. So I started asking people if they read Romance Novels. I am guessing many people do and won't admit to it. Others were more than happy to list their favorite lines of novels. Others just huffed and said they were a complete waste of time.

When my friend moved I helped her dust her collection of literally hundreds of romance novels. She gave me a few boxes full. I only read maybe four of them and then went back to other more preferred reading.

So, have you read them, and if so, which lines are your favorites? Have you written any? Had any published? Have any opionion about them at all?

Yes I have read a few of them. I read them for a similar if not identical purpose to you own. I felt that reading from something outside of my known genre would improve my writing in other places. To that end it has done a decent job, I'm considering picking up another soon but I haven't read enough of them to really give you and advice. I'm just a guy who can step out and say yeah I've been there and done that.

Oh wait I do have two excuses I was in Iraq at the time and I'd already read every single Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Magazine, murder mystery (normally outside my realm) and Tom Clancy (gods that man writes dry) so as the glue was melting on the last of my Lord of the Rings books (reading speed is of the utmost importance in 120+ degree tempratures. Books weren't designed for that) I broke down and read romance.

I'm hoping to find one that is set in a fantasy setting though as that may help me and you more than standard female wank material which is largely what it is.

I used to read them; and just from perusing the descriptions of some recently published ones in a few literary magazines, not all of them end with marriage and happily ever after.

Yes, I do and discovered romance books when I was much younger. And one author that has had me particularly hooked is NORA ROBERTS. She started 20 years ago and isn't showing signs of stopping any time soon. You'd be surprised at how many fans she has (over 120 million books sold) because she has a way of telling a good story.

She has since evolved into a mystery/suspense/romance (even sci-fi as J.D. Robb) writer, and has not lost her touch even while exploring other genres.

She still pretty much resolves everything with a "happily ever after" note but the getting to that part is very realistic. Her characters are memorable and her dialogue witty, biting, and evokes a lot of emotion.

You can probably try out some of her work as she comes out with about 6 books every year.

Sorry, I'm not much a fan of mushy romance novels. :) but since I'm a girl and I've an excuse, so..rarely. lol!

Thanks everyone. I've been asking around and Nora Roberts name comes up time and time again. I guess that's where I'll start...why not start with the best?

Who knew Iraq could melt books? I guess that's a good excuse to take a speed reading course.

In my blog, I wrote about a good on paper guy. I like his personality and he is a nice guy, but like I said the chemistry is not there....
Me and my friend was talking about romance and whether it still alive. So Soulcast do you believe that romance still exsists....
As I currently am. It's been a long time since anyone was on the cards with the potential physical strength to do me the kind of harm I want, or an apparent interest in inflicting it.
