"Let us stipulate, as the lawyers like to say, that horses should not be slaughtered for human consumption."

This is weird for many reasons. Let me start by saying that I'm a vegetarian, but I don't want to force my views on others (I wish most christians felt the same). Why the special treatment for horses? How are they fundamentally different from cows? Is this really what the House should be spending its time on? There are far too many questions that could be asked on this one!

Not to be freaky, but my hubby works at a vet's warehouse and a lot of the horse medications say "not for use with equines used for human consumption"

The fundamental difference is that we love them and have come to view them as companions not food. It would surprise me if similar laws haven't already been passed to protect dogs and cats. Its one of those touchy feely have nothing to do with reality things I'm just explaining the reason. Its the same reason why its easier to gather funding to protect dolphins than great whites or Llamas but not hyenas. Being cute counts for SO much it doesn't even make sense.

And not just in the animal world either!

I agree with banning the slaughter of animals. There is no justification of animal rights abuses in the United States. In Canada, there are ongoing attempts to keep up the slaughter of seals during the mass hunt every year, but that may be changing. That is a good thing for our image. Many European countries support a ban on the import of slaughtered seal fur, meat and byproducts. There is a need to place animal rights on the agenda through education, awareness programs, speaking out, the press, the Internet and peaceful protest.

yeah... I'm going to have to say that, first of all, I have to agree that congress probably has more pressing things to work on than telling people not to do things that most people wouldn't do short of desperation. - at least most people in the US, where horses are more pets than food... Other countries have different standards of what qualifies as food.

Secondly, there are animal rights laws in effect in most places in the US. Generally eating dogs and cats is frowned upon by John Law. though in certain parts of Mexico...

Thirdly, I find it sad that legislaters seem more concerned with passing a quantity of bills so that they can look like they are doing something. Rahter than passing effective bills.... I would rather see congress pass 20 bills that actually did something usefull, than 1,000 bills that don't.

not to mention horse meat is a bit gamey, but with enough barby-Q sauce and jalepenios you hardly notice... j/k, honest!
