Yeah they are pretty good, I laugh when I hear about these guys because when I was little I used to always get the Monkees and the Beatles mixed up.

The music in this country has deterioated like all qualities of life have in this country, especially music. But the Monkeys are better than most of what you hear today, at least they carry somewhat of a melody. Most of the music created today is nothing more the various forms of noise. I go to the fitness center only to be captured in a noise tunnel, playing all of the songs I never wanted to hear. All modern music does is injure the ears. For the sake of saving your hearing, shut off the noise, or whatever they call music today.

I used to be nutso about Davy!  I was about 12 when they were first around.  I used to ride my bicycle to the store and buy bubble gum attatched to a few cards like baseball cards.  They had different pictures and maybe some info on each card about each Monkey.  They had a tv show, too.  I had forgotten about that until just now!

    Thanks for posting the tunes!

The Monkees were created by TV producers to ride The Beatles' wave of success. Two of them weren't even musicians when they started the series. The drummer had been a child actor on a TV series called "Circus Boy."

They have 3 or 4 memorable songs that I still hum today, but they were absoultely nothing like The Beatles (musicians who wrote their own songs) and the sound is only similar if you are talking about recording technology of the time. The Monkees had nothing like George Harrison for lead guitar.

The Monkees were made by committee, The Beatles came out of reality and then were taken over by committee (and Yoko). The Monkees could never have done Sgt. Pepper or Yellow Submarine or The White Album.

You should see the movies Help! and A Hard Day's Night for some fun times.

I used to watch reruns of their shows when I was a kid. I actually always liked them but never bought any of their CDs. I might have to do something about that. I think their music would be fun to listen to with  MiniHot in the car.

As for why they don't make music like this anymore... I could ask that about a lot of older music. But somethings are best left as classics instead of driven into the ground with recycling.

the monkees were a creation of the television production company screen gems and columbia records. they were put together for their television show, and weren't allowed to play the music in their first season or their first 2 albums, and all of those songs were written by other people. peter tork quit in 1969, and that was the end of the band. mike nesmith left in 1970, and in 1971, mickey dolenz and davey jones lost the rights to continue using the monkees name. wikipedia has a good article on the band should you care to read it.
  • travelr712 said on Jun 05, 2009....
interestingly enough, it was the beatles' film 'a hard day's night' that inspired the original developers to create the series about the fictional group.

"Cool" was just becomming into fashion then.  I grew up on "I Love Lucy."  When we got long-haired guys and girls going ga-ga over them.....well.......a new generation of living was born.

We women jumped onto looking at the opposite sex as fun. (not just as a partner in domestics)

Well, that's how I see it.

(Lucy got spanked by Ricky, and not in a good way)

  • queenparanoia said on Jun 05, 2009....
wombat: we still do that in my generation wombie.... i mean look at the jonas brothers!!!! lol... ;-)
  • wombat said on Jun 05, 2009....

People of my generation do not look at the "jonas brothers."

    We just look back.

But the only thing about change is that it never changes.

    Blog (and rock) on!!!!!!!!

Good music :)   I'm absolutely obsessed with the entire 60's generation, like the whole counter-culture thing.   I live by Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon :P   I've only heard two Monkees songs, the hits, but they are awesome.  Music should be more about emotion like it was back then.

    Here we come
    Walkin' down the street
We get the funniest looks from
    Everyone we meet
    Hey hey we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
    But we're too busy singin'
    To put anybody down....

I would have loved to hear The Beatles cover Daydream Believer - it would be so punchier!!!!!

OK. I ordered a 4-CD set of Monkees music. All the songs I could remember are on there plus tons of stuff I probably never heard watching the TV show. I think I'll make a CD mix of the best driving songs for MiniHot. I wonder if he'll like Aunty Grazelda...?
  • queenparanoia said on Jun 09, 2009....
    hotaka: i'm sure he'll like it... ;-)

Last night I read the Wikipedia article about the Monkees. It was very interesting. In a nutshell, the Monkees as they were intended to be failed - they became a real band. But the troubles they endured. The cuteness of the TV show belies the truth. The music should be interesting.
