I hate when I know that I'm going to have a busy day that my stoopid eyelids will pop right open at dark oclock and refuse to close until I'm dragging ass late that night.  But here I am, awake hours before any store will be open (including the coffee store).

I did learn something about packing a suitcase that I can share with you all.  Shoes take up a lot of space.

I know, not earth shattering news.  I'll bet some of you already know that.  But it became a problem for me last night.  Miss Smarty Pants here decided that she was going to avoid the whole checked in luggage issue by taking a carry on and her new big purse.  The problem I had then was trying to pare down what I'm bringing to actually fit in said carry on.

Damn it!  I need every piece of clothing I own to fit in a very small suitcase!  I finally settled for black and brown sandals, black heels, flip flops and tennies.  If I need more shoes I'll have to buy them.  Then I put some other clothes in there.  I'm going to need to stop at a drug store when I land for those liquid toiletries you can bring with you anymore .... and perhaps something for muscle aches that I'm gonna get hauling this thing around.

I hope I don't hurt my back strong arming that sucker into the overhead compartment.  Better yet, I hope no one gets hurt when I take it back out!  If ever I'm in a street fight I hope I have that loaded carry on with me.  It's better than a pair of brass knuckles.

Now, it's only a matter of time before Starbucks opens and I can get that cup of coffee that I need.

unique- If you're talking about the roller carry on, try boots sometime. What I have found is buy the carry on with the zippered expandable top. When you look at the room you'll have, that expandable top makes all the difference.

BTV - the one I have now only has a small expandable zip.  If I find myself traveling more I'll have to look into that.  I can't imagine boots!  though maybe I should since I have 1/2 a mind to buy a pair this weekend.

Uni, lol, you sure are somethin' else.  You can make the simplest of things exciting and action packed for sure!  Glad you finally got it figured out, and at least we don't need to worry about anybody trying to come at you ... you can beat them with your carry on!  Also I know you said you couldn't really discuss where you're going, and that's fine ... but damn it sounds like you're packing to be gone for weeks instead of a weekend, lol.

I am totally sympathetic! You poor thing, you probably are worried to death that you don't have enough clothes. I try to get by with one carry on whenever I can but there are the two problems you mentioned. Liquids and room.

    Have a fabulous time.

The way I see it, you got too many shoes in that bag.. damn it girl don't you know you won't need em? you'll prolly wear one pair all weekend! LOL

Agreeing with Lucy. 5 pairs of shoes for a weekend is too many...and that's from a lover of shoes and travel.

I'll share with you a trick of mine for helping out in such situations. Never bring clothes that require both black and brown shoes. Pick clothes that will go with brown shoes or black shoes. That cuts your need in half.  My most important pair of shoes is a good walking shoe and I wear them. This time of year, I'd pack a cute strappy sandal with a small heel and make that do both casual and dressy detail.

I'm off shortly for a week vacation and I'll probably only pack 1 pair of shoes.

The other advantage of not taking very many shoes is that it leaves room in the suitcase if you buy more there...which I've been known to do as well. :)

Hope you have a great trip.

With airlines starting to charge extra for each piece of baggage, the whole world is having to learn to pare down when traveling, I guess.  But I'd have the same problem matching up shoes for different outfits.  At least in summer you can maybe get by with white slings and sandles for anything--unless you plan to go hiking.  Well, in that case wear the sneakers on the plane!

Wherever you are going, have a great trip and bring back pics, maybe? The only places I get to go are in my mind with all of you wanderers.

Uni I know what you mean, when I am going on a trip it's almost impossible for me to sleep, have fun.

Tell me about it....I'm thinking about going back to South America for a 2week visit and taking only a carry on because I afraid of losing something when I take a connecting flight.   I'm going to have to fit everything I need into one carry on and maybe a backpack.
    Not going to be easy.
