"Liar Liar Pants on fire"

why do people lie? I don't think that they can
help themselves.

I have a friend that i have caught in so many lies
that you don't know if she is lying or telling the truth.

I think that this is a bad habit to have. We all
tell little white lies sometimes for various reasons but to do it on an ongoing
basis is not good.

Do you have any friends like this?

Pathological liars are the worst, and they legitimately can not help it.  It's instinct to them or something.  I do have a few friends that are like this, and it's worse when they forget who they've spun what lie to.  I try not to lie and generally the closest I get is the omission of the truth.  So instead of fabricating another story, I just don't tell any story.  I don't like doing it and I only save those tactics for extreme measures or if the timing isn't quite right.

My FIL is a liar.  So is my BIL.  My MIL is the queen of white lies.  I don't understand it.  I know in my MIL's case, she thinks all is right if she goes to confession.  Many times they lie over such inconsequential things.  I wonder if they believe their own lies.

It makes me take everything they say with a grain of salt.

Hege it is sad when you lie so much that you can't remember what lie you told to who.

CW, I have a SIL like that to, they just can't seem to help themselves.

Wolf LOL make your mind up, it is hard to overlook it.

i find quite often people just don't want to know the truth, because it won't go with what they want their situation to be. a wife says 'am i fat? do you like the meatloaf? how's my hair?' you better lie. believe me, no matter how diplomatically you answer those questions, they're not going to want the truth. you just can't always tell the truth, no matter how much you might want to.

my grandmother was a liar.  But in her case I think everyone knew that she just liked making the truth more interesting ;)  I have known liars.  I hate that you can't trust anything they say because you know that everything is suspect.  It's a sore point with me.

I just saw the movie "not meant for me" there was a lady that had forgiven her husband for cheating on her but kicked his ass out because he lied about smoking again. All men are lier's but it's because we don't want to hurt anyone........wait fuk I'm lying again.....shit I can't be trusted................~WOLF~

my ex-husband would often weave himself into big lies :( sometimes over really stupid things, i never understood...

  • wombat said on Jun 03, 2009....

I have a relative that does this on a daily and constant basis.  It's often more of what you would call "embellishing."  If she had vanilla ice cream and went to the store for eggs---her story would be that she had a new kind of ice cream on the market and saw a bad wreck involving a truck load of live chickens.

You just never know what to believe, so no one believes anything she says at all.  But I guess it's for attention and to try to feel important.

    i lie sometimes.

I do if it means i will get something i very much want and know that i deserve but that i wouldn't get if it meant i told the absolute truth. but i always cross my fingers behind my back while i tell the lie and then it doesn't count. there i said it. hehe

i actually think most neuro-typical human's lie, but it's extremely anti-social to admit to lying/fibbing? so they do the "im such an honest person thing" and point the finger and say oh i have a friend who lies bla bla bla.... total projection!!!!!!!! and overlook their own transgressions.

ok here's one. Just say for example, your best friend has a bit of a weight problem and talks to you about their outfit. betcha most of you would try to make her/him feel good and say "ohhhhhh sweetie, no no you look amazing in that" when quite obviously their arse looks like a frigging mack truck in skinny jeans.

do you get what im saying? THAT is a lie. a blatant lie. Saying something isn't how it really is, is a lie.

we do it all the time.

    love phoeby

There are soooooooo many reasons. To make something sound spicier. To evade blame. To cause blame. To get money. To hide money.....yipes, so very many reasons......I know people who tell little lies so much that they don;t even realize they're doing it anymore. They think of it as enhancement.....>>>>>>>>>>

I prefer to call it "not revealing the whole truth". I sometimes have to do this to avoid being in trouble. In my mind I did nothing wrong but in another person's mind I might be in the wrong. This is especially true when the other person takes the truth and twists it around to create a fantasy in which you are definitely wrong. (Not my wife)

i would rather live in a life full of misery and honesty. than live comfortably because of lies...

Trav you are right some people don't  want to know the truth in situations like that.
who is to tell someone that they look fat? not me.

Uni it is also a sore point for me, you can't believe anything they say.
  • MsStar39 said on Jun 03, 2009....
Wolf  all men are liers, that's funny. I can understand not wanting to hurt a persons feeling.

Fraggles That is what get on my nerves, them lying over small things not worth telling a lie over.

Wombat I have a son in law like that, can't believe a word he says, it's like they can't help themselves.

  • MsStar39 said on Jun 03, 2009....
Pheoby i think that we all lie sometime. I like the statement you said about
you do if it means you will get something you very much want and know that you deserve but that you wouldn't get if it meant you told the absolute truth.

The funny part, but i always cross my fingers behind my back while i tell the lie and then it doesn't count.

StoneMaster you gave all the good reasons why people lie, some just do it more then others and just to enhance what they are saying.
  • MsStar39 said on Jun 03, 2009....
Hotaka, sometimes it is in our best interest not to reveal the whole truth.

Queen well said, they just can't seem to help them selves.

To lie or not to lie - that is the big question . Oh what a tangled web we weave when we lie .....Everybody at some point in their lives have lied to get by. That is the truth and nothing but the truth.

  • scipio said on Jun 04, 2009....
By the way, the correct spelling of "lier"  is " Liar " and that is the truth.
  • MsStar39 said on Jun 04, 2009....
Scipio We have all lied, thanks I knew  something was wrong, I have got to stop writing when I am sleepy.

    Tell one lie.

Cover it with two, like a cat covering crap; ad infinatum.

I had an old mentor tell me: "The most sophisticated liar is he who doesn't say anything."

Whoa! I really like that one!
