This afternoon I was able to grab the elevator to the other floor just as it was about to go up.  One of the building's maintenance people was in there.  I think he was a little nervous about sharing the ride with me.  I cracked a small joke about timing and how I'd been waiting all day to catch the elevator.

After a small nervous pause, he asked "So how is it in paradise today?"

Huh?  I honestly had no clue what he was talking about.  Then it occurred to me that he might be talking about the state we live in. (not all of the workers are local)  So I asked him if he meant here in California.

No, he meant here at my company.

I was a little gob stopped.  He thought that working for this company was like paradise?!

I must have looked as surprised as I felt because he felt compelled to explain himself.  He said that the people who worked here always seemed to be cheerful and having a good day.

Well I'll be!!!

This got me to thinking.  How often are we the ones looking in and how often are we the ones on the inside with no clue as to what little bit of paradise we really have?  I can definately say that I've had jobs that were worse.  From where he stands what I have seems much better than what he has.

I know I say this all the time, but I do love my job.  It is a slice of paradise most days.  Have I finally grown up enough emotionally to appreciate what I have?  I'm going to have to remember this little interaction next time I have one of "those" days. :)

hot diggity damn uni! you do have a great job don't you?! it's really nice when something happens to help us appreciate what we got :) but, really, come on....you? grown up?  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  ;)

Don't grow up Uni - some of the best gratitude and joy for simple pleasures comes from kids - just think about kids that get this wonderful present and then have just as much fun (maybe more) playing with the box that it came in!

Sometimes we become immune to our everyday blessings - glad you had this little reminder - Wishy

ah, yes, just one small remark can turn what we may see into something totally different at any given time........ one mans/womans trash is anothers treasure so to speak.  I am glad you like your job, that makes it so much easier to take.  I just like that fact that I still HAVE a job at this point in time.  but I agreee with wishy, you don't have to grow up.  BTW, did you do that photo assignment yet????

U-I, That's a great reminder for all of us.  I have to say, most days, I know my preschool job is paradise.  We have a ball!  It's not that I enjoy children so much that I thing there is no better thing to do but goodness, they are entertaining.  I also work with a great friend who keeps me laughing to near hysterics all the time.  It's just the two of us and the kids and we teach what we want and how we want, make the schedules etc....  The downside is we don't make a lot of money but when you enjoy work that much?  Money ain't everything.

frags - yeah, the grown up thing was a reach ;)  I do think I might not have appreciated this job even 10 years ago.

wishy - well, if I don't have to grow up to appreciate my life I'd be okay with staying a kid.  I'm glad I got this reminder too :)

quiet -  sometimes just having a job is our slice of paradise, but yes, I do appreciate what I have.  As for the assignment, I have figured out how I want to make the photo, but I'm still scouting for the right elements. ;)

That's really something to think about.  I'll bet that was a nice revelation.  :-)  I liked what Wishy said about not growing up though.  I wish I still saw the world through wide innocent eyes.

CW - I'm not sure I'm that innocent anymore either, but the reminder of how my life compares to others was very nice.

Uni, that's a really neat experience you had.  It does put things into perspective.  We might have days that we're miserable and don't stop to realize it might not be so bad, and then you might have awesome days and think nothing of it when there are others out there who just wish they could get one week in your shoes.  Definitely something to make you think and appreciating what you have is always a good thing to think about.

i really connect to something that quietone said. i'm so glad i still have a job at this point. and that i don't have something seriously wrong with me. i can see somebody saying i'm in paradise now, just living in america and not being poor or threatened or ill. we never appreciate what we have, no? we're always waiting for something else to make it all better.

What a nice compliment, the grass always look greener on the other side.
  • hotaka said on Jun 03, 2009....
Well, if life was good always we would never appreciate it as much as we do when we have those off days. The off days are there to remind us that we generally have it good. Of course, some people have more off days than good. Some people's whole lives seem to be off. For some people life is almost a living Hell.

Yes, be thankful for all that's good. Cheers!

Hege - I was glad for the little reminder :)

queenie - having a good boss is a big step towards having a job that's paradise.

GL - I agree, we often don't appreciate that we have the basics.

MsStar - normally I'd agree with you about the grass, but in the case of my job I really think that I do appreciate it.

hotaka - an off day really is the best reminder of the good in our lives.

with so many unemployed (10% they say ....or darn close) and you live in a state that's even worse.....i think if you have a decent job, that's really something to be thankful for.

i bitch and i moan about the long hours, crappy mgmt, politics, etc of where i work, but at the end of the day, i do love the people i work with, am good at doing the job, and the salary is better than i could make anywhere else.

lol...although paradise might be pushing it!

  • uniquely-ironic said on Jun 03, 2009....
SL - you could be describing my job and my attitude about it.  I'm not sure it's paradise either, but I'd bet it would look that way to someone with a crappy job or no job at all.
