i do not know if this question was already asked here in SC but, really, how do you express yourself "musically"?

do you sing solo, or just chime in with a group? do you beat the desk, or actually play a drum or a bongo? do you gesture like you're playing a guitar, or do you actually play one? what musical instrument do you play, if any?

in my case, it's been the guitar all my life. there have been secondary instruments, though. first, the saxophone. it was in high school and later in the military academy (before going to law school) where i learned how to play the saxophone (it was more of a co-curricular requirement - for the brass band). then, the keyboards. it was later in law school when i began tinkering with the keyboards. i'm fairly good at the latter now, although i still use the guitar in composing songs.

now it's your turn. what is your form of musical expression?

"knew" some piano? do you still play ed?

one of my frustration was not having to learn piano when i was younger. at least i do a little keyboard now.

lab: you should sing solo once in a while... :-)

not in years and i was never very good at it. trust me, the past tense applies.

I wish I could play an instrument. I keep saying I'd like to take piano lessons, since we have a piano and nobody plays it. But quite frankly, I'm not ready to make the time commitment necessary to make it productive.

So once again, I'll live through my kids. One plays drums, one plays guitar, the third one plays flute and piccolo.
  • quidnunc said on Sep 07, 2006....
silver, i hope you'll find time to go back to playing the piano. it's therapeutic, they say. but who needs the piano when you have lots of writing/blogging to do? :>
  • quidnunc said on Sep 07, 2006....
scalywag: i guess most parents like us live through their kids. since my frustration is not learning the piano as a kid, it's my daughter who is at it now. she's into ballet too -- and maybe the latter is my wife's frustration.

    thanks for dropping by.

I've been playing the piano since I was 10 :) I've had the profession of teaching music to kids for a time, and it was great fun! I love music. It's my life. :)

amanhecer: a man of music! glad to bump into you here.
thank you for relaying and sharing your passion.

I play piano. I have always been able to play somewhat by ear, although I did take lessons for two years as a pre-teen. My piano teacher told me the only thing that saved me from true greatness was the length of my fingers.

I have very small hands. I have to strain to stretch my hand an octave. So, sometimes, I have to re-write the music to adapt.

Currently, I am teaching myself the original score of Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata'.

I have made up a few of my own pieces, but I am not skilled enough with 'theory' to write them down.
  • scalywag said on Sep 07, 2006....
quidnunc.....uh, yeah, that's why we have a piano in our house. our oldest wanted to play piano. We bought a piano and he took lessons for 1 year, then wanted to quit. he's away at college now, we still have the piano.

A couple years later he wanted to take up drums. We got him the basic snare drum, but when he wanted an entire set, we told him that he would have to pay for it, and if he was still playing and interested after a year, we'd pay him back, which we ended up doing.

This is reminding me to get that thing out of here.
  • quidnunc said on Sep 07, 2006....
I wish I could actually hear you play, Jade.

    Hi

Me I have been playing the piano since I was 5 years old. In my family it was a must, not that my parents forced us to play but weall had to take one year a music then you could decide if you wanted to continue or not.

I have never stopped , I now play the bass guitar . the piano, keyboard, also played the violin for 4 years that was years ago.

I have a band, we did our share of club performing. we haven't played live i n while now. mostly because most of us live in different state. I still write songs, I play the piano almost everyday .

I have a 15 year old son who is now into learning music, he has been taking piano lesson for w years now. But he is leading more toward producing music. I am doing my best to push him, and I do my best to give him all the opportunity .

Music is my escape from the world, it takes me away from my problem. I find solutions to my problem when I play the piano, it helps clear my mind.......

Trust my guys playing an instrument is very therapeutic , and its never to late to learn......

    nada...how i wish i could...my brother knows how to
handle the major musical instruments: acoustic and
electric guitar, drums, bass guitar, and a little of the
keyboard, too. and he sings pretty well...and im left
    with negative value musical talent.
  • boyzmom said on Sep 07, 2006....
I wish I had my grandfather's talent but I tried the clarinet for a few years and never got good at it, I blame it on my asthma. Then I tried to sing, no talent there, but I believe with practice I learned to keep in tune. I love music but maybe it doesn't love me.

Before I could play the acoustic guitar, I was an outstanding air guitar player!...just like satyr

When I was in school, I could play the recorder and I could play many famous TV theme songs using the recorder.

I would play the recorder all day and at the end of the day, the inside lining of my recorder would be filled with my saliva. Yuck! Also, I could remember my saliva would drip from the other end of the recorder while I'm still blowing the recorder.. LOL! Gross!

Today, I've forgotten all the chords for my recorder.
Instead, I could play the acoustic guitar right now. I hope I could pick up an electric guitar some time in the future.
  • scalywag said on Sep 07, 2006....
I play my slide trombone.....probably more often than I should, but less often than it would like.

***SC puts a marginal note across Z's name: "or back-up singer"***
  • quidnunc said on Sep 07, 2006....
Bluesnake: Do you play the soprano recorder? I played that too when I was in high school. The instrumental part of the song "Speechless" was my inspiration for picking up the recorder. But I always made sure my saliva was on check when I used it, so no dripping for me... hahaha! :-)

    scaly: slide trombone, interesting!

***SC lists down Blue and scaly as instrumentalists, and beams with delight with the lengthening roll of possible band members***
  • scalywag said on Sep 07, 2006....
hey, if you can tolerate it, I'd try my luck at singing too. Did you know I look a lot like Steven Tyler?

I played violin in school and took piano lessons in high school. My mother insisted that we all learn piano.
    I was awful at it.
I have a sister who plays by ear beautifully.

The only singing I do is in the shower.

All 3 of my children are very musical.
My son plays drums/guitar. My middle daughter plays clarinet, and my oldest clarinet, alto sax, and would very much like to take up french horn.
    My husband can sing.
I learned last year that he has been singing karaoke after his thursday golf games.

Haha! I'm enjoying this. I can't believe I almost forfeited my lunchbreak just to post a few lines and a new blog (please see "The SoulCasters' Story - Chapter II).

    quidnunc,
I'm not really sure whether it's a soprano recorder. I just know that it is a simple white recorder.
  • quidnunc said on Sep 08, 2006....
Blue: oh yes, the white recorder. Yamaha? it's called soprano recorder.
