It's not so difficult being a muslim. People always ask me is it difficult since there are so many things that we are not allowed to do or eat. We have to fast during the Ramadan month, not allowed to eat pork and touch dogs, no liquor/alcohol, can't eat anything that lives in both water and land, no sex before marriage and etc. Well, I don't think it is a burden or anything since I started fasting even before I converted into a Muslim.
Did you know that porks have some sort of worm in their meat? I previously studied Hotel Management and Catering and one of the lessons was on poultry and meat. Maybe pork is considered very dirty and unhealthy to consume that's why it's not allowed/'Haram'.
Alcohol can actually turn you into something or someone that you're not. Even though I used to like drinking (whisky!) but it has more negative points rather than positive ones. When you're drunk you can't even control yourself, you're like another person. Guys turn to rape, girls get raped and you make a clown of yourself!
I know sex before marriage is a hot topic! We know all man and woman are weak in this subject. I too was in this situation until I got married. At least not more sins! I know, I know, even after I converted I was still in this situation thats why i wanted to quickly get married to stop my sins. I married someone who was not my boyfriend you know!! Well, it was Allah's will, what can I say! I'll tell my love stories in another blog so keep track!
But I really thank Allah for looking after me. Luckily I did not get pregnant during this time, I couldn't bear to go for an abortion if I did. It's like killing your own flesh and blood you know! They will come back and haunt you if you did. I have a friend that even went for two abortions one month after the other!
I can't think of anything regarding dogs though.
I'll continue in my next blog...

    I am a Muslim.
    And this got me confused:
"can't eat anything that lives in both water and land"
  • elia_ann said on Sep 07, 2006....
Soulcasterer - What I know is that we can't eat anything that can breath / live in both water and on land such as certain frogs and crabs.
  • Susmaryosep said on Sep 08, 2006....
what about mud crabs in those seafood restaurants? Worms in pigs? What about mad cows disease, Bird flu.......?
  • SoulCasterer said on Sep 10, 2006....
Susmaryosep, sometimes you go over the board. Your comment was uncalled for and was unfunny. Know what? Stop pretending who you are not. It will make life easier on you.
  • Susmaryosep said on Sep 10, 2006....
You should not say there are worms in pigs, We have to be rational. I am just asking as I do not know the answer? Can Muslims eat those mudcrabs in seafood restaurants? Just yes or no, and stop pretending you are more religious than the others.... Pleassssse!
  • SoulCasterer said on Sep 10, 2006....
Who says I am pretending to be religious more than others? Have I even MENTIONED at ANYTIME that I am religious? I may not even be religious at all for all you know, doofuss. FYI, pig's meat do have worms. Try pouring coke or some form of light acid over a pig's meat and leave it for sometime. You'd see what elia_ann mean. And pleassssse, are you sure you are NOT Filipino? You seem to be one. With the way you love hanging out on their threads and all. Could it be that you're just making a spectacle of yourself?

    elia_ann, malesh.

What's wrong with being filipino? Ok, let's get the emotions out of the discussion. I think we should follow religion and avoid what a religion subscribes... I am merely asking, if we can't eat pork with germs, then we shouldn't eat beef with mad cow viruses, and chickens with flu, right? I am ONLY curious if Muslims can eat MudCrabs in the seafood restaurants, which were alive until they were killed for food. If you are a practising Muslim, can't you give a polite answer, instead of IMMEDIATELY say that I am going over board? A religious person should explain to the ignorant, and there by convince him to be a believer. Just saying that someone is overboard because he questions, is like as the Malays say "katak di bawah tempurong"?? Malesh!!!! Sheeeesh! BTW I am not a filipino, but you can meet so many nice ones in Soulcast, so don't cast your aspersions my friend!
  • elia_ann said on Sep 10, 2006....
Hey Sus, are you a muslim anyway? The worms that I'm talking about is not a disease, bacteria or virus where you die from them. Do you see any none muslims dying from eating pork? It might cause a long term damage to your body but it all depends on each individual. But it's a different case on JE as JE is a disease. If you don't believe me on the worms go and ask a cold meat chef.
And as for Mad cow disease and Bird flu, it's clearly stated disease right!?! You will die from eating them. Don't tell me you're going to eat them even though you already know they have that disease?!?! You just need some general knowledge to figure this out.
And I think we can eat mud crabs as they only live in the sea. They don't come out to land (As what I know!).
Out of curiosity, are you a lady or man cause your nick has the word Mary and in your comment you mentioned you are a he....?!?!??
Soulcasterer - Thx for backing me up but no need to get so worked up over a small matter. I'm open for comments. Keep up with the comments!! :-)

okay, SoulCast persons! BREAK IT UP!!!
my, my, my. there's so much "love" in this room...
    hahaha.

so let me get this straight, all THESE is a misunderstanding about WORMS?!?? Hardly worth getting the blood pressure up for. (lol. kiddin')

Hmm. Okay. So things are getting a little "personal" over here huh?

Soul, maybe you DID misunderstood the first question? And what's with the attack on being a Filipino? Just wondering.

and Sus, maybe Soul only meant "stop pretending who you are not. it will make life easier on you" as to stop pretending to be stupid when you are not. (*grin*) I mean, c'mon...the mud crab question was okay. but for the rest ("Worms in pigs? What about mad cows disease, Bird flu.......?"). like...dah! it does seem like silly follow-up questions. don't you think so, drinking-buddy-o-mine? ^_^

Look, i'm just trying to see things on my point of view. Alright?
So don't go firing at me after this.

    Kiss and make up?!???

    Uhh...wait.
Forget the kissing stuff. That'll be weird. How about just making up?
(Sus, no...NOT making out, okay?! Let's get that clear. lol)

    elia_ann, hi!
I've came across Susmaryosep in other threads / sites...I THINK he's a HE. (Correct me I'f I'm wrong, Sus! =P Don't go freakin' out on me) He says he's NOT Filipino. Although he does know quite A LOT of Filipino words. (which makes me go...hmmmm...*thinking*) And "Susmaryosep" is a shortened Filipino expression that means "Jesus, Mary and Joseph". (But Sus would probably go like..."So what?!?")

    ^_^

    Ooppsss...tooo looong comment. gotta run.

Some one tell me about this no touching dogs things, I have a lot of respect for Islam, it seems to be to be one of the better choose if one had had to choose. But I also care deeply my dog; I can’t imagine that being a sin.
  • elia_ann said on Sep 11, 2006....
    Habibti -
I think Sus could be a Malaysian or an Indonesian cauze if he knows 'Siti Nurhaliza' he's just from somewhere nearby.
So Sus, which nationality are you?

    Appollo -
It's not that dogs are evil or something, I really don't know though the reason why we can't touch dogs. I used to own dogs too you know, before I became a Muslim. I still think dogs are cute especially the puppys. We just can't touch them anymore. You know what, we can actually touch dogs if our hands are dry and the dogs fur/body are dry as well!! Funny ain't it?!?!
  • Apollo said on Sep 13, 2006....
That’s interesting; I think I will read up on it tonight. Thx elia ann!

Hi everyone, I am back from Langkawi, an island paradise, as beautiful as Boracay, and the beer just as cheap! Thanks for all your comments, and I think I like Habibti, she has a head full of common sense! And she is a Gemini ! Ok, ok. I think we all went overboard with this, and I am at fault.. I was just reacting to the pork issue; to say the final word, we should respect the food of other cultures. Let me say that pork is no dirtier than any other meat, if properly prepared, handled and cooked. There are worms in all meat! Maybe I was a little agitated, as there was a hint that pork is dirtier than other meat, that was why I reacted that way! I am sorry Ella ann, but as a Chinese, maybe you will understand how the Chinese and the filipinos love pork! As for Soulcasterer, let's forget about him. He should not cast aspersions over my filipino friends! Read his last sentence again, it is quite offensive.
  • elia_ann said on Sep 13, 2006....
    Morning everyone,

Hey Sus, no souveniers for us?!? :-)
I went to Langkawi once with my ex-collegues. A good place to shop for duty free stuff, relax and sightseeing. Would definitely go there again, this time with my kids. :-)

I'm always open for comments Sus so it's ok with me. I'm just giving my point of view on why 'Allah'(God) does not let us eat it but it might not be correct anyway as it's not stated in the Quran. It's just my opinion. So I think we better stop on this pork issue before it gets much longer.

Hey Sus, I was just wondering since you have many Filipino friends, how come I see quite a lot of Filipinos' are gay? As I have my page in Friendster.com I kinda browsed thru a few cute Filipino guys but it turns out they are gay! I hope this is not a sensitive issue. I do have friends who are gays so I'm not condeming them. Just out of curiosity.

Anyway, anyone who wants to view my page can go to this add. www.friendster.com/eliaann

    chow!!

    Ella_ann,
I am glad that you are broadminded, as I think any religious person should strive to be. Thanks for being patient.
Sorry I did not get any 'buah tangan' for you (it's pasalubong in Tagalog). No money lah!
It's ok to talk about the gay community, as I think constructive comments will help them to be better understood. The Philippines appear to have more "gays" for two reasons; 1.. there are about 80 million filipinos in the Phils. alone. 2..The Philippine Govt has an enlightened attitude towards Gays, and accept them as having equal rights as any other human on Earth. Compare this to the Malaysian Govt treatment of Anwar Ibrahim, who is alleged to be gay! So do you think the Malaysians will dare to openly profess to be gay (male or female).. As a % figure, I think malaysians have the same number of gays as the filipinos, but they are all in the 'closet'. And, again, we MUST never cast any aspersions at them, or at any race. I believe all are equal under the eyes of God/Allah. But personally I think open Gays should not be priests.......
  • SoulCasterer said on Sep 14, 2006....
Sus, excuse me? So I'm now "casting aspersions" over your Filipino friends? And I've STATED that? ...where? my last sentence? let me check that again.
okay. malesh means "sorry". but you probably know that.
and if you're REFERRING to "Could it be that you're just making a spectacle of yourself?". I was merely asking here too.
I passed by some thread by sigroid75 (I think), where everyone was asking if you were Filipino. So you said you were not. But with me reading how much you know about Tagalog words and Filipino culture got me thinking for a while. SO I ASKED. Okay?!? And reading here that you're Malaysian came a little too late because I've already posted my "offending" last sentence.
FYI, I do have Filipino friends. And I get along fine with them. Thank you. In fact, I've had 3 serious relationships in my life. And 2 of them are with Filipinas.
Apologies if I sounded rude more than I wanted to be. Maybe it was a spur of the moment thing over the "worms in pigs?" issue. I just saw RED after reading that comment.
I am willing to just shrug off whatever misunderstanding that came between us. Here's hoping you do your part. But I must say, everything could have been a good debate. Hahaha. Don't you think so?

Habibti, I'm not "attacking" anybody on their being Filipinos. Or whatever nationality they may be. Everybody is equal to the eyes of Allah, or God. Whichever you prefer. This is so because I believe that all our "gods" are one and the same, just with different names. Besides, I guess I have to let you know that you KNOW ME more that you think you do. (wink) But I'm not giving any more hints. Not yet. And if you only knew who I really was, YOU would know for yourself that attacking someone's character, nationality or belief is at the bottom of my list. Maybe not even on the same page, if you know what I mean. Okay, just one more hint: I got here after reading your "other" blogs. Think. Think. Think.

And to everyone: I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST GAYS. Let me just make this statement clear from the start. And I'm NOT gay. How about you Sus? Being gay is not "acceptable" from where I come from. But then again, with regards to their lifestyles, I try to be as open-minded as the next person.
  • Susmaryosep said on Sep 14, 2006....
Sorry I am not gay, and the picture that can make me puke is Elton John in his 'Wedding Gown" complete with Trail.... But I think the gays deserve our respect, at least. My My, habibti and Soulcasterer actually know each other.. Read my post titled "is it possible....?". Serendipity?

Ok, we will end the discussion on the "worm pig" issue, and I will just reproduce your last sentence, in italics

...And pleassssse, are you sure you are NOT Filipino? You seem to be one. With the way you love hanging out on their threads and all. Could it be that you're just making a spectacle of yourself?..

Read in the context of the worms, the mad cow, and the bird flu, don't you think there is a tone of derogative sarcasm? But if you say I have misunderstood, and you mean it in a friendly manner, it's ok with me.. I am too old to have quarrels, and I love pinays too much to waste time arguing. Tama? Salamat po at Ingat lagi.
  • habibti said on Sep 14, 2006....
