I was called into an emergency again today. This time it was severed fingers! Poor guy. He was a meatcutter (go figure). Anyway, I was trying to figure out how I was going to approach this surgery, as I have never done this before. The patient was rolled into the operating room with a large roll of red soaked gauze. A few seconds later, his fingers came in, neatly tucked into a sterile container.
We tried to wash the stumps but they were bleeding so badly that we had to put clamps on the little pumpers to prevent the entire room from becoming soaked (exaggerated). The nurse had to actually go change her scrubs.
The surgeon sat down and started picking at the stumps with a few pointy instruments. Thank goodness this person was asleep. I couldn't imagine the pain! I felt myself flinching every time he scraped and my eyes welled up with tears of pain.
I had to leave the case before we finished. It was time to go home and frankly, I couldn't take anymore.
Lets just say I will probably never eat a hot dog again in my life (sorry for the visual to all you hot dog lovers out there)!
