UGG TREND BOON FOR BUSINESS Gwyneth Paltrow's fashion sense has led to a mini jobs boom in Christchurch. Ms Paltrow, who sported the Uggs Boots while in New Zealand filming earlier this year, is just one celebrity who has made the 1980s fashion icon part of her wardrobe. Nearly two decades after the last Uggs trod the streets they are back as a fashion item with Pamela Anderson and Kate Hudson also favouring the woolly boots. This is good news for Christchurch sheepskin business G. L. Bowron, which is looking for 30 process workers after a 50 per cent increase in orders for the woolly raw materials for the boots. Managing director Chris Port said yesterday the Ugg boots-related order was a nice boost at a time when the business was being squeezed by a strong kiwi dollar. "They're a real fashion item in America, especially among the celebrities. And now the British seem to be picking them up." The buoyant kiwi dollar -- which was trading at US59.41c yesterday -- meant not a lot of money was to be made out of exports to the United States now, but the business was sticking at it, he said. "You've got to keep people working. If you lose them you never get them back," he said. Emily Drysdale, designer at Christchurch fashion label Untouched World, said the Ugg was definitely back.
