Divers patronize around 70 dive shops accredited by the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD), whose job is to regulate these establishments and ensure the safe and orderly conduct of sports scuba diving activities in the country. Their long-term aim is to have all dive shops operating in the area to measure up to standards.
PCSSD executive director Cynthia L. Carreon, also head of the Philippine Commission on Sports and Wellness of the Department of Tourism (DoT), has said time and again that Filipinos need to preserve the fast-diminishing coral reefs that are an important attraction for tourists.
The bulk of these tourists who travel expressly to dive, she told BusinessWorld that day, hail from Germany, Russia, Italy and China. For their part, the Marco Vincent Dive Center has mounted sporadic clean-up dives in the area these past years, part of a nationwide initiative for divers to keep the waters clean of refuse.
