One of his most shocking discoveries was why the IPCC has been able to show sea levels rising by 2.3mm a year. Until 2003, even its own satellite-based evidence showed no upward trend. But suddenly the graph tilted upwards because the IPCC's favoured experts had drawn on the finding of a single tide-gauge in Hong Kong harbour showing a 2.3mm rise. The entire global sea-level projection was then adjusted upwards by a "corrective factor" of 2.3mm, because, as the IPCC scientists admitted, they "needed to show a trend".

d6- Let me tell you what I don't understand.

If we were going into an ice age or a warming through the natural cycle of the planet there would be little we could do about it except attempt to lessen its effects if possible and effects of those attempts would probably be slight.

What we do seem to know is that ice caps are melting and movements in the oceans are being affected such as the gulf stream as two examples. What we do not know is what is causing these things with proof.

Another thing we do know is that pollution affects life, the food we eat, the oceans, the air, just about anything you could name. So what is it you and all the others are arguing about? What I am saying is, what the hell difference does it make if pollution will begin an ice age or warming or not?

Regardless of whether pollution will instigate an earth cycle, doing nothing about it will provide our children's children with an unhealthy living environment and worse economies and could lead to virtually irreparable conditions.

How much of the planet do people want to destroy and how much litter do people want left to future generations to clean up at much greater cost before this stupid- assed argument is settled, if ever?

That is what I do not understand.

We could do it logically and effectively. We could begin with clean burning fuels which would not only help the environment, but would give the largest boost to the economy imaginable. It would take decades, but decades later we would be light years ahead of doing nothing.

Don't talk to me about the habitat of reindeer in Northern Alaska, tell me where I am wrong.

I can tell you why the sea level rises... Ships. A country introduces a navy (especially submarines) that are tons in size and it displaces the water. That's just good old fashioned science discrediting good old fashioned liberal stupidity.

    Next question, please!
  • beyondtheveil said on May 18, 2009....
java- I'm going to assume you are serious. I know of no scientific example that the displacement of ship's hulls will displace enough water to even be calculated by the best equipment for sea level rise.  My very untrained mind might suggest that the total tonnage of ships and submarines increased a billion fold could possibly be detected through sea level, but I doubt it.

The earth's surface is 70% covered in oceans all connected at an average depth of 2/3rds of a mile. I would really like to know how many boats it would take to raise sea level to a calculable possibility.

I would prefer to believe a new study by US and Australian climate researchers who published in Nature magazine that a possible cause of sea level rise since 1961 is due to expansion of the ocean's top 700 meter layer which has warmed 50% faster than expected.

Darn, I forgot to research if climate researchers are all liberals.

Because if they all are, they would throw their scientific reputation to the wind and report only what they wanted to report.

I love these things... Especially morons who can't use math. That's 180ft, no no, 200ft, no no, really 230ft! It just never ends!! But I agree with Peter. I also love how CBS always asks "how much ice is left?" Well, duh! All of it... Just ask these nimrods!

java- I've always wondered why melting in the Arctic would raise sea level since it floats on an ocean. That helps quite a lot. By the way, I don't know if we are in global warming or not. I said as much to d6fer in the comment to him. In fact, I don't much care if we're in global warming so long as it doesn't create a worldwide catastrophe. And I don't care about sea level so long as it doesn't flood our coastal cities or kill the oceans.

So what about that comment? Am I wrong?
  • javadewd said on May 18, 2009....
I don't think it's a bad stance, but who am I to judge anybody's stance... You're not exploiting it for monetary or political gain, so I'm not going to jump your ass about it.

I think we're in global cooling, but what do I know. I'm not freezing my balls off in the arctic claiming the poles are melting... I still think that's funnier than shit!

beyond....you are conflating C02 and toxic pollution.....they are two different things......no one wants toxic pollution.......more and more scientists with plenty of credibility are speaking up against the likes of Al Gore and the global warming alarmists......I heard recently that a new study shows that the sun is heading into a period of low sunspot activity, which will cool the earth significantly......the last time this happened we had a mini ice age back in the 1700's......I wonder how Al Gore will spin that to fit his agenda?

d6- Carbon dioxide is toxic and CO2 poisoning is called hypercapnia or respiratory acidosis. However I do realize your point between the two. Regardless of whether it would be considered  a pollutant (it would in above 1% concentration), the battle and commitment garnered by global warming interferes where the commitment should be and that is pollution control.
  • javadewd said on May 19, 2009....
D6 - If it's hot, it's global warming. If it's cold, it's global warming. If the ice caps melt 0.00001 of an inch, it's global warming. If there are hurricanes, it's global warming. If it's a sunny day outside, thank global warming.

It's just a big fucking racket. Never heard of pollution control... It must be on the pages after global warming!
  • beyondtheveil said on May 19, 2009....
java- I'm sure it is on the pages after global warming, that's my point.

Besides which, I think its losing appeal anyway, too many other problems closer to home.

I'd love somebody to create a post on pollution vs. global warming. I'm all about cleaning up the environment (except I think the green initiative takes it just a bit too far) from 3rd world countries to industrialized nations, but with "global warming" advocates flying around in jets and lobbying congress for pork-barrel projects, well, the term just puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Hopefully my view makes sense to people, like it or hate it...

We have this guy around my neck of the woods named Larry Rice. I don't buy his religious views, but he has a monthly get-together of green advocates who come up with some of the neatest shit : solar arrays for home/personal use, water shed technologies, point-source hot water heaters (I forgot what they call them now), generators that are low-emission, direct current lighting, wind turbines that don't stick out like a sore thumb and more... Some people think he does it just for the whole "survivalist" genre, but practical is practical. If I could afford take my wife's house off the grid and/or sell energy back to the utility companies, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I heard that some states even give tax credits for buying these US$20k systems that literally take your house off the utility grid...

Rising sea levels, global warming, I don't have any scientific facts on it what so ever, or any math numbers.
Though, what I DO think, is it shouldn't take something like rising sea levels or global warming or any other catastrophe like that to make us want to clean up the mess we've made of the world.
Honestly, humans are really fucking up the world, destroying forests, polluting the waters etc.
But that is just my opinion, no scientific facts, no numbers no nothing. Not even questioning the fact that the rising sea is a scam, it just shouldn't take something like that for us to try clean up the world.
