Beijing. The last time I was here was in October 1999. Seven years ago, things were not like what I’m seeing now. I could not help but marvel at the major transformation of the city, and much of that can be attributed to its hosting the 2008 Olympics. The Peking Man’s city is vibrant and seems ready and eager to embrace the world.
With 703 days to go before the world games, the Beijing Organizing Committee’s work is in full steam. You can sense and see it all over Beijing. As a visitor, you can already feel the Olympic spirit and the makings of a successful international event.
Since being awarded the host city in July 2001, China lost no time in building world-class sports facilities and venues such as the National Stadium, National Aquatic Center, and the National Indoor Stadium, among others. And awash with cash, China is set to prove that it is worthy to host the most spectacular sports activity in the world.
Regarded as a “sleeping giant” more than a decade ago, China has indeed awakened and has flexed its muscles in the international arena. When I visited Shanghai last year and saw for myself the landmarks and edifice, as well as the skyline which is comparable to Europe, I was converted into a full-fledged believer. Yes, I thought to myself, China has indeed come of age.
