Last week, I saw a footage of a slaugther house. I thought its the usual slaughter house for pigs. But I was shocked when I saw the crew of the facility poured a boiling water to a live pig. Yes a live pig! The report said it's the facilities way of killing pigs. If you could see how helpless those burned body pigs, crawling trying to get way from their murderer. You woudn't want to eat pork ever again. Until now the footage still flashes in my mind like a haunting. It felt like I'm responsible for their agony. Beacause I, too eat meat. It so saddening to learn that pigs went to these torture after they meet their doom. Afterwards their sliced flesh will be taken for trade, chopped for cooking, eaten and digested to shit. What a fate!:(

Have you seen what they do to chickens? It sucks to be food, we better make damn sure we stay on top of the food chain!
  • cbrain said on Sep 04, 2006....
Oh yes! When my mom kill (i hope i got the right term) one of our chicken even pigs we grew backyard I dared not eat it. No thanks. If I do, It's like eating a pet.

But you I've heard there are really ppl who eat ppl. They do it to gain some kind of superstitous power. I hope I dont run with them.

I actually went on a telephone repair call with a technician to a factory in baltimore md where they slaughtered pigs.
When you entered the place you could smell this very odd smell, and i remember climbing the stairs there was a kind of grime on the railings.

The actual electrocution was performed on the roof of the building.

I've not looked at pork the same way since...

Pigs were domesticated and bred for human consumption.

I'm looking forward for my next vacation. I miss lechon and grilled pork!

secretlife: do you find it hard to eat pork? knowing the process pigs went trough?
  • cbrain said on Sep 05, 2006....

cbrain: have you heard about "pinikpikan"? Pinikpikan is a kind of pulutan in the Cordilleras and Ilocandia. A chicken or duct is beaten all through out its body while it's alive with stick so that the blood will cloth in the flesh. Its literally "Kiliing me softly". I tasted once only. Just for curiosity.

Yeah it is sad, I try not to think of those things while I eat. I am strongly thinking of becoming vegetarian lately.
  • bloc said on Sep 05, 2006....
    i am a vegetarian. Have been for 8 or 9 years :)

bloc: I couldn't watch the whole piece.
    The screaming was too much.

    I eat meat.
    I eat pork.

I believe there has to be a humane way to harvest our
    food.
  • bloc said on Sep 05, 2006....
secretlife, there are more humane practices. I forget what they are called right now because I don't eat meat :) cage free or free range, maybe?

The problem is that these lables are very vague and I never put it past industry to do the bare minimum required to have a label or even to lie and cheat to make a buck.

I guess you could be like ted nugent and hunt your own ;)

    Soilent green anyone?

wonder who will get the reference... Probably shouldn't even mention 'to serve man', the literary reference would go over too many heads.

I'm definetly not a vegitarian. Though, if I had to kill it myself, I'd probably develope a sudden love of fish and salad...

And maybe snakes, I have no problem killing snakes, especially rattle snakes...

brown_sagittarius: I know pinikpikan, but even if it taste gud I could not bare eating it after seeing how the poor thing died. Its like killing it the second time around with my own mouth.

Marie-Jane: change to vegetarian, I agree with you. I tried it before but my stomach upset is killing me.

bloc: did you have the same stomach upset when you became vegetarian?
  • bloc said on Sep 05, 2006....
cbrain, i did not have any stomach problems. What kinds of food were you eating?

I didn't quit eating meat in a single day though. I stopped red meat for about a week or two, then gave up meat all together.
  • sigroid75 said on Sep 05, 2006....
what? where did you see that?

i've seen the double dead feature on balitang K
and those other meats that are sold but are infested
    or something...

but i've never seen the way they are killed...
    kawawa naman...

When I was a kid I used to cry and hide everytime my parents kills a pig for trade. I could not bare the screaming too.

indiefilm: snake, is a exotic food here in the Phils. it taste like chicken meat. As a kid I tried it, it taste gud. But today, no thanks.
  • mymave2006 said on Sep 05, 2006....
