Betsy Johnson 003

I love to talk to people.  Working in an airport is the best job someone like me could possibly have, despite the lousy pay, 10 hour days without breaks, and my aching feet.

I talk to everyone whether they're in the mood to talk or not, but somehow everyone is in the mood to talk to me.  My friend Suze the bartender is fond of saying, or rather sneering, "Everybody loves you!"  (you have to say it with a sneer to know how she really feels...lol).
And I reply, "Why yes, yes they do."  I guess it's because I make the effort to make everyone feel at home in our cafe.

I was poring a coffee for a young woman tonight, my last customer, leaving on the last flight to LA Guardia.  She was on the phone with her mom in NY, so excited because her favorite designer was on the same flight.  When she hung up, I asked her who it was.  She said Betsey Johnson came through security right behind her.  Poor thing was so awe-struck she could barely speak.
"No kidding", I said, "Where is she?"
"At the bar.  I can't believe it!  She's right over there!"
"Go talk to her, go on."
"I can't!  Oh my God, no, I wouldn't know what to say, no, no."
I said, "Look, give me your email address.  You can trust me, see?  I have a security badge", and I laughed.  I told her I'd take a picture of Betsey and send it to her.
"Are you serious?"
"Sure.  I'll ask her if she minds, if she says she rather I didn't, I'll just thank her and leave her alone".

So I get my camera out of my bag and go to the bar.  Betsey is just about to ask Brian for a glass of wine when I say, "Excuse me, Miss Johnson, there's a young lady over there who is a very big fan of your designs but is too shy to talk to you.  Would you mind if I took a picture of you so I could email it to her to show her mom?"
Good timing, too, because Brian thought she looked like she'd already had a few and wasn't going to serve her.  Have you ever seen Betsey Johnson?  I think she's adorable, but he's never heard of her so he just thought she looked weird.

She was so sweet.  I took a picture and she said, "Lemme see, lemme see.  Yuck, take another one.  Lemme see. Can you delete that one?  Take another one."
Finally satisfied, she asked where the young woman was.  When I pointed her out she asked why she didn't come talk to her herself.  I said "She's young, you know, and very shy, I'm old and very not shy."  She loved that, cracked her up.  Then she asked how old I was.  I told her I was 60, and she said, "Well, I've got 6 years on you and I'm very not shy, too."
I said "Shut up!  You are NOT 66!  Girl, you are my hero!".
They announced boarding and she said she was going to talk to her new fan and she'd see me next time.
So I just emailed this picture to Tonya.  If she hadn't been so scared, she could have been in the picture.  Sometimes you just gotta take a chance.

I so love you Twyla. I would have done exactly the same thing but when I was younger like Tonya, no way. One of the perks of being well seasoned. Just don't care. What's the worst that could happen??? We're on the same ride!!
  • Twylarants said on Apr 28, 2009....
I guess people just trust us more because we look harmless.  But we know better, don't we....  ; )

Ginger~ Have you seen pictures of her apartment?  Totally pink!  I'm telling you, she is just adorable.  Do you know she does a cartwheel after every one of her fashion shows?
Woman, do you hear that?  A cartwheel at 66!  I'm tired from just typing the word!  She's only about 5' tall and can't weigh more than 90 pounds.  After she left I sat at the bar and told Brian I wanted 2 of whatever she was drinking!
  • gingersoul said on Apr 28, 2009....

    I know!.....lol....

I want the white dress with the large gown and the long multicolored dress toward the end of the catwalk video...so pretty....

Though.....she should start to use more plumpy models.....those girls are really anorexic....

Whatever you were drinking......pass it on.....lol..

Wow, that's really cool Twyla!  I'd be the bum who'd be too shy to say anything, but lol, I'd be ecstatic to come across someone like yourself who'd bridge the gap maybe.

wow! you rock!  Twirlie, you have a real gift with your ability to talk to people.

Thanks for putting the vids up, Ginger...isn't she cute?
Oh poo, Heg and Uni, anybody can talk to anybody.  I talked to Cassius Clay (before he became Mohammad Ali) in the City many years ago.  My boyfriend at the time and I were walking around when we noticed this group of men walking towards us.  The one in the middle was a tall, handsome man, and my boyfriend told me it was Cassius Clay.  So I stepped into the middle of the sidewalk.  What were they gonna do...run me down?  I was this cute little redhead...they had to stop for me...lol!
I said, "Oh my God...you're gorgous!"  Well, he was!   He smiled and winked at me, moved around me and kept walking.
It's easy to talk to celebrities...just flatter them.  I told Linda Lavin that she had the color hair I wanted...it's pure white.  She told me I had to wait til I was as old as she was.  I said, "I'm right behind ya, Cookie."  She's a doll.
My son saw what's her name...Tony Soprano's wife, Carmela, in the supermarket during a break from filming the show.  They wouldn't let him go back to the meat counter to pick up a piece of steak.  He looked like hell, all sweaty and dirty from work climbing telelphone poles, he was hungry and tired.  He caught her eye, put on his most pathetic face and said, "I just want a steak.  My mom's a butcher and I  called her and asked which kind to buy.  She's gonna call me later to see if it was any good."  How could she resist, right?  She took him back there herself and picked out a nice rib eye for him.  He wasn't starstruck, just really hungry...lol.

Ginger ~ The calypso kind of dress with the ruffles on the bias?  Love it!  And the black and white striped onesy is adorable.

i love, love, love her dresses!!!!!!!!!!!!!

her clothes are colorful!!! and did you know that she always do a cartwheel after a her runway show???? can't belive she's 66 and still do that!!! ;-)

  • woman said on Apr 29, 2009....
Twyla!! I couldn't do a cartwheel as a child and thinking about attempting one NOW makes me consider checking myself into rehab...
  • Twylarants said on Apr 29, 2009....
A cartwheel! Can you believe that? Tonya was afraid Betsey would stay in the ladies room until it was time to board so I was really glad she came out...I didn't want to take my camera into the bathroom, that's just rude, you know?
I think that the more established the celebrity, the more used to attention they are, the more they welcome it.  They like to know that people appreciate their work.  Now, the young ones like the Dawson's Creek kids seemed to let it go to their heads when that show began filming here.  Some of them came into the bookstore I was managing and annoyed the customers with their "look at me, I'm a star!" antics.  But they got over it before long.  I guess the sheer drudgery of 12 hour filming in the marsh posing as the Creek in the middle of the night in 90 degree weather gave them a jolt of reality pretty quickly.
The townies who were sitting in a long line of cars waiting for the shot to end so the cop could wave us on were not too happy either.  I did that more times than I can count because I live a few blocks past the marsh.  Eww, the mosquitos, not to mention the smell!  Not a very glamorous life for Katie Holmes in those days.

  • fragglesrock said on Apr 29, 2009....

how cool, i love hearing about celebrity sightings :) it's awesome that she was so nice! good job twyla! you're that young girls' hero now i'm sure

  • woman said on Apr 29, 2009....

Well Twyla, when they become stars so young it hurts their development, don't you think? If you have a few years on you, you're more balanced. Wrinkly but balanced.

I'm still impressed with the cartwheel? Can you do one?

  • alabamagirl said on Apr 29, 2009....
How cool is that!  You sound like a joy to be around Twyla.  I probably couldn't done that.  Even though the pay isn't great, sounds fun, being at the airport, seeing all kinds of people.  Most of the jobs I would rather be in would be fun, even great, but just never seem to pay well!

If you ever run across John Cussack.........I don't agree with his politics per se, but I could always tape his mouth shut! :)

I love airports for that same reason. It's amazing who you'll bump into. My dad sat in a bar with Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers once. That was one of a dozen star-struck encounters for him. I've seen my share. I used to hang with a gal named Valorie (she's all married now) and people would walk up and just start talking to one of us (usually guys me and gals her). We're just people magnets... Maybe people like us should run for public office or something.

Phew! For a moment I thought it was you in the picture!
Well, good for you to go ahead and get the photo for the young lady. And to break the ice so that Betsey would go and talk to her.

Many years ago I watched a series from Scotland called the Munroe Show, about Scotland's Munroes (mountains over 3,000 ft). The host was a woman named Muriel Grey. A couple of months after the series ended my girlfriend at the time and I were in the Rockies and I went to use the toilet. when I came out my gf said she was sure she had just seen Muriel Grey looking at the lake shore. I asked if she had gone up and asked her if she was indeed Ms. Grey. My gf she that it hadn't ocurred to her to ask. "Where is she now?" I asked, looking around for a fit young woman with blonde spiky hair. "I don't know. She's gone." I couldn't believe that my gf hadn't gone up and asked. I would have! I think Ms. Grey would have been pleased to know that two Canadians had been watching her Scotish show.

Aawww Twyla everybody does love u....me especially :-)

Thats one energetic 66 yr old! I hope I have that much life in me at her age.....and I hope I have your poise to boot....I bet you taught that girl a lesson in seizing the moment. Once she gets over being star struck she'll realize the most important thing she learned was that if she hesitates, then she loses the moment...forever.

I just got a reply from Tonya thanking me for sending the picture.  She felt bad about not speaking to Betsey, bad that she missed an opportunity to talk to someone she admires so much.  She was so bummed when she got on the plane, and guess who sits down right in front of her?  They talked the whole flight back to NY!  She's so excited.  She can't wait to come through our airport again and tell me all about it.
Today I served a bunch of magicians flying to San Fran for some kind of show and I learned some card tricks, not that I'll remember them...lol.

Aww, Cannoli...I love you, too.  I'm saving my Anthony for you, don't forget!

You thought that was me, Hotaka?  I wish!

J'Dewed ~   Bill Medley...sigh...I had such a crush on him way back when.  Oh my God, that voice melted me...sigh...

I'll get a picture of John Cusack and an autograph just for you, P.  If he has a drink I'll steal the glass and send it to you, ok?

Thanks, CW.  I couldn't not do it, she was beside herself in awe of Betsey.  I'm so glad she had the chance to speak to her.  She's such a friendly person.

Lu ~ You know that expression "more nerve than brains"?  That's me.

A'Girl ~ Yeah, I'm lucky.  I always needed to make money...4 kids, you know?  But now I'm able to do with a little less money so this job is perfect.  I can make more tip-wise just by being extra funny or charming or whatever. Once the looks go you gotta have something to fall back on...lol   ; )

Woman, you crack me up!  You've heard of the BBW...Big Beautiful Women?  We're the WBB...Wrinkly But Balanced....bwa ha ha ha !

Thanks, Frags...it's nice to be someone else's hero for a change.  I have a different hero every day.  Anyone who lifts something heavy for me is my hero, whoever makes a cheeseburger for me in work is my hero, step on a roach for me?  You're my hero.  Unclog the esppresso machine...my hero, offer to mop the cafe floor?  You're my hero.  I'm so easy!

Trav ~ you'd be surprised!  Some people don't even like me but as long as they stay away from me, it's all good.

Queenie ~ I'll bet you'd look beautiful in her bright colors.  You have to google "Betsey Johnson's pink apartment", it's fantastic!
