Do you think that it is right for your job to spy on you when you call in sick?

A Swiss insurance worker lost her job after surfing popular social network site Facebook

The woman said she could not work in front of a computer as she needed to lie in the dark but was then seen to be active on Facebook, which insurer Nationale Suisse said in a statement had destroyed its trust in the employee.

"This abuse of trust, rather than the activity on Facebook, led to the ending of the work contract," it said.

The unnamed woman said she had been surfing Facebook in bed on her iPhone and accused her employer of spying on her and other employees by sending a mysterious friend request which allows access to personal online activity.

Her job rejected the accusation of spying and said the employee's Facebook activity had been stumbled across by a colleague in November, before use of the social network site was blocked in the company.

I Maybe she started feeling better and just wanted to check her page, you know how boring it can be when you are in bed sick.

Do you think she should have lost her job?

I don't think she should have, personally, if she was actually on her phone.  I do believe, however, that she probably shouldn't have used the excuse that she couldn't look at a computer screen that day.  I say this because that sort of does make you wonder why she would get on the computer, and in this day and age loads of people spend time on the computer while they're sick because they feel too crappy to do much else.  An iPhone isn't a hell of a lot different than a computer, its just more compacted.  Either way, I think there were mistakes on both sides, really.

No way. What i do in the privacy of my home is not my boss's business. Period.

If i show up the next day, as i was supposed to do after my absence, and i resume  working as usual...its not up to my boss investigating if i was really sick or not the day before.
    This is just plain bs.

That's why companies give employees a determined number of days off: sick days, personal days or vacations.....whatever... they are employees privileges and no boss should ever question how they are used.

Hope the woman sue back the company and win.

Hege, I know they say you should always tell the truth and be honest but the woman is in her home probably in the bed, seems like an invasion of privacy.

Ginger you are so right, and what gets me is the way that they did it, sending a friend request.

Queen I don't think she should have been fired, you have to be careful who you trust for sure.
