The good news: New research is giving scientists a better handle on when the big one might strike the Pacific Coast.

The bad news: It probably will be sooner than we thought.

"The amount of devastation is going to be unbelievable," says Rob Witter, coastal geologist with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. "People aren't going to be ready for this. Even if they are prepared, they are going to be surprised by the level of devastation."

Witter spoke last week about the latest in earthquake and tsunami studies -- it's Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness Month -- as part of state and local efforts to educate the public on preparing for a megaquake of magnitude 9 or more. Witter and James Roddey, spokesman for the state agency, also will give a public talk Tuesday in Newport.

Witter says scientists are now in wide agreement that there's a 10 to 14 percent chance a powerful earthquake and tsunami will strike the Oregon coast in the next 50 years.

Why do they think that? The latest findings come from Chris Goldfinger, director of the Active Tectonics and Seafloor Mapping Lab at Oregon State University, Roddey says. But to understand Goldfinger's work, Roddey goes back to what he calls "one of the great scientific detective stories of the 20th century."

Twenty-five years ago, scientists didn't think the Cascadia subduction zone -- a place 50 to 75 miles off Oregon where two of the Earth's plates meet, one sliding under the other -- could produce earthquakes.

That changed after Brian Atwater, a renowned geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, began in the mid-1980s to study earthquakes, eventually tracing a theory all the way to Japan, Roddey says.

Atwater studied a "ghost forest" -- dead trees in a tidal marsh -- by the Copalis River in Washington, and theorized that a megaquake had killed the cedars. But he needed more evidence.

That came when Japanese researchers published a paper in 1996 about a tsunami that struck Japan on Jan. 27, 1700. Atwater was so intrigued that he learned the language and traveled to Japan.

In 2003, he and a team of Japanese researchers published the book "The Orphan Tsunami" about their theory that the last megaquake struck the Oregon coast Jan. 26, 1700, spawning the tsunami that washed over Japan hours later.

"This was the final puzzle piece that convinced everyone we had the potential for great earthquakes," Roddey says. Work to understand just how great has gone on ever since.

Enter Goldfinger, the OSU researcher. "Chris has been able to go back 10,000 years, and by studying offshore landslides, he found that we've had about 20 of these magnitude9-plus subduction zone earthquakes where the whole 600-mile-long fault ruptures," Roddey says.

Then he found 18 other quakes magnitude8 to 8.5 in the southern part of the subduction zone. "So instead of 20 subduction zone earthquakes, we're up to 38," Roddey says.

And, Witter says, instead of thinking giant quakes occur every 500 years, Goldfinger's work puts the cycle at 300 to 350 years.

"We've almost doubled the probability of these events happening," Roddey says. "It just gives a whole lot more urgency to educate the folks at the coast that, 'Hey, you got to get ready.'"

Native Americans, Roddey says, have known this for centuries. Inhabiting the coast for 10,000 years, they passed stories of big quakes from generation to generation.

"They created a cultural tradition by retelling these events and legends," Roddey says. "We see that around the world. When the Sumatra earthquake struck (the Indian Ocean), the Andaman Islands were right in the middle of the rupture zone. There was huge ground shaking, but very few people died from the tsunami because they had also created this culture of awareness. They went to high ground. They survived the event."

Though the Sumatra and Cascadia subduction zones differ, Witter says, a tsunami here would be much the same.

"The geology and numerical models predict tsunamis could reach as high as 80 to 100 feet in Oregon, which is similar to the tsunami that struck Sumatra," Witter says. "We need to be very cautious and prepare for that event. It may not happen in a person's lifetime, but if it does, it's going to be equivalent to a Katrina-like event."

That doesn't mean we need to live in fear, though.

"Once you get prepared and you know where high ground is, once you've talked to your family about an emergency plan and talked about all those kinds of things, you've done your homework. You don't have to think about it again."

    are u in California mixednuts?

here in Hawaii, we are preparing for the tsunami that would possibly get triggered -- as was the situation last time. they mention Japan, but didn't mention Hawaii -- we're in between --

glad our farm is at 900 ft elevation....that's above the severe tsunami line -- similar to the severe Indian Ocean tsunami -- these big earthquakes (8 and above) tend to occur during the full moon bc the tidal movements contribute to the tectonic movements.

with all the earthquake swarms that have been occurring as a result of the Cascadia Subduction zone, I do believe it is building pressure. As to where the slip will occur, well it is anyone's guess. but did you hear that a scientist predicted the big italy quake, he even tried to warn the populace but the authority figures didn't want to create a panic. As it turns out, many lives would have been spared if they had simply listened to chicken little who also had a tremendous scientific resume.

Here in the US, we seem to be a little more pro-active about taking these warnings seriously, in Portland Oregon they retrofitted all the bridges and skyscrapers....one of the reason major earthquakes don't kill more Americans.

the Pacific Ocean is completely wired to warn us of a tsunami, unless it is generated by a local earthquake -- we had one this week -- it sure made the volcano go off, making it very difficult to breathe. I ran to the forest where the oxygen is able to hold the vog back. Vog is much worse than smog bc it has acid and heavy metals ewwww!

anyway, this is one of the things that makes Hawaii challenging at times, but to me, small time compared to the benefits.

a lot of political things going on here now that the Hawaiian Ceded lands issue is in front of the Supreme Court. The natives are restless and threatening....one can literally choke on the racism and hatred arising from this law suit....some of the same issues as experienced in Israel are happening here, but with less violence -- maybe because it is not a conflict drawn along religious lines. Religion tends to create hot trigger points that are not easily negotiated.

The Hawaiian's have been very patient, mostly because they cannot agree among themselves. there is a lot of confusion and self-defeating communication models being tossed around, while the warrior classes just continue to get agitated. Now more than ever, bc the economic disparity is becoming too large to ignore. What a mess!

but, I seem to do just fine between the worlds, aligned with neither side, continually calling for island wide self-sufficiency. This is becoming a more widely agreed upon tack to overcome the stuck racial issues that came from the take over of the past monarchy.

aloha mixednuts....are u in Northern Cal? That's close to where I was born, just over the Oregon border along the coast. I guess there is an undersea volcano that has been erupting 30 miles off the coast of S. Oregon for about 10 years now... I wonder if this exacerbates the Cascadia subduction zone. But from what I have studied, there are twin undersea volcanoes erupting along that subduction zone -- one near Vancouver British Columbia and the other one i mentioned. It's possible that these two volcanoes are adding matter to the rift....in essence contributing to the squeeze job happening at the New Madrid fault below the Great Lakes. that could be the weak point that goes, instead of at the coast. As I watched the earthquake swarms, it was all triangulated with the New Madrid fault. Since that fault is comprised of old ocean sediment that has been mined to be like swiss cheese, I predict that is where the pressure will release. but, who really knows...I just continue to pay attention and stay prepared because we are in the middle of a millennial earthchange episode -- dangerous but fascinating!

OAK HILL, OHIO -- A 3.4 magnitude earthquake was felt around 9:42 this morning in southern Ohio. The epicenter was about 5 miles NNW of Oak Hill, OH. You can see more info with the link below.

    here we go

    remember mixed up baby?

I was talk'in about triangulating the Cascadia Subduction zone with the New Madrid fault?

ohio is in the middle of it

    the San Andreas is swarming

    yellowstone is swarming

    reno had been swarming

and Vancouver Island has been vibrating from the undersea volcano

i think this volcano is called Axis

    how ironic

everyone is tracking North and there are those that think it will continue to move to the S Atlantic Ocean where a major magnetic anomoley is showing on satellite images....its rockin and rollin my friend

    and it would be much easier for me to trust you and feel good opening to you if you did the same...could you pm me and let me know what names we interacted with in the past? it would help me to feel grounded at SC, since you are one of the few persona's that interacts with me....they continue to read me avidly, yet offer silence -- typical polarization community agreements that are hardly worth persuing...even so mixed nuts, you keep interacting with me in the middle of a group agreement. The fact that you remember our past conversations, but I do not have the same insights in regard to you, this relationship is not reciprocal. and, since i abhor private messaging as much as i hate the name changing alt game....i find it difficult to remain engaged. :{

    and your gender is?
  • andora said on Apr 25, 2009....
    I guess I asked this last ? bc I want to be able to fall into my comfy gender bias....oh it feels so very familiar ;}

bi-coastal, not to be confused with bi-polar

I guess the swine flu is out to insult a few of us global citizens, which would drive home the fact that we are completely inter-dependent and national lines are an illusion!

I head for the hills today....the road was closed with a major mudslide, but thanks to stimulus money the road is getting paved in the other direction and we can still come and go. after the earthquake of '06 our road was closed on both sides and fema helicopters moved emergency supplies and medical patients. that was pretty trippy!

today? well, it is beautiful and I am away from my computer for awhile...my girlfriend and i are going to start a wheatgrass, oatgrass, barleygrass juice regimen for a few weeks --- going to prepare ourselves to help those who get sick while bringing our immune system up to par.....this could get scarey my friend and I hated having to predict all this stuff, I would have chosen another reality, but the masses are lusting for death and destruction because they hate what they created, yet again! that's some powerful juju, so we be ducking in the woods for a few months. thinking about getting my daughter and granddaughter over here too! better to be safe than sorry.  best wishes to you and your loved ones in this frightening times!
