"Hey Mom...Dad...I feel really dragged out...

She couldn't tell us that.

I'd had her at the vet two months ago and they informed me her kidneys were failing, but she could live for some time yet. We put her on a special food.

Cheyenne is our Golden Retriever that never got over the loss of Dakota who passed a year ago September. They both died at 10 1/2 years.

It happened so quickly. Day before yesterday she wouldn't eat her dinner. Yesterday morning she came in and kind of collapsed in the entry. We took her immediately to the vet and they found with x-ray a tumor started in her spleen, went to her heart and she was bleeding internally.

The vet said "they can't say, gee, mom dad, I feel bad, something might be wrong". So they deal with their symptoms as best they can. Her breathing was labored at the vet and that  was the first time it had happened.

Heartbreak dogs - that's what they call so many large breeds.

So Cheyenne went to run with Dakota yesterday morning.

Such a beautiful, loving girl.

Molly, our twenty month old golden notices something is wrong, but is young enough to put this behind her.

We will too, someday.

How they capture your heart - then twist it in the end.

My wife and I decided we wouldn't get another for two or three years -

...that won't work. She will be whining for a golden puppy to cuddle in about two months. She will say its Molly who needs a friend.

I understand, I use excuses like that too.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend, Cheyenne.  They do become members of the family.  You love them just the same.

I am so very sorry for the loss of a beautiful friend and family member Beyond.  Isn't interesting how we always say "No more!" when something leaves us, and in the end we yearn for that very thing, or the closest thing to it that we can get, just to subside us for a little while?  I hope that you guys will be OK and that when you do get around to getting a new puppy its the cutest, most loving, most loyal and adorable creature ever.  ((((((((HUG)))))))
  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 17, 2009....
Thank you CW. And yes, we do.

hege- I've said 'no more' once or twice - never lasts. In our world there's nothing like a golden retriever puppy - and they're even better when they're old.

    oh, beyond, my dear friend.  My heart is breaking for you.  I'm so very sorry for the loss of your beloved companion.  I know that nothing but time will blur the edges of your sorrow, but I'm sending you warm thoughts.   I wish there was more I could say.  {{{hugs}}}

I've only ever had to say goodbye like that to one old golden...Indi...they take a piece of you with them when they go. He got me over my fear of large dogs. At around 100 lbs, he was solid! but a gentle giant, through and through -- my then-boyfriend's parents' dog. The first time I met him, he immediately picked up on my fear and flattened himself on the ground, belly up, holding still as if to say, "See? No worries. You and I are going to be great friends" and so we were, for the next four years...his muzzle was gray, his spirit childlike and yet wise...he used to carry his oblong ball such that part of it stuck out of one side of his mouth like a strange blue cigar.

They can't tell you when something is wrong...but they can tell you a lot of things that you remember long after they pass on.

I'm so sorry for your loss, beyond.

I'm sorry to hear about Cheyenne's passing.  My eyes are a little bit leaky over it all.  I'm glad she has Dakota to go to, but I'm sure she misses you and the rest of the family.  Yes, Molly will need a friend in a bit.  I use excuses too.
  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 17, 2009....
mimi- You said it all, girl, your heart is so big. Thank you. We still have Molly, she helps a lot.

infernal- My work is what drew me to these dogs. They were the 'gentle giants' as you say, the most gentle and beautiful of all. One of the people I met who had two said "if you ever love one golden, you'll love all goldens". I remembered those words and when my wife about twelve years ago said its time to have a dog, I said 'get what you want, so long as its a golden retriever'. She wouldn't have anything else now. She also had a fear of large dogs after being bitten as a young girl by a Shepard. Dakota, our first, took all that fear away from her and gave her that love.
  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 17, 2009....
queenie- Thank you, girl, but my wife wouldn't go for it. We like many other breeds but we're hooked. I'm sure you love yours every bit as much as we love ours.

unique- Thank you so much. Those excuses come easy, don't they?

    i'm so sorry, beyond.
it's so hard to love and then lose.
but of course we cry because we have loved, and who would want to miss that?

i hope those two beauties are enjoying a spring romp in a big ole meadow smack in the middle of heaven....

secret- You're so right - better to have loved and lost...

They had better be romping in the meadow, because they're the first thing I'm going to look for when my time comes. That might be kind of stupid, but I do think about it.

    Thanks girl.

I am so sorry for your loss, beyond. I remember losing my dog Muffie. She was a huge part of my life and the loss was a shock to me ( I was at school when she died). My heart goes out to you.

mrbeyond, i think i have a fairly good idea of how attached you are to your pet dogs.
you and your wife must be devastated at the loss of cheyenne.

by now, you probably have some idea too of my own attachment to my pet dogs.
(remember my post about patsy the prankster's patsy?)
my favorite dog died this january.
i arrived just in time to see her go, and to bury her myself.
i wanted to blog about it as soon as i could, but...

you and i, my friend, with regards to pets:
we do some things in common, other things are done differently.

  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 18, 2009....
    Thank you crybaby.

aurora- Thank you and that is so true.

mrmoon- "patsy was so grateful, she peed on my shoes". When Molly was smaller, she did that twice to me at the vet. And Cheyenne had to be cuddled during thunderstorms. Yes, we do some things differently, but the same love is there. Thanks for coming by moon.

memy- My wife's close friend in New England has a golden named Jesse who is an old dog now. She's getting a puppy soon. I think she wants someone there for her when Jesse goes. That does help. Thank you for stopping by.

I'm sorry to hear this.  When my most beloved Dobie passed, I never even really got attatched to another pet.  The special ones are hard to let go.

I'm sure your Cheyenne is running in the sunshine with Dakota.

  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 18, 2009....
memy- I'll bet Jess would like a pup too.

wombat- You don't ever completely let go as you found with Dobie, but you're missing a lot of love and fun if you don't get another. You would love that new puppy in no time at all. Thanks, I can feel they're together.

Who thought it could be so simple?...
My dog Pokey passed away this morning. I knew it was coming because...
As I sat wrapping some presents for my sister's cats, I couldn't understand why the rats were acting so weird...
Those silly cats ... how little do we understand about them and their ways? Lol. You'd think they were ninjas or something....
Couldn't resist, lmao....
