I'm hoping that those who were school kids or teachers in the USA in the '70s or '80s may be able to answer this question - What is the identity of these books or this editor?
When I was teaching Year 7 & 8 in '95-2K, I found in the shelves sets of "readers" (think that's what US schools called them) by the one editor, which were spectacularly successful at teaching language skills. I know that my mother who had been teaching in the exact same classrooms at that school was the teacher who bought in the class setsback in the '70s or '80s. I'd ask her but she has passed away in the late '90s.
The main feature of the series was that Every Page was decoratively presented - either representational illustrations or art work, or very clever and decorative type-setting. The content included extracts from prose and poetry (both childrens' classical, and modern literature), as well as descriptions of the theory of language (spelling, grammar, punctuation). There were "discussions" between the editor and a little creature (a cricket? a mouse?) about the lessons. If memory isn't failing me, there were at least three separate titles in the series.
Does any of this "ring a bell" with anyone? I would like to be able to track down one or two of these titles to own - I do some remedial lEnglish (read/write) and am sure there's useful stuff in the books.
RSVP and TIA
